Better than I expected
SanteeFats12 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Why the teen brat character Lizzie gets top billing is beyond me. I do enjoy this show though. Two very different personality types hook up at the beginning of episode one. It is also refreshing to see the white guy (Kelsey Grammar) as the ethically challenge lawyer (liar)and the black one (Martin Lawrence) as the honest and forth right one. Thelma Hopkins is Martin's momma and he lives at home after his divorce. Momma looks after him along with his obviously gay legal assistant and the really weird Verushka. Verushka thinks she is very good at investigative and undercover work but hey this is a sitcom. The humor is good, the acting is also. So far the plots are funny but who knows how it will go in the future.

A great idea, good actors, but bad writing.
kulturkonsument16 August 2014
After reading the reviews I was pretty much expecting the worst show ever. And, to be honest, it has some deep holes to fill.

The canned laughter is as ad as they get. The photography/filter is poor and sends a less than high quality feeling through the screen. It seems they're on a tight budget and is rushing this out (which they may be) and it creates a dim filter for the audience.

But let's focus on the upsides. Here we have two comedic talents, in which Kelsey Grammar is one of the all time greatest, and a situation that creates a lot of comedic energy. Two lawyers, two different personalities and a good back story.

This is actually a show that would benefit from a FX/Charlie Sheen deal, that if it makes 20 or so episodes, it will continue for another hundred. Because the idea is to good to mishandle the was it has. If the writing doesn't improve, the series will be canceled like the last Kelsey Grammar shows have. He's a great comedic actor and shows his full range in this series, but even perfect timing can't save a flat line.

A great missed opportunity
David_Alexander_L13 August 2014
This could have been Kelsey Grammar little summer show. And indeed - the 5 points I have given this show are all his.

But thus lies the problem. Grammar is such a great actor, he overshadows everyone else. It reminds of of Star Trek:TNG and Patrick Stewart performance; Grammar does the same here. It's basically old-Fraser again, but this time his is a lawyer. I love watching Grammar at work, and it is a great shame that his previous show 'Boss' was cancelled - what a huge mistake.

The other problem with the show is Grammar counter-part, Martin Lawrence. This is a travesty of miscast here. Lawrence is exceedingly poor, his comic timing is so off it is actually quite sad. He is no much for Grammar who steps all over him. Seriously bad casting.

The other actors are mediocre to typical. They do not help the show at all in my eyes, and I can actually see this show would have been much better with a better cast. I say: fire the cast director!

The stories are again quite sloppy and the dialogue really quite dismal. I do not understand how Grammar was convinced to do this project. He is so much better than this.

Disappointed with the show, less disappointed with Grammar, who's always great.

In the pilot you'll get a decent amount of story and 0 laughs.
Amari-Sali12 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Being someone who wasn't born, much less allowed, to watch Martin Lawrence during his heyday of being one of the top comics of the 90s, but watching a good portion of his work, it makes his return to TV something to look forward to. However, like with most comedians who rose to fame in the 80s, and beyond, not getting better with age, I was worried Lawrence, like Robin Williams, would more so be living off his legacy than showing he still has it. To find out if the pilot is a triumphant return or just a check in Lawrence and Kelsey Grammar's pocket, read below.

Characters & Story

When we first meet Marcus (Martin Lawrence) he has just gotten divorced and due to him being a nice guy, and him feeling like the divorce is his fault, he is ready to be more than accommodating to his soon to be ex- wife, who is never seen. This is something no one close to Marcus seems to support. Not his flamboyant assistant/ paralegal Michael (Rory O'Malley), his mother Ruth (Telma Hopkins), or even the judge ruling over his divorce.

Enter Allen Braddock (Kelsey Grammar) a successful, but now ostracized from his father's firm, lawyer who overhears Marcus' case and with him wanting to get out of doing pro-bono work and rebuild his reputation, he tries to win Marcus over by taking over his divorce. Something which leads to Marcus' discovery of his wife's infidelity and Allen proposing for the two of them to be partners. An idea Marcus isn't highly for since Allen is a bit of a butt hole, but seeing how much money Allen can bring in leads to Marcus compromising better judgment.

