2017 was Kim Jong-un's year. By increasing his provocation, the North Korean leader has taken his country to the centre of the world stage. The latest intercontinental ballistic missile launches by Pyongyang have shown that North Korea is now able to strike North America. And despite Donald Trump's threats, despite international protests, Kim Jong-un is determined to continue his nuclear programme at all costs. How did things reach this stage? How did such a small and isolated state become a nuclear power under the very noses of the international community? To understand this, we need to go back to the founding of the regime by Kim Il-sung just after World War II.
