Psychiatrist Dr. Brazer asks psychologist Kate Kovic, who just swung a prominent court case, to help prevent the impending execution of his client who confessed a murder, convincing her she suffered from multiple personality disorder, not faking it. They come to believe she's key in the unsolved murders of the unidentified serial Toyman Killer, revolving around sexual abuse of teens. She drops her initial reluctance to cooperate with police detective Ray Santana after Brazer is brutally slaughtered. Together they dig into a sordid web of deceit, abuse and self-protective delusions, falling in love and facing the murderer.