Praise

Story wise I liked where the episode went. Marcus got established well, as did Allen, and while we didn't see much of Ruth or Marcus' daughter Laura (Daniele Watts), we saw enough to at least get a feel of them. Also, when we meet Allen's step-daughter Lizzie (McKaley Miller) who, again, you are given just enough to not only understand the supporting character, but get a better feel of one of the leads.

Criticism

I must say though, for something which is supposed to be a comedy from two comedy legends, I barely even cracked a smile. Be it because Martin Lawrence has watered down his comedy for so long that even he wonders how he got to this point, or just because I never really found Kelsey Grammar funny and arguably this is more his show than Lawrence's. Either way, while I didn't cringe at the jokes, I didn't feel like laughing with the canned laughter either.

Overall: Skip It

Unless you have nothing to watch when this comes on, and don't have much to do throughout the week, I don't see the point in watching this. If I chuckled a bit throughout then I would just say maybe Lawrence was rusty and maybe I was just getting used to Grammar's style of humor, but with me not laughing once, I see this whole project as nothing more than a paycheck for the stars. One which, based off the pilot solely, I don't think they deserve what likely was a high asking price.

Full of stereotypes and mild vulgarities, but devoid of humor
FlushingCaps6 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the premiere of this series the day after it debuted, Aug. 4, 2014, on FX. It stars Martin Lawrence and Kelsey Grammar as two lawyers who become partners for no apparent reason other than they needed some part of the series to go along with the title.

Allen Braddock (Grammer), has just been fired from his law firm—by his father. He sees Marcus Jackson, (Lawrence) representing himself in finalizing his divorce.

Marcus supports his mother and daughter in their Chicago home. Allen approaches him in the men's room, offering to represent him, saying he can get him a much better settlement.

Although totally turned off by Allen's demeanor and brashness, Marcus agrees and he invites him home to look over his finances. While there, they hear from the daughter about how his ex-wife has moved into the rectory of a church, where she works as an accountant for the parish. They immediately suspect she is shacking up with the priest and proceed to sneak into the rectory and into the priest's bedroom, and find something that appears to prove the two are more than just co-workers. Now I should make clear that, while they spoke of a "rectory" and "priest" they never said the word "Catholic." But the statue outside the rectory was not Abraham Lincoln. And if it was supposed to be some Protestant "priest" there was never a hint that he was already married, so the lawyers would not have had much ammunition to get the ex-wife to readily agree to changing the settlement.

After winning in court, the two men decide to become partners, largely because Allen can provide much money to Marcus's struggling practice.

I picture the creators meeting to discuss their idea for the series: (I'll call the creators A and B)

A – So, should we have our stars be longtime friends and partners in law? B – Naahh. Let's have them meet in the pilot and immediately hate each other. That's set up lots of insult jokes between them. A- And you liked my idea of the black guy being mild mannered, living with a smart-mouthed mother and daughter. B – Exactly. The two of them can bombard him with insults whenever they open their mouths. The audience will love it. A- And Grammar's character will be a pompous, bore who is wealthy but disliked by almost everyone around him. Novel idea. Although I seem to recall a somewhat similar character on an old series about radio show in Seattle. B- Yeah, I sort of remember that. It'd be good if we could get the guy that was in that show, because he was funny. A – So our black guy is divorced, what about the white guy…is he married or divorced? B – Yes. He has an ex-wife somewhere, but has remarried. And we'll give him a manipulative step-daughter, who's also got a smart mouth. A- O.K., so we're going with the stereotypes for both men, their family members, their marital status—who in TV world is happily married to their first spouse these days? Any other stereotypes we can exploit? B – Well I was thinking about having a paralegal working for Marcus who is in every way the stereotype of a gay man. A- Great! Can't have a show today without a gay character. B- In the pilot episode, we'll develop the plot so the unseen, Catholic priest is violating his vows by having an affair with the almost-divorced wife of our star. A- Hey, you can always get laughs by portraying priests in a most negative manner. Now we're rolling.

The second episode, featured a sham of a pretend marriage between our two stars to see if a famous caterer was indeed gypping her customers, I give you some samples of the unrealistic one-liners:

When Allen said they weren't going to get involved in a case, Marcus countered with, "Oh, we'll get involved just because you said 'hence.'"

When the step-daughter walked through saying some stupid line, the gay man responded immediately, to himself, "Someone call Satan and let him know there's a hole in his fence."

