Chicago PD, now in it's eleventh season, has always been the grittiest of the three Chicago shows, and it was certainly true to form with "Unpacking". Not much in the way of sunshine and rainbows here.
To open the episode: a montage of scenes featuring a pensive-looking Voight (who has Platt in his ear saying that he needs to find a replacement for Adam, that it's been six months - a Chicago Fire-style skip forward) and a sad-looking Upton both flashing back to the events of last season's finale are interspersed with someone jogging, seen only from the waist down.
In a similar way to Chicago Fire, PD made us all wonder whether Ruzek succumbed to his gunshot wound. But, Patrick John Flueger isn't going anywhere for the moment, which will be a relief to most long-term fans of the show, I'm sure. I for one like the character. Indeed, he is the man jogging, and trying to get ready for his physical to try and rejoin the intelligence unit.
Life is not rosy for Upton, who has divorce papers to mail back, and who we know will be written out of the show sometime this year. Ironic this storyline airs in the days after it was revealed that Tracy Spiridakos and Jesse Lee Soffer (her now offscreen husband and soon-to-be ex husband) have been dating. Upton is doing it rough, processing the breakdown of her marriage. It's a bleak storyline, but Spiridakos' acting is very good. Really makes you feel her pain. Say what you will about the focus on her (it upset some people last season) but Tracy Spiridakos is a great actress.
We saw no Torres - he is out of town, they said at the start of the episode. Voight appeared only occasionally. Ruzek just in that opening scene. A few Platt scenes - good, she has been underused for many seasons now.
The way things are shaping up, it looks like this might be one of those seasons with one or two of the ensemble cast missing an episode here and there (or appearing only sparingly) to help the show's financial situation. Not ideal, but better than not having the show at all.
