- Quotes
[Daryl compliments Rick for putting the group first]
Daryl Dixon: [about the prison when overrun with Walkers] Glad you were in there.
Rick Grimes: Wasn't much use without my gun.
Daryl Dixon: No, you were. All this time you've been taking off, you earned it. We wouldn't be here without you.
Rick Grimes: It was all of us.
Daryl Dixon: No, it was you first. You gonna help us figure this out?
Rick Grimes: I screwed up too many times. Those calls you got to make, I start down that road... I almost lost my boy... who he was. Whatever else this place needs, I'm here for it.
Daryl Dixon: Like I said, you earned it. But for what it's worth, you see mistakes. I see when the shit hits, you're standing there with a shovel.
- ConnectionsReferenced in Jeopardy!: Episode #37.2 (2020)
This is a very downbeat episode that portrays some harsh realities in a collection of upsetting moments.
Rick's character has been depicted to have gone through some huge changes in between series 3 and 4, and this is portrayed well by his behaviour and attitude. His quieter pacifist lifestyle is put in the spotlight as events take a number of dramatic turns.
The scenes involving the walkers are some of the best of the series so far, but I won't mention details and spoil. If any episode is likely to make someone consider being a vegetarian it's this one!
There is an an ominous level of threat to the well-being of the community that is quite effective. Most scenes are intriguing and make me want to find out what is going on. Particularly as the character of the Governor, in absence, is a conspicuous presence hanging over everything.
I enjoyed seeing the council session and the new method of leadership portrayed since Rick stepped down from the role. This is also quite interesting as it makes you wonder if it will work in the long term or evolve further into some sort of electoral process. Will something happen that reverts control of the community to another dictatorship? Will there be so much tragedy and death that it devastates the community and leaves the entire social constructions in ruins?
All performances are great as always, especially Andrew Lincoln and Melissa McBride.