When everyone is together the same step-daughter said, about Marcus' mother, to everyone, "Is she O.K.? She seems really old," as though that were a crime. Later, as the young woman was talking to Marcus's mother, the mother retorted, "You are one question away from being buried in the garden."

As Allen told the gay couple they were going to help handle the bad caterer, "I say, 'You're here, you're queer. Let's sue for it!"

The second episode happily added to the stereotypes by stating that all of the gay couples cheated by this caterer were too reluctant to complain. I thought we were trying to move past the stereotype of having all homosexuals be so mild-mannered that they would refuse to assert themselves when the situation called for it. You don't have to be gay to be offended at this depiction.

This show goes for every stereotype in the 21st Century playbook, uses wisecracking, mildly-vulgar dialog in almost every scene, and thinks we are going to laugh just because we remember when the stars were funny in other roles. I didn't laugh at all and would consider it mild torture to be forced to watch any more episodes. A "2" might be too high.

An enjoyable comedy, with something a little different
taylorkingston2 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I actually really liked this show, which is surprising because I don't particularly love the cast. However, the way the cast portray their characters, and the plot, there is a reason why I changed my mind. Sadly, my joy was short-lived, as this show got cancelled, and that sucks.

This show is about a two guys in Chicago. Both lawyers, both middle-aged, but can't stand together. Regardless of this, they have to join forces, and create their own law firm together, to continue what they were born to do.

Best part of the show: Kelsey Grammar.

Overall, I give this TV show an 7 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Great.

Canned Laughter....Really??
isaacimages-196-6630992 August 2018
Chemistry between Grammer and Lawrence not bad. This show plays like so many sitcoms that try really hard. Canned laughter very distracting.

Formulaic, like a good recipe your mum has given you 100 times
alanjohnpeach12 August 2014
Basically, what do you expect, a reinvention of the wheel?

OK - bugbears for the downside. It's multicamera, it's got canned laughter , it's copycat formulaic of the oddcouple/buddy/fish out of water clichés. It's got one absolute dog of a character (the stepdaughter, who is like Lindsay Lohan stamping on Hilary Banks' comedic memory). Typical family scenario and ridiculously convoluted family situation, etc etc.

Watch it anyway. It's Kelsey goddamn grammar doing a sitcom again. He still has it. Secondly this character of his is essentially just a hard ass version of Frasier Crane. Martin Lawrence is absolutely foil in this show apparently centred around him, plot wise, but this is all about Grammar. The two have undoubtedly shown promise in some of their opening exchanges.

If the show is extended, and the budget and production values go up, as well as crass jokes about things like suicide in the week of Robin Williams' death being cut by someone who aims to show they understand the job description over at the 'Quality Control' department this could have legs.

It's better than two and a half men....... and it's not a 5.4 . I've given it an 8 or potential, but it's really a 7. Just fighting the power maaaaan

Canned laughter?
therogerblum18 May 2019
I don't understand why canned laughter is being used. It is very distracting and doesn't let you enjoy the characters dialogue. Turn off the canned laughter because it's ruining this show.

I would rate a lot higher if the canned laughter was removed.

So Bad
gregberne1115 March 2020
This show is so bad that I just watched two episodes on Amazon Prime then felt a need to come here and review it, warning YOU to not bother wasting time by watching it like I did. Obnoxious laugh track, the worst sitcom writing ever full of hack jokes (especially tons of gay and black stereotype jokes). I like Kelsey Grammer and Martin Lawrence but damn this show is garbage!

Sad this only had ONE season
decidestrategy2 May 2021
I love Kelsey Grammer and I "like" Martin Lawrence so when I friend recommended this show to me I had to check it out. Never heard of it before now. It's not the most fantastic writing ever but I chuckled a few time and enjoyed it enough to watch all 10 episodes. I'm sad that it only lasted one season as it is better than so many other shows that seem to linger way too long. Telma Hopkins is a bonus on this show as well.

Not one laugh
tedusher15 August 2014
Sorry. I watched both episodes and I didn't laugh once. It was predicable and the new characters tried far to hard. Sorry, this is a looser. I expect it to be canceled. The new young actors did not really have any style or substance. Kelsey Grammar and Martin Lawrence are not matched really and it was not convincing enough. Everyone tried to hard to get that laugh and in the end nothing materialized. Perhaps if Grammar was more pompous it may help things along. I think the writers will need to go back to the drawing board on this one and create better characters and have some lines that are actually funny. If the writing is improve perhaps the show will survive.

