Another Lee Bane Classic
larryloyloy10 March 2016
The only way to survive The Valley of the Witch is to have something to latch onto. In my case it is the actor Lee Bane due to the fact he has starred in a large number of terrible films yet still gives every performance everything he has.

The plot is something about witches getting killed many years ago and now a welsh cult from modern day are trying to resurrect them for some unknown reason. Lee Bane is a gritty welsh detective that is trying to solve a mass suicide case which has no importance in the main plot and might as well have been a separate film.

All the actors in this film (apart from Lee Bane) are totally flat and uninteresting, the special effects (if you can call them that) look like they were done in power-point. The score is surprisingly good for such an awful film.

In short DO NOT watch this film unless, like me, you are trying to watch all of Lee Bane's films for some strange reason.

Not good...
nikoslkp11 August 2022
Not only is the plot simple and boring, but the CGI used is also very, very bad. The acting is not bad but it's not good either. I would personally not recommend this movie to anyone, given the fact that I'm still regretting spending my evening with my friends watching this instead of doing something much more interesting and fun.

worst one I have seen
LetsReviewThat2610 May 2022
To start with this movie was all over the place in terms of plot and such. The over the top screaming and lack of scares. As always lee banes performances was the best thing about the movie. Though this time the complaint I have is all the characters in this movie were quiet. Something with the sound design made it hard to hear so I didn't really know what they were saying. Overall just not very good and the payoff at the end was nothing spectacular either.

Diabolical In All The Wrong Ways
librasaturn26 January 2018
Oh my God, this is one of the most awful films I have ever seen . . . I am now convinced if the Actor (I use that term loosely) Lee Bane is in a film, then it is time to hit the off switch. Already seen this below average performer in The Haunting Of Borley Rectory and The Exorcism Of Anna Ecklund (both terrible films) and now this car wreck of a production. What can one say terrible acting, embarrassing script, awful (supposedly based on fact) storylline and then there is the Direction, I have seen better directed pop videos than this and they usually have better continuity. The film jumps from one scene to another with no continuation, boring conversations are imposed upon by random badly filmed Witchcraft Rites (some taken from or based on the old B&W film Haxan), actors look at one another blankly as if waiting for the next piece of script to be written. The Director seems to think he has some unique methods of filming but they come over as silly or over dramatic which is the same thing considering there is not one moment of genuine drama in the film. Do not be fooled by cover artwork on the DVD which is far more impressive than the film itself, this is not Horror . . . just plain horrible! As to the end, well I would call it an anti-climax but it matches the rest of the film perfectly . . . boring, making no sense and drawn out cinematic nonsense that will cure the most severe case of insomnia!

Had so much potential

The movie is not as awful as some of the movies I've seen. That said, this would use a lot of work to be a good b-movie. Some of the fill shots are actually really nice- if it were a music video based in the Welsh countryside, those shots would work.

The acting is not the worst I've seen at all, but I feel a lot of the issue is the direction and the script. A lot of the time, I was found wondering what on earth was even going on, and questioning why the characters were even saying or doing what they were doing.

Overuse of slow motion, and the super-long running scene near the end, followed by the longest cut to black I've seen was almost funny. Everytime something unfortunate happened, or a sound effect was used in an over-the-top manner, me and my partner would have a shot. We were rather tipsy by the end, it has to be said!

I think if it had a different writer, or at least someone to ask the writer why parts of the dialogue were included, as well as perhaps a more consistent lighting tech, it wouldn't look so bad.

Oh and the person who wrote the score... Well, it was... Interesting. Most of the time completely unnecessary and very, very cringe worthy.

Undying evil
TheLittleSongbird29 September 2018
Was drawn into seeing 'Valley of the Witch', with a cool poster/cover, a somewhat intriguing if very derivative premise and as someone with a general appreciation for the genre it fits under. That it was low-budget, which from frequent personal experience is rarely a good sign due to that there are so many poor ones out there (though there are decent to good ones as well), made me though apprehensive.

It is sadly however yet another film seen recently, hence some reiteration because the exact same strengths and flaws present in those films are here, that to me was incredibly disappointing considering its potential which it doesn't do anywhere near enough with. 'Valley of the Witch' is really quite abominable, with so many huge flaws and doesn't do anything with any potential it had. There is net to nothing good here in 'Along Came the Devil', just amateur hour all round. The least thing about it is Bruce Davison.

