An utter waste of time
Vindelander16 February 2024
Just finished this series, of which all 4 episodes can be seen on My5. It gets steadily worse with each episode with a paper thin and entirely predictable plot.

None of the cast brings anything memorable to the production and the best that I can say about it is that there are some interesting classic cars in Elliot's museum and his house and grounds are worth seeing.

The script is lamentable and I'm amazed that they were able to get sufficient funding together to screen this. I struggle to think of a series in recent years as flat and unremarkable. My advice would be to watch something like Happy Valley again if you want quality entertainment.

Better than expected.
Sleepin_Dragon24 February 2024
Single mum and cleaner Rachel lands on her feet, when she is offered a job cleaning for a wealthy businessman, the pair soon become close, but Rachel is left wondering if things are too good to be true.

I've read some scathing reviews about this show, and whilst I don't think it's great, I still think it's watchable.

The issue I had, is that I thought the first two episodes were very pedestrian, too slow, and very predictable, it definitely improves from episode three onwards.

You have to wonder where Rachel is at on occasion, would a mum let her son spend so much with a total stranger? It was a little hard to believe.

There was definitely a degree of tension, and episode one had a nice amount of intrigue.

Kara Tointon and Allen Leech are both rather good, and I really liked Sara Powell's performance as the cold and stoic Simone, a very interesting character.

Filmed in Dublin, it looks rather good, makes a change from Eastern Europe.

6/10.

Not as bad as ratings suggest.
Glendo22 February 2024
Having watched some utter dross in 2024 whe it comes to tv drama I went into this with some trepidation as a result of all the recent reviews. This is a little predictable but is easy to watch and does have a storyline. I think some of the reviews are a little harsh considering some dramas I've watched based upon good reviews only to find they are shockingly bad. I'm glad it's only 4 episodes long however the story flows nicely, setting the scene and although most people would scoff at the storyline by saying "well this is too good to be true" I guess that's the whole point.

Overall I would say this is worth a watch if at a loose end.

Great concept
traciehigo16 February 2024
The story line is very predictable and the acting is nothing to write home about, very stiff, no flow, it just needs some ump, if you know what I mean.

Could have been really good with different main actors.

The house and the classic cars are very impressive, would it happen in real life, not sure, it may do, but I would hope they have more fun than these two.

Been loads of these types of series, this is not one of the best, can't see there been a series two, if there is please change the actors, someone with a little bit my ump and character.

Best actor is the little lad, better than the two main actors.

Meh
simbiat17 February 2024
I guess this a show for keeping in the background. You know, when you like to have some noise, while doing something. I actually do that often, when I code, for example: put a TV show or a movie on one side of the screen, and code on the other. When in that kind of mode, this show may look decent, since it has quite good dynamics, but... When you start to think about it seriously it makes little to no sense. The woman has a kid, and we are led to believe, she cares about him, and sacrificing her own food for him even. But then, she has an abusive ex, against whom she does not have a restraining order (and probably did not even try), and then she takes the kid with her to a random "billionaire" that wants her to clean for him without much of an afterthought, that it may be dangerous.

Not only that, but she also completely ignores the requirement to not enter prohibited area on her 2nd day. Or 1st one depending on how you count really. Don't get me wrong, even "The Beauty and The Beast" had this kind of thing in it, and numerous other stories, too, but they always either tempt the character to break the rule or force through some kind of accident. There was no accident here, and I do not think closed doors tempt people that much to risk a job one needs to literally survive.

But I guess, that's what you would expect from a person taking her kid inside guests' rooms in a hotel, she is cleaning at. Taking the kid to the hotel, because there is no one to look after him? That I can understand. Taking him inside the rooms? Definitely a no-no, and in real world would probably result in her getting fired pretty soon.

These seemingly little things break the whole atmosphere that the show is trying to build. Since this is supposed to be a thriller, the damage is outright fatal.

