We all know Wes Anderson has his repertoire of actors: Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson, and on and on and on. And over the course of his career, they have all grown accustomed to – and perfectly fit – his signature style. But that’s really hard to do early on, when none of this has been established and you’re just trying to get that first film completed. Now imagine doing it while a sometimes short-tempered Oscar nominee watches it all unfold.
Wes Anderson recalled that when making his first movie, James Caan didn’t understand just what this rinky-dink, $5 million production was even going for. “I remember James Caan came to the set of Bottle Rocket, and he was really saying, ‘What are you guys doing?’ We were doing things that he thought, ‘This is not how movies are made,’ but he sort of adapted to us.”

Cinematic auteur, icon of pastel aesthetic, and pen salesman Wes Anderson enjoys a varied repertoire. He’s made commercials, worked in live-action film and animation, long-form and short, and has been known to don multiple hats on each set. While most of his work is original, he has also adapted the work of author Roald Dahl with “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and, most recently, his Oscar-winning “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.” Taking part in a conversation at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France, reported on by The Hollywood Reporter, Anderson said he’s now ready to take on another huge British novelist.
“I feel like the writer who I would like to adapt — who I don’t know if I can see the opportunity — is Dickens,” he said. “I would like to do a big Dickens story. They’ve all been adapted. They’ve all been done many times.

Wes Anderson wants to adapt a Charles Dickens story for the big screen. The acclaimed director has previously helmed a stop-motion take on Roald Dahl's 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' and has revealed that he would love to tackle the work of the celebrated Victorian novelist.Speaking at the Annecy Animation Festival on Wednesday (12.06.24), Wes said: "I feel like the writer who I would like to adapt – who I don't know if I can see the opportunity – is Dickens."I would like to do a big Dickens story. They've all been adapted. They've all been done many times. They're so interesting. People keep going back to them. They're so entertaining and so complex."Anderson has been working on his latest film 'The Phoenician Scheme' in Germany and says he was joined by frequent collaborators on the set of the movie – which he puts down to his unique methodology on set.

Wes Anderson has reportedly put together another impressive ensemble of actors for his next feature-length film. Entitled The Phoenician Scheme, it’s described as father-daughter espionage tale with a darker tone than some of Anderson’s previous works.
As previously reported Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Bill Murray, and Mia Threapleton will have starring roles in the film. Now, per the German industry website Crew-United, other cast members include Charlotte Gainsbourg, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Tom Hanks, Riz Ahmed, Bryan Cranston, Rupert Friend, and Antonia Desplat.
The Phoenician Scheme recently wrapped filming in Germany and is presumably targeting a 2025 release. It’ll mark Anderson’s follow-up to 2023’s Asteroid City.
Earlier this year, Anderson won his first-ever Academy Award for the Roald Dahl short film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

Reports that Wes Anderson was aiming for a scaled-back cast for espionage thriller The Phoenician Scheme may well have been off the mark.
When reports first surfaced that Wes Anderson’s next film would be an espionage thriller, minds were left agog pondering what he was actually up to. After all, Anderson used the iconography of 1950s sci-fi films to unveil something far more intricate with 2023’s Asteroid City, so who knows what Anderson’s good old spy movie could secretly be a Trojan horse for?
One early report we did hear suggested that for this film, Wes Anderson would be scaling back his cast and not working in the same ensemble-driven way that he so often does. That report now looks like it could have been wide of the mark (or perhaps things simply evolved) as the full cast list for the film has now been released and well,...

Before Wes Anderson skipped this year’s Oscars to film “The Phoenician Scheme” in Germany, fans already knew which actors would be at the heart of the director’s latest ensemble. Benecio del Toro and Mia Threapleton star as a father and daughter whose family business leads them into a dark espionage tale, with Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, and Anderson regular Bill Murray also starring.

