I’ll be honest, I’m a Huge fan of writer/director Addison Heath’s work – from his script for Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla; to his fantastic directorial debut Under a Kaleidoscope (which I reviewed back in 2014 when it screened at that years MonsterFest); to his most recent film, the superb genre-bending Monda Yakuza; I have enjoyed each and ever one of his movies to no end. So how excited am I for with his latest opus, The Viper’s Hex, another film inspired by Far East cinema? Let’s just say a Lot!

Australia’s premier genre film festival, Monster Fest returns for its seventh year this November 23rd to 26th at Melbourne’s Lido Cinemas with a mix of World, Australian & Victorian Premieres! The 2017 chapter of Monster Fest, takes on a very Australian flavour – the first wave announcement includes not one, but Six(!) brand new Australian feature films, most of which will be enjoying their World Premieres at the festival.
Opening the festival is one of 2018’s most anticipated new horror flicks, Christopher Sun’s creature-feature, Boar. Now we’re huge fans of Sun here at Nerdly, especially his films Daddy’s Little Girl (a film that should have got the plaudits the more recent Hounds of Love received) and Charlie’s Farm. Sun is not the only filmmaker returning with a new film at this years Monster Fest, joining him are Daniel Armstrong (Murderdrome) with his film Tarnation; and Nerdly favourites...

A brand-new take on the Japanese Yakuza films of the 1960s, Mondo Yakuza is clearly inspired by the nihilistic work of Seijun Suzuki (Branded to Kill) in particular. The film tells the story of Ichiro Kataki (Shimada), a violent Yakuza gang member travels to Melbourne, Australia after his beloved sister Yuko is brutally murdered by a group of criminals. Hell bent on vengeance he teams up with Cassidy Arizona (Skye Medusa), a lady of the night with a vendetta of her own…

Director-writer Addison Heath is such a fan of classic Japanese gangster movies his next film is entitled Mondo Yakuza.
Due to start shooting in Melbourne in August, the micro-budgeted film will star Australian-born Kenji Shimada as Ichiro Kataki, a violent Yakuza gang member in Japan.
When his younger sister is murdered in Melbourne, he sets out to wreak vengeance on those responsible and teams up with Cassidy Arizona (Skye Korvin), a lady of the night who is on her own vendetta.
Glenn Maynard will play Ryan Beckett, a sadistic, mid-level criminal with a thirst for violent torture, whose days are numbered.
Shimada and Maynard appeared in Heath.s debut feature, Under a Kaleidoscope, which premiered at last year.s Monster Fest, where it was voted best Australian feature.
For the key support roles Addison is holding auditions in Melbourne on July 4. He describes it as .a violent action film which...

Well it’s that time of year again – the one where websites across the globe churn out Top 10 list after top ten list. So why should we be any different?! Yet whilst we may be following the predictable end of year lists, I can guarantee that my list is anything but predictable, featuring films from across the globe: including the Us, Canada, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and even good old Blighty!
This year more than ever there has been film after film that knocked it out of the park for me – which is why my Top 10 list has Two sections: the Top 10 and then the pick of 35(!) more brilliant movies (I would have loved this list to be a Top 45, honestly). So what’s my criteria? Well it has to be a movie I’ve seen this year, one that was released this year, i.e. making its UK debut,...

Addison Heath, writer of the recently released Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla, re-teams with some of the cast from that film – including Kristen Condon, Aston Elliot and a scene-stealing Glenn Maynard (as a crazy TV evangelist) – for his feature film directorial debut Under a Kaleidoscope, a film which is less of a traditional narrative tale and more a look at life through an LSD haze.
The crux of the film deals with Caleb Loomis (Shimada) an agoraphobic twenty-something who spends his days making UFO movies with cardboard props, eating baked beans, smoking weed and downing an unhealthy amount of LSD. One afternoon, after hearing his neighbour Beatrice (Condon) being being abused for the umpteenth time, he strikes up a friendship with her through a hole in the wall…

The theme for this year’s Melbourne Underground Film Festival is “Evolve Or Die,” so thank God that after 15 years, the fest has decided to evolve rather than kick the proverbial bucket.
What does “evolution” look like for Muff? For starters, this year is a much more stripped down festival. It runs Sept. 12 – 19 at a single location — The Backlot Studios.
Muff usually features a healthy retrospective section, but they decided to spin that off into a separate event that will run in a month or two. Instead, Muff 15 is all about new cinema, with an even stronger focus on Down Under cinema.
Opening Night: Start Options Exit was originally conceived by local co-directors Chris Mitchell and Yoav Lester as a web series, but was subsequently edited together as this outrageous comedy about a pair of degenerates stumbling through the seedy underbelly of Melbourne.
Closing Night: Acclaimed Melbourne cult filmmaker Stuart Simpson...

Review by Scott Clark of Cinehouse
Stuart Simpson’s Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla is a strange but welcome kind of cathartic character study. Warren (Glenn Maynard) is an ice cream man, he lives alone with his cat and tunes in daily to his favourite soap opera. However, after an awful accident, Warren’s life begins to spiral out of control: he becomes dangerously obsessed with his favourite soap star, a local drug dealer starts muscling in on his patch, and his sanity begins to disintegrate alarmingly.
First things first, Glenn Maynard deserves an overwhelming amount of praise for his performance, considering the entire film rests on his laurels. Warren is a hop and a skip away from being a dull kind of caricatured loner, however...

Life is hard when you're a socially awkward icecream man and Australian director Stuart Simpson has taken that simple idea and managed to turn it into something surprisingly resonant with his Australian cult hit Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla. We've covered this one in the past but with Monster Pictures taking it to the sales market in Cannes there's a brand new trailer for your perusal below.Awkward ice cream van driver Warren Thompson's only respite from his drab existence comes in the form of gorgeous soapie star Katie George. Besotted with the young actress, Warren can't help but imagine what life would be like with Katie at his side. After suffering another in a long line of savage beatings from local thugs, Warren's fragile psyche cracks under the...