The standard of drama in 2024 starting with a whimper
colinrogers118 February 2024
I cannot, first of all, I cannot believe that some folks are rating this 8/9/10. I can only deduce that this was marketing staff at Channel 5. The plot holes are like a sieve. I've never seen anything as poor as this in years. The lead actress ( Toignton)is like some sort of thug. The most unbelievable domestic cleaner I've ever seen. She doesn't convince at all. Supposedly desperate for a job to keep herself and her son surviving, she arrogantly swans about honestly oblivious to a real economic plight. That's the acting not the situation. It's bad. The boy is a supposed genius who misbehaves constantly but she treats him with sweets after telling him off. So why wonder that he continues to misbehave? As bad as each other they snoop about and disrespect property for fun. The ex boyfriend and the little showdown in her flat was comical. She tells her son off for playing her new employers piano then immediately after doing so, proceeds to join him on the keyboard. It's utter garbage. Save yourself the trouble.

Too Bad To View
cathyannemoore-6619616 February 2024
Like many drama series these days the ending seems more about the production team having run out of time rather than the writer having a credible ending to his or her plot. Why have 3 and a half episodes out of 4 leading up to a rushed damp squib of an ending? How it ends should at least be explored somewhat or perhaps a 2nd series is in the pipeline? If so, do not bother. In the 3 episodes that lead up to the finale there are many plot holes but once one knows the end there are even more. Take the advice from my title and go and watch something more interesting like the proverbial paint drying.

A solid drama.
ple-may27 February 2024
Does it keep you guessing - no.

Is it original - no.

Does it try to be clever and something it's not - no.

Is it the best thing ever - no.

What it is, is decent TV. It's well acted, builds the tension well, and doesn't try to lecture with today's fav virtue signal. It's a solid drama that deserves a watch and at 4 episodes, an easy binge that isn't overly drawn out.

I'm surprised at some of the poor ratings here, and while I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea, it warrants a fair score. The two leads are very good, as are the supporting characters. It's not complicated. Just an easy watch.

Too Silly to watch More Than One Episode
frukuk15 February 2024
(Reviewed after watching the first episode.)

This is so, so, silly. Rachel is desperate for money as she struggles to raise her son, Liam. She's offered a lucrative new cleaning job and is told that certain areas of the house are off limits. So what does she do? Does she respect the prohibition because she is desperate to keep the job? When her son messes around on the piano and she tells him that his misbehaviour could lead to her losing her job, does she then confusingly join him at the piano keyboard?

Just so very, very silly. And it's clear there is something about Rachel and/or her son that attracts her new employer. But this is so silly that I've no desire to stick with it to see his motivation finally revealed.

Waste of two good actors!
josiebee-0870422 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I love Allen Leech in Downton and The Enigma film but he was wasted here. What a terrible ridiculous plot. So many holes.

Who was Simone ? How long had she known what he was up to and still carry on working for him ? How did Elliot make all his money? Why did the ex girlfriend suddenly appear say a couple of sentences then disappear ? Where was the security in a great big house like that? What happened to the cat?

When Rachel said he was not the child of her violent ex partner I was convinced that the boy was from a sperm donor and he was really Elliot's and he tracked him down. What a better story that would have been!

Predictable
antide-423765 March 2024
As usual with this type of drama, this started off OK and went downhill rapidly. It is very predictable and some of it makes no sense at all. It is obvious right from the very start that Elliot is the bad guy and the big reveal at the end is an hilarious anti-climax as many of us guessed what he had done anyhow. The sudden change in his P. A. Simone was absolutely ridiculous as one minute she hated Rachel but the next she cared deeply for her wellbeing.

The acting was OK and it was a shame that Taj Atwal was so underused as Jasmine. Kara Tointon seemed to be scowling throughout though which was a bit off putting. Overall this was flat and the ending was truly funny with the least menacing child in history giving a cold stare into the camera. This made me think there would be a second series but I doubt it.

Wow...this is horrible
mmiceli092424 February 2024
I am a completist by nature. A crappy book, I will finish, etc. So, having been 2 episodes in on this drivel, I decided to just finish it. First off, I switched it off twice because the little boy Liam, was the most annoying kid I have ever seen on television. They really pulled out all the stops for this caricature. Glasses, check...Short in stature...check. Know it all...check.

This made zero sense. You are googling his wealth in episode 3?

She's a cleaner, who never does anything but walk around with a dust cloth. She has this horrible kid. She has an awful accent.

