Wrestling Monsters
This is another entry in the "Under the Radar" series. I was a kid in the 90's and the "Neo Geo" in the arcades was a big thing. One of the franchises from that system I liked playing was "King of the Monsters 1 and 2". These games were unique because for one thing they were Wrestling games which the system doesn't have much of, the only other one is "3 Count Bout" another under the radar gem and a story for another time. The games I thought was so cool as you got to play as one of the big monsters you would see in the movies that feature giant monsters like "Godzilla" and "Ray Harryhausen" films. This franchise was a sleeper hit but as time went on like most "Neo Geo" games that aren't fighting games it's become forgotten.
This sequel is pretty much the same as it's predecessor, but it takes a slightly different approach and makes an improvement or two. This sequel new approach it's still a wrestling game but goes into more of the fighting game format, which makes sense as the system has been known for its fighting games, so in a way this game was trying to join in; let alone they didn't want to seem too similar.
You have three monsters to pick from each with varied strengths, weaknesses, and abilities, from a "Godzilla" like character, really like the design of him as he looks slightly different as this one is more of a reptilian porcupine, with the number of spikes on his back. The other a returning character the giant humanoid alien who is obviously inspired by "Ultraman". But the third a new character and my favorite who is sort of like "Mecha Godzilla" though here you would probably call him "Mecha Kong" as he is designed like a gorilla.
I like that your character has some other moves other than just wrestling moves which distinguish and make the monsters a little more diverse. I won't reveal too many of them as the kinds you have to discover for yourself. Like with "Mecha Kong" instead of a punch he extends his head making it an extended head butt. When your able to put your opponent into a bear hug you then shoot out missiles from behind his back. As for the porcupine "Godzilla" character you can throw your opponents in mid air just to land on your spiky back, and a jump attack where you make yourself a flying spiky wrecking ball.
The format is much like with any fighting game we're you are going a linear path to take on and out one opponent after another. Each of the opponents you fight are always different. Really like the designs of each of them as their all creatively cool and bizarre, I sometimes can't help but wonder where they got the ideas for them. They're the kind of creatures you must see to believe, like one creature that reminds me of Bogun from the TV series "Ultraman: Toward the Future" as it has two head from its snake neck and on the bottom a giant mouth with shark teeth. Another is a giant scorpion mutant creature that has an exposed alien brain.
I like that you can collect certain power up items that will help increase your characters speed, power and even accesses some other moves you couldn't do before. But beware of certain poison pill items that could easily bring you back to square one. There is even a bonus game where both you and an opponent are on top of a mesa and your engaged in a sumo like wrestling match where the goal is to push him off while preventing him from doing the same to you.
There are more unique environments that are all different, so they don't blend all together and causes you to adapt to them and use them to your advantage like using certain environmental pieces and throw them as projectiles toward your opponent.
Only short points of the game for me are I wish there could have slightly bigger roster, where we should have the same number as the first game or even bigger. Probably the reason for the reduction was that this wasn't that long of a game so oh well. Though I feel the real shortcoming and it's the same with the first game is that we don't have a two-player function, where we can tussle it out with another player. This doesn't bother me too much but still it was a lost opportunity for this series.
It would be cool if there was a third "King of the Monsters" game where we can have a huge roster that includes all or some of the monsters from the two previous games while also add in a slew of new monsters. This game would have to be updated may 'be a mix of both 2- and 3-dimensional graphical presentation. And of course, have a two-player mode where you can play against another player, as well as a four player mode where you have a group of friends over for a four way match. As well as some other wrestling modes like "Royal Rumble", "Cage Match", and all those other wrestling matches you see. If SNK ever wants to make a sequel or revive a property, it's a thought to consider.
Overall, it's a good game, I pretty much feel about it the same as the original as it's kind of the same just with an addition or two. If you're into games with giant battling monsters or into vintage wrestling videos games and looking for something different this game is worth a tussle.
