Outstanding Pilot
kols20 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Was a little skeptical going in on a quiet Friday night, settling in just to see what it was like after a fruitless search on my service's guide.

Put it on series record before the first commercial.

Tom Mison's Ichabod Crane had me from his first scene, coming during a superbly filmed Revolutionary War battle scene. Despite his slightly upper class British accent which would have been unintelligible in 1776.

Historically incorrect but so what. That's what's the suspension of disbelief is all about and there's a lot of that suspension required here; like Crane's virtually instant acceptance that he really has been asleep for 250 years.

Could have been a flaw but, in this case, just keeps the story moving along - and it does has a lot of distance to cover. Which the script does skillfully.

There are lot of little bits and pieces that carry the plot forward, all little gems in themselves, until the really heavy guns come in: the why's and how's of what's going on, driving towards a crescendo that climaxes with a shootout brought only to a halt by dawn, whose light the Horseman cannot abide. All nearly flawless.

Complementing Mison's Crane is Nicole Beharie's Abby Mills, whose character and performance equals Mison's. They're both a pleasure to watch. The rest of the cast is up to the same standard.

Writing is intelligent and occasionally witty. Pacing, framing, cutting and all of the other technical elements are top notch.

So, great characters set in a story well-told and well-shot equals a series worthy of a shot, whether your cup of tea or not.

A Strong Pilot Masterfully Blending it's Visuals, Action, and Mystery
dmurilloroman16 September 2013
I have been waiting for this show for months now and I got exactly what I was expecting, a visually stunning show that not only relies on it's scenery but it's story as well which looks like it'll be able to be stretched out to a lot of episodes with the potential of not being generic. It starts off with a high octane energy and action sequence that leave you in "aww." The Sleepy Hollow story is taken to a modern setting which actually wouldn't have been as strong as if it was in an environment in the past, personally I see more episodes and interesting characters if the setting wasn't messed with. The duo between Nicole Beharie (Abbie Mills) and Tom Mison (Ichabod Crane) is obviously not fully formed but it seems that it'll be able to play out right because of each character's internal conflicts that aren't at all cliché which is a rarity in t.v. These days. The tone of the episode was completely serious and just a touch of comedy could have been able to progress an already enjoyable ride. Overall, I will stay tuned to future episodes mostly due to the fact of visionary director Len Wiseman's directing/involvement and of course how couldn't you be interested in a show created from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek Franchise writers).

Even Better on the Binge
GunnersMate9 October 2018
With the series finales long since broadcast, Sleepy Hollow is ripe for the joy of binge-watching. This pilot episode is light on actual reasonable police procedure (best to accept it now, as it is a constant companion of the series), but the chemistry of the Abbie and Crane mixed with a wonderfully over the top blend of skewed Biblical prophecy, not-quite-history tales, fantasy lore, and quirky supporting characters makes for a fabulous ride.

Pilot packs a musket-load of backstory and lore, but the entertainment value of how Crane so easily (and comically) accepts his new reality and how Abbie so readily accepts the existence of both time-traveling-Crane and the supernatural world lays the foundation for stories centering on some wonderfully dark and oddly charismatic villains. Sleepy Hollow is an indulgent adventure and a terrific modern spin on the Icabod Crane story and cartoon that many grew up on. Take a weekend and enjoy the binge.

Thoroughly Enjoyable
RelentlessMe1025 September 2022
First saw these characters on Bones. I enjoyed that episode. I remember wanting to see more of these two characters. Wish I would have come across this when it was airing on TV. It's got grit and suspense. I enjoy the chemistry between the two main characters. They establish a compassion that feels sincere. I like the supernatural element that the story brings. It is fast paced for the first episode, so I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the episodes keep up with this place. If I had one complaint it would be to get the name of the book in the Bible correct if you are going to use it as a basis of the story. It's Revelation..not Revelations. Other than that, it was very entertaining.

Didn't loose my head over Sleepy Hollow
Fluke_Skywalker29 January 2022
Me in 2013: "Wow, Sleepy Hollow has a fun premise and looks promising. Gonna have to check it out."...

Flash forward to 2022

That's me. Always on the cutting edge of pop culture.

Pilot episodes have a lot of heavy lifting to do, and in the world of modern broadcast TV, where running times are 10 minutes less than they were when was growing up, this means taking a lot of shortcuts. And boy do they here. The whole affair feels rushed and under-cooked. I think it would've benefited immensely from a longer, "2 hour" (see; 90 actual minutes) pilot to help flesh things out a bit and keeping it from feeling like it was on fast forward.

Sleepy Hollow has a lot of very good elements, but, in the pilot at least, the total was a tad less than the sum of its parts. This is likely because its dramatic sinew is extremely contrived. Almost insultingly so. I know you have to suspend disbelief when you watch or read fantasy, but it still has to make sense in the context of the world it's attempting to create, and here it just doesn't.

As much as I enjoyed the look (the sort of perpetual New England autumn we associate w/Halloween) and the cast, this has the feel of a series that started with no end game in mind. Where the contrivances build up, one on top of the other, until it just collapses in on top of itself. In the end, I don't think I'll be returning to Sleepy Hollow.

Now, time to check our that hot new series Glee...

This just went on my weekly calender.
Lathspelll21 September 2013
I am an advocate of reading books rather than watching adaptations, and for this reason when I sat down to watch the Pilot I almost gave up in the beginning considering it to be another run of the mill Sleepy Hollow remake but what I saw was pretty fascinating. They seem to have only used The Horseman and Ichabod Crane and the original conflict that was at the heart of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is rendered just that, a legend with no mention anywhere. There are several elements that will allow for a thrilling plot, if played right. Although it seems like a lot of the elements in contemporary American horror will be incorporated, the good thing is that they never said anything about using the Irving classic to the detail. The underlying mysteries are far too many in number and as is the vogue, you are in for betrayals and cowardice and petty human nature making the drama enjoyable. While there are many biblical associations there is nothing new on the table. The undertones of witchcraft and the eternal fight between good and evil is there. Well, you need something.

Considering Len Wiseman's association with the Underworld franchisee I had some idea of what was in store for me. And he delivered.

The work by Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane is commendable as is Nicole Beharie as Abbie Mills. At present the cast is small but you never know when new players enter the scene.

So while the fall brings with it many new shows those interested in mysteries and drama and have no aversion to a little gore might want to give this small series a try. After all its only 5 episodes. Sit back and enjoy.