He was on Downton Abby and he is a good actor, but this was a horrible project.

He " casually meets her", and the drama unfolds, from a really stupid premise.

Not a compelling mini series
AZO197029 February 2024
Kara Tointon the lead actress is too self-conscious and her facial expressions tend to be overacting or over emoting to be more precise. She probably needs an acting workshop. The plot is unremarkable and it probably could have been tackled in just one episode. The characters' development for a four-part mini series also is not well executed as we are left not knowing enough about many of them especially the lead actress. This would have been better off if the screenplay took more time and effort for the characters to evolve.

I don't recommend this. One would be better off exploring other Tv series.

Enjoyable and easy to watch
sarahpaul-551651 March 2024
I really enjoyed this. The pace was good, well cast and kept me enthralled. Just what I needed to watch after a hard week at work and home. It was easy to follow and get to grips with. Plus I loved the casting of the main characters, really good, not wooden. I wish there was more of this stuff on telly. It's so hard to find easy to watch stuff these days. Personal preference, yes but a solid one to watch in my view. I did binge watch it with a nice glass of red wine. Well done to all involved. I'd definitely recommend this programme to others. One to watch in my opinion. Grabbed me from the start and I have a low attention span.

Unbelievable

Warning: Spoilers
I hated all the characters (Yes even the little boy) She had ONE Character expression throughout......Frowning with her mouth half open! You could tell she has never cleaned in her life! To be honest the whole thing made me angry. As if you would let some MAN you hardly know form such a close relationship with your child that quickly! Constantly letting them wander off alone together. Yeah right, she shouldn't have left Eastenders. Predictable rubbish
lgreen-2369625 February 2024
So predictable. Hopeless acting. Was hoping for a twist, turn or some surprise. No, just utterly boring.

If you are going to write a thriller where viewers know the character from the start, then you need to make it interesting. Emotionally and psychologically interesting. This is hard to do. Try The Fall, an excellent example.

This is utterly shambolic from start to finish, with no surprises, no twists, no real journey. A poor, poor show.

I stuck with the series because I thought on the face of it, it had potential. You watch the first episode and know where its going. The second, third abd fourth are no shock.

The only good thing is you don't have to concentrate and you can enjoy a whole bottle of wine because it makes no difference if you remember it or not.

Predictably predictable
stevev-3409524 February 2024
My first thought about this was 'Surely they haven't given away the plot in the title?'. After about 30 minutes I realised the answer was 'Yes, they have'.

At this point I decided to turn my brain off to prevent any possible damage but continued watching. Actually, if you watch it in brain off mode it's not that bad, there was even a twist at the very end that I didn't see coming, the sort where you ask yourself afterwards: 'Why didn't I see that coming?'.

Channel 5 give us new dramas on a very small budget which is great but sometimes the quality suffers. It's unambitious, undemanding viewing, you will see worse shows this year, which is a depressing thought.

Far fetched beyond belief!
nrtwrcbkv24 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Thought this might be worth a watch as storyline sounded interesting, but how wrong was I.. To start with the lead character was such a bad actor with no expression at all, I don't think she had touched a duster in her whole life, best on the firm? Especially dragging along to every job her really annoying son with his sticky fingers all over the place. And what was with the dead birds bringing into school, what was all that about. The male lead was just like a robot, how did he acquire all that wealth, even the log cabin. The mysterious wife, how did she get into the house and also at the cabin. It was all so far fetched. How did have so many decent cars and no security in the whole place apart from his secretary. Was she in on it , who knows. It must of cost a fortune to make this series. It makes "Finders Keepers" look good.

Frustrating that stuff like this gets made.
empasam3 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
"Don't go in that room, it's off limits" So she goes in that room. AND tries on the dead/ex wife's clothes. I thought it was a bit "Jane Eyre". But then you have the assistant turning up spookily like Mrs Danvers.

Rachel is a cleaner who barely does any cleaning, or does it half heartedly. Took the job without asking about pay, hours, duties/how does she get there (her boss had to give her a lift the first time she went) etc... Actually, all her snooping would give cleaners a bad name & stop anyone from ever hiring a cleaner.