Going on to the negatives, the story does feel over-stretched and some of it comes over as vague and under-explained in the last third where the film especially became duller, more predictable, more senseless and less unsettled and never gaining momentum. All the characters are too sketchy and with cardboard thin and colourless personalities and with nowhere near enough to make one want to endear to them. Their annoying and illogical decision making and behaviours frustrates. The chemistry is bland and unfocused.

The sound quality is obvious and utilised cheaply (being too loud in the build ups and people's reactions), the effects are shoddy and nearly all of the acting is lacking severely on the whole, that's actually an understatement as the worst of it is horrendous. There is no sense of horror or engagement with the awful predicament they're in, and no connecting with the character, it just reeks of indifference and complete blankness which makes the viewer not care less too.

Dialogue can be stilted and rambling while the pace and film drags on forever, apparent from the very start, never recovering that interest is lost fast. The ending has no build-up and just ends ridiculously. Found too many of the supposedly shocking moments not surprising or scary and the atmosphere dreary, due to the excessive obviousness, a lot of dumb and vague moments and explanations and the lack of tension and suspense. Thrills are none, thanks to stodginess and excessive over-familiarity, and found myself never invested in the drama, which tended to be indifferently acted, interminably paced and statically directed.

A lot of 'Valley of the Witch' has really dull and going nowhere plot elements and often nonsensical and confusing character motivations, while too many of the things to make you shocked are far from creative or unsettling. It all feels rather tame while the threat completely lacks menace and looks terrible.

Nothing freaky or interesting, no development and too derivative, while everything is unimaginative and are more odd than scary, completely failing to show any sense of dread. There is nothing interesting or illuminating with what the film was trying to do and the drama is overwrought with no momentum and a lot of weirdness. The direction is barely there and disorganised and the music is ill-fitting. 'Valley of the Witch' is very amateurish visually, too drearily lit and shows no care in the way it's shot. The editing has more continuity errors than one can count.

Summarising, terrible. 1/10 Bethany Cox

Doesn't merit such a high rating

Yet another Andrew Jones rubbish rip-off with yet another 'Top Cast' of unknowns. I don't know if you need a licence to make featureless films or not but if you do, Jones should lose his, and quick! He's the writer, director, probably make-up man, costumier, hairdresser and Chief Sweeper-Upper but he cannot make a decent film. Lee Bane, Jones favourite leading man or more likely the only person who works for nothing. Avoid this like the proverbial Plague and anything Jones has any involvment in.

Spoilers follow ...
parry_na7 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Featuring some of the cast and crew of Andrew Jones' earlier 'Theatre of Death/Midnight Horror Show' from the same year, this low-budget horror doesn't quite embrace the unnerving intimacy of his earlier film. This is a tale of Londoner Kristen Matthews (Rachel Howells) moving into an inherited house in Wales, where she meets with a small coven of white witches.

Impressive Jones regulars Lee Bane and Jared Morgan star as Detective Jim Eckhart and Father Bill Jennings respectively. All the cast deliver reasonably believable performances, and yet sound issues common with low-budget ventures often render Bane's dialogue in particular sometimes hard to catch. Ross Owen Williams also makes a good impression as Richard.

A local spate of suicides (which turn out to be fairly superfluous to the story) in the Welsh village find themselves puncturing Matthews' dreams in such a way she believes she may have some connection with them.

The storyline is pretty thin (and doesn't stand up well under close scrutiny), but the pace rarely slackens. That's not to say this is edge-of-the-seat stuff by any means, but that isn't its mission. It is a solid, atmospheric slice of rural folk-horror. By opening up the locations, as opposed to keeping things tight as in 'Theatre of Death', some of the weirdness that made the earlier film so attractive is missing, and open air locations lessen the control Jones has over them compared to more claustrophobic surroundings, and whereas 'Theatre…' created its own world by odd, close-cut angles and sickly lighting, this is more prey to real weather conditions. I compare this to the earlier film so much because so far - along with the gently impressive 'The Last House on Cemetery Lane (2915)' - these two projects are all I have seen from the ever growing stable of Andrew Jones' films. His North Bank Entertainment company produces a regular horror output and despite the results here being good rather than great, there is a definite love and feel for the kind of horror I enjoy: understated, low budget, sincerely played and quietly unnerving.