Newly minted Oscar winner Wes Anderson has now wrapped production on his next feature, The Phoenician Scheme, in Germany. We’ve known the story of a family and a family business, specifically capturing a father-daughter relationship in a dark espionage tale, has a cast that features Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Bill Murray, Mia Threapleton, and Riz Ahmed. Now the full ensemble has been unveiled, featuring many familiar faces from the director’s cinematic universe.
Anderson’s recent Asteroid City collaborators Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend, and Bryan Cranston have joined, according to a German crew posting, as has his Henry Sugar star Benedict Cumberbatch. Charlotte Gainsbourg, a newcomer to the world of Wes Anderson, will be playing “first wife” in the film, presumably in relation to Benicio del Toro’s character. Exclusive: Michael Cera caught Tyler Taormina’s feature directing debut Ham on Rye after a friend suggested he check it out. He was so impressed that he signed himself up as a sort of producing “cheerleader” on the filmmaker’s latest picture Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point, which plays in Directors’ Fortnight on Friday,May 17, at the Cannes Film Festival.
Cera’s quick to point out that Krista Minto, co-writer Eric Berger and others did the heavy-lifting producer duties on the picture that’s almost like a fly-on-the-wall exploration of a sprawling Long Island family’s holiday get-together.
“They’re the ones who actually made the movies,” he stressed.
The film’s Cannes screening comes at a time when Cera, who has made short films, has two films in development, both of which he will direct. One of them is called Gummy, the other is untitled. The untitled one is likely to go first,...

“We stand at the summit of Mont Blanc, the White Mountain. Highest peak of the Alpine arch and inspiration for the first Montblanc fountain pen, designed over 100 years ago for the adventurous traveler who wants to leave his mark.”
Say what you want of Wes Anderson’s oeuvre, but his gift for ad copy speaks for itself. While Wes Anderson continues production in Germany on his new film The Phoenician Scheme, starring Benicio Del Toro, Michael Cera, Bill Murray, Riz Ahmed, and Mia Threapleton (Kate Winslet’s daughter), we have another treat from the filmmaker today. After teaming with cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel on his latest feature, he’s now collaborated with Linus Sandgren for a new short film / ad for a company that certainly fits his brand.
To mark a century since the pen Meisterstück was first introduced in 1924, Montblanc has partnered with Anderson to create a campaign that journeys into the Maison’s extraordinary world as seen through the filmmaker’s eyes. Since his first film, Writer/Director Wes Anderson has become known for his highly visual combination of bright colors with an older aesthetic. His costuming and set design have a very specific signature that makes it easy to identify when watching a Wes Anderson movie. Wes Anderson provoked chatter at this year's Oscar ceremony by not being there to accept his award for Best Live Action Short Film for The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar. But he had a good excuse — he was kicking off work on his next film. While some the cast included the predictable likes of regulars such as Bill Murray and Benicio Del Toro, we now also know that Riz Ahmed is among their number.
Anderson's latest is still largely under wraps, with no official word on a plot yet. But the director has cameras cranking away in Berlin, working from a script he wrote with Roman Coppola. Production was supposed to kick off last year, until the dual strikes put paid to that plan. And while it has yet to be confirmed, the title for the new project is rumoured as The Phoenician Scheme. Outside of perhaps Steven Spielberg and Janusz Kamiński, there may be no director-cinematographer collaboration that’s more extensive in modern-day cinema than that of Wes Anderson and Robert Yeoman. Nominated for seven Academy Awards, filmmaker Wes Anderson won his first Oscar this past weekend, the Best Live Action Short Film for his 33-minute short, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch. But during the Oscar ceremony, Anderson was nowhere to be found and couldn’t accept in person.

Wes Anderson Shares What His Oscar Acceptance Speech Would Have Been, And Why He Couldn't Deliver It
During this year's Academy Awards, at least one longstanding wrong was finally righted. Even as someone who's generally found Wes Anderson's work to be somewhat hit or miss, it's always felt like a serious oversight that the acclaimed filmmaker had yet to win a single Oscar. You're telling me the guy behind "The Royal Tenenbaums," "Moonrise Kingdom," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," and "The French Dispatch" could only muster a grand total of seven nominations over the course of 20+ years? Poppycock, I say!
Well, that ignominious streak finally ended this past Sunday. But while Anderson's long-overdue win came in the live-action short film category for "The Wonderful Life of Henry Sugar," he wasn't even in attendance to accept his award. Some viewers may have interpreted his absence as an intentional thumbing of the nose towards a voting body that hasn't exactly shown him much love over the decades, but...

With eleven feature films under Wes Anderson’s belt, we can now quickly add another. While the director’s recent batch of Roald Dahl adaptations were released as short films––so the first could compete for the Oscars––now that Anderson has indeed taken home his first Academy Award, he’s realizing his complete vision for the project.
Just after he nabbed his Oscar, Netflix announced they will release Wes Anderson’s anthology feature The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, combining all four shorts and adding a new original song by Jarvis Cocker, this Friday on the platform.