Bad. Enough Said.
Aaron_Coke3 September 2014
I don't normally comment on TV Shows or Films that I see; firstly because I watch so many and who has the time, secondly if I don't have anything nice to say I try not to write it online. But on this occasion I have to advise people to avoid this show. It will be cancelled soon. Its not funny, stereotypically over done, laugh track is annoying and the characters are predictable and one dimensional.

I gravitated to this because I like Kelsey Grammar's versatility as an actor (he keeps you guessing with each role) and Martin Lawrence has a good comedic sense and timing but on both accounts this show misses the mark.

Its bad. Avoid. Enough Said.

What is wrong...
mare-lst-133 August 2015
This show premiered couple of weeks ago here and I watched a rerun of one episode. Barely actually. Let me start from here. Most of modern day comedy show don't seem to be funny at all and they all use this similar recipe. I don't know what is it, but they all seem the same to me. And most of them seem to address modern day issues in society. For example, in this show, there was this episode where they addressed black racism. I was outraged. That seems to be harsh, but it's not in the way you think. It's completely OK to show this issue and I agree that it seems to be a big problem in USA. But for god's sake, this is comedy. If you want to show how racism is all wrong, make a documentary. I just wanted to watch a show where I can relax and laugh and enjoy it and have a great time. This just made me mad about the world and stuff. Why 1 star? Well for this reason. This show is completely hypocrite. In one episode, they address racism, but then in the other one, they completely mock Russian culture. That's why it's 1 star. That's why I was outraged. I can't even explain how mad and upset I get when this show is on, even when the commercial of it is on. I don't know if there is any funny aspect of it, I was too occupied with thinking. That's what's wrong with this show. That's what's wrong with most of today's shows. I need to laugh. I want to laugh. How come Friends, Will&Grace, Malcom in the middle, Married with children, Modern family and many similar shows are so damn enjoyable and funny. Simply because they are about comedy and laughter, not about issues. I hope this one doesn't get a 2nd season. It would be a waste of money.

I like the show!!
iammsdaniels19 September 2014
I like honestly like the show. Bothe of the main characters are true to what we normally see of them. They are funny and I get the story line. It's a good clean, mature family type of show. A show I could watch with my church going Nana or my small children and it ends with a moral or a good feeling. Hopefully that's still OK in this country....

I hope that the show doesn't get canceled. I truly like Martin Lawrence and I am beginning to like Kelsey Grammar. I applaud them for working on this project together. Maybe the writers could write in another character or change something to give the show a little more "umph" for lack of a better word. I want the show to stay.

Comfort Food.
amesmonde6 June 2015
Chicago lawyers from vastly different backgrounds develop a partnership after they unexpectedly meet in court.

The concept is better than the first episode delivers, that said its still fun. Partners feels clichéd, punchline driven, the production looks cheap and cheerful yet every cliché is its strength as it channels a typical 80's/90's American sitcom complete with awful canned laughter. But that's what's good about it, it's familiarity gives a nostalgia feel. It's Cheers meets Will & Grace and a poor mans Boston Legal to name a few. Kelsey Grammar is perfect as the lawyer you love to hate and Martin Lawrence gives a good performance as the well liked counterpart.

Partners is like comfort food - no matter how bad, you can't help but enjoy it.

Partners is a delight!
jtungsten161 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I cannot say enough good things about Partners an FX show that aired In the summer of 2014. The show was canceled in Sept 2014 to low ratings as it failed to meet the expectations of a 90 episode model as this network usually does with a successful show.

Partners fired on all cylinders and what I mean by that is the acting, the writing and the directing of this show was top notch, leaving me wanting more. This was a show that was fun and easy to watch with great story arcs. The sets were beautiful too! If you want a great show to watch you can purchase all of the episodes on Amazon video you will not be disappointed.

This is the kind of show we need in 2018
collierslife20 August 2018
Kelsey and Martin are always charming and funny in their own genres, but together they blend the best of their respective styles. This is a very cute update of the "Odd Couple' with Martin taking the more conservative character for a change. It is nice that they joined for a refreshing look at a multi-racial cast, without emphasizing stereotypes. I am sorry that they didn't last for more seasons.
