I was 4 years old when I saw this

I don't have anything negative to say about Psalty.

I didn't need therapy but instead I watched these Psalty VHS tapes over and over.

Then years later I rewatched these videos on You Tube and then it was then decided to be baptized.

These movies made praising Jesus fun and I saw God as someone loving and approachable.

This was a precious time in my childhood so whenever I watch Psalty I am reminded of that innocent child that loved God and his son Jesus.

Oh by the way one of reviewers may have been a quite but confused which movie this is.

There was no attic, there was risky rat, who actually a representation of the devil.

However Risky Rat does appear in a earlier movie called Praise 4.

It's only in this movie that he has a actual sense of humor.

Yes I was mildly creeped out by that Rat but he made me laugh.

Whenever I was scared or creeped out as a child it just made me love it more.

I mean who doesn't like a creepy villain?

I think what's creepy and scary may depend on the child and depending on how that parent views as suitable for that child.

All I see is kids having fun.

I for one am one of those kids who grew up in the christian fundamentalist household, and let me tell you, the stuff we got to watch. But by far, the video that has left me the "Psaltiest" with pun totally intended, was Psalty's Salvation Celebration.

The story begins with Psalty, Shelly, and shelley's newly converted friends marching through a jungle, getting captured by cannibals (Very kid friendly at the start) But we wind up going back 2 weeks, where Psalty, and his star performer Shelley and a group of kids he knows are about to take a trip through the U.S. by train to perform shows at various cities. tagging along are Charity Churchmouse, and the evil Risky Rat.

First Problem - It claims to be a movie. A movie is at least 1 hour, 30 minutes long. Maybe they called it a movie because they knew it would be played during sunday school and most sunday school classes don't go longer than an hour, so the prospect of watching a movie that actually ends before the end of sunday school sounds awesome, but it's really not.

Second Problem - Risky Rat. He's the most obvious bad guy in the world yet most of the characters are so dumb they never catch onto him. Also, he's the only character who spends most of his time interacting with the audience, mostly to draw heel heat in case you haven't figured out he's the bad guy.

Third problem - The unrealistic portrayal of faith. Psalty is Christian. Like very Christian. He's so Christian he's Ned Flanders in a blue book suit. How many kids can actually relate to the guy? not many. On top of that, Psalty's attitude is so reflective of that other character, who sings songs, wears a polyester smile...oh yeah, Barney. Psalty is basically a Christian Barney.

There's lots more, but i can't talk about all of it. To sum this one up, this was a bad memory for a lot of us christian kids who had to deal with fundamentalist upbringings. We look back on this and either laugh about how cheesy it was, or how much we felt like we were being brainwashed. Watch it if you like, but expect a lot of cringing.

I hope the Child actors received therapy after screening

Warning: Spoilers
Don't get me wrong I completely understand that when Director Ernie Rettino set out to make a Christian children's television series and song albums he had the best of intentions at heart. However there is a fine line when it comes to children television between friendly characters and creepy guy in a suit talking to small children. Kids Praise 4 is not only extremely outdated (filmed in 1992) but you can clearly see the budget on the screen in every shot or the lack there of. Our main character Psalty the talking Psalm book, looks like a combination of Rob Ross and Ronald McDonald, wearing and anthropomorphic book suit that I assume was extremely uncomfortable for Rettino to wear. The child actors are worse than a 1980s Saturday morning toy commercial, and I feel like they should be running away from Psalty and telling an adult, rather than then joining in his antics.

The story begins when Psalty drives by in his song mobile, and he and the children go to the old church to praise Jesus. They then go to the old attic of the church (I'm not joking), and there they do various scenes of Biblical lessons and song numbers and it's here we see the child actors real "acting" talent. After a few songs we are introduced to Charity Church Mouse, imminently we see she's is female actor with very poor prosthetics to looks like a mouse, but it just comes off as creepy. She tells the kids her goal is to go to California to become a gospel singer, they sing a few more songs that are terribly dubbed (probably because the actors couldn't actually sing due to the prosthetics). After a few more songs we're introduced to the Church mouse choir, which I can only describe as first graders in low budget rat costumes they make Charity their leader which she then declines because of her hopes to still pursue a singing career. Using the Song Mobile she continues to write her own songs and is immediately "interrupted" by one of the choir mice. I know there was supposed to be a time lapse in these scenes but it's almost nonexistent. Next Charity is in a dream sequence with an even creepier anthropomorphic rat offering her dream singing contract and of course it ends up that the rat is a metaphor for greed as she is trapped in a cage at the end of the song. Charity wakes up and realizes she needs to spot perusing her own goals and serve God instead. She then accepts the Church Mouse Choir's invitation to become their leader and serve God the way she was always meant to do. Which confuses the morals because if she wanted to become a gospel singer in the first place wouldn't she be serving God anyways? Overall this movie was terrible the acting was pure cheese, the costumes are something out of a horror movie, the morals are confusing and I feel like the actors should have repressed memories of this whole ordeal. I know there were good intentions in making this film but it just crosses the line of innocent to creepy way to many times. Would I recommend this film? Hell NO!

Wish we had more shows like this today!

Anyone giving a bad review, especially in today's world is unfortunately typical. The first review was writen by someone who represents the watered down Christianity we see today. If you're a ACTUAL Christian, you will love having this treasure available for your children.