Don't know whether the kid is supposed to be autistic/brainy/different, he never quite fits any mould other than generic "bit weird". She tells him not to do something then does it herself, no wonder he's confused.

I'm writing this review after one episode. Don't know if I can watch any more.

Update - on to episode 2, the man she's cleaning for invites her to a cocktail party, is this suddenly Pretty Woman? Yes, yes it is. He gives her a necklace & introduces her to business associates!

Update episode 2 : weird kid turns on a tank of something that produces fire/a flame, gets shouted at - and then apologised to!!! No "you shouldn't do this and this is why". So frustrating.

Update after watching it all in one night. It just doesn't make sense, nothing is explained - like how/why did he notice/target her in the first place? How could Simone find out so much about Rachel & her ex - but not about his boss, his family, his ex-wife? What happened to the stepson? What 'business' was he in/how did he make his money?

Interesting ending though.

Really bad
reid-8727221 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Not good. Just not good.

Sooo far fetched. Firstly the hotel job, she would have been sacked for having her son at work with her like that.

Secondly him, she hardly knew the guy but let her son spend all that alone time with him, let her son keep a mobile phone from him, took a TV from him, accepted a car for her son from him and even when she broke up with him was considering letting him pay for private school for her son! She took everything that was offered. Snooped around his house, tried on clothes and made a sandwich!! Jeez! There were just too many WHAAAAT moments. The ending was rushed and I didn't care what happened to her.

Predictable
josut-6581121 February 2024
Sadly, I was hoping for a twist, any sort of twist but completely predictable. What a shame - it could have been good if there had been any other ending. I only gave it 2 stars as I like both stars, they both try so hard with a substandard plot and both almost seem to be hoping for something better. During episode 1 it is clear what's going on and throughout the other episodes the only twist is hoping it isn't what it is predicted to be but it is what you think it's going to be. I actually think the stars are also hoping for more. By the last episode I was playing games on my phone waiting for it to end :-(

No surprises at all.
pwjwpaul14 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This series was just a straightforward soap opera story line that has been done many times before. A drama that might run for weeks in the main show has been condensed to four episodes as they have excluded all the other plots & characters.

This just has just different actors & different locations.

Completely lacked realism, for example the lead was desperate for money & obtained a high paying job with clear rules but had no issues breaking them & risking it all on her first day.

The villains right hand woman did all his dirty work but then found a conscience.. why?

Full of plot holes and really was a waste of 4 hours.

Strangely entertaining . But .......
daveditch-5329116 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This series is a strange one . It's fairly predictable and throughout you feel that the tension and intrigue could and should have been ramped up a few notches to make better use of the lead characters abilities .

The story plodded along as you waited for it build up which never happened but as everyone was introduced the plot still lent itself to wondering where they'd come from and what would happen to them .

Unfortunately the final episode was more like a documentary recording what happened than a dramatic conclusion . One surprise was Simone turning up with a chunky cheque just as you thought the family would be slipping back into poverty but of course it was a sadly cliched surprise.

Too Good To Be True - Has Channel 5 read the trade descriptions act?
eselim917512 March 2024
Only way Allen Leech could get himself cast in this was to produce it because his unconvincimg audition would not have got him the part. Wooden acting on his behalf, worthy of Hugh Grant in his prime. Unbelievable, thin plot with poor dialogue. Kara Tointon is quite a good actress so didnt need to do this rubbish. Production wasnt even much good with some scenery quite clearly hundreds of miles away from London but supposedly within a short distance of it. Can't see any reason to recommend this programme. Only plus is I now realise that if Allen Leech is anything else I will save myself the disappointment of watching it or at least do so with very low expectations.

It could have been better
stevenemberson22 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Having taken our time to unpack the story and the scene, the conclusion was rushed. Credibility of Rachel as a cleaner was stretched when in the first couple of days in a new job she was trying on clothes she found in employers wardrobes.

It had great potential. The house, the cars and Elliott was believable, however her complete lack of any questioning was naive beyond belief.

I really was hopeful that this would be better than it was.

With such a rushed conclusion and some plot areas completely left unexplained it was a little sad. I couldn't believe at the beginning of episode 4 that they were going to wrap it all up that quickly..
