Peril on the Night Train
Prismark103 April 2024
It might be modern, updated and with a diverse cast. This really evokes the spirit of The Famous Five books. As a kid, I did read the books.

Set in 1939, just before the outbreak of war. Uncle Quentin has invented some kind of computing machine.

The children are bored with their new tutor Mr Roland. He is a bit dull and George gets mouthy with him. She does not trust him especially as someone makes an attempt to steal Uncle Quentin's machine.

The children discover a secret tunnel, a nearby guest house with sinister guests that includes Mr Roland. They set a trap for him that includes a bit of tar and feathering.

Only the British secret service has been keeping an eye on Uncle Quentin as well. That computing machine is of British government interest.

Before long everyone is on their way to a military base with the machine on a sleeper train. Only there seems to be enemy agents everywhere. All of them want to gets their hands on the machine. It is a case of trust no one.

The story takes off on the train. It reminded me of movies like The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes. Both novels adapted for the screen by Alfred Hitchcock.

I did chuckle at all the false accusations being showered around, mainly without any evidence. The kids also seem to blurt out their plans to strangers. The Famous Five do not know the meaning of discretion.
