By itself, Yoshi's New Island is a fun game. Yoshi, along with Kirby, is one of the more dynamic platform characters. There's tons to do with varied level design and villains. Its a quick and easy enough for a casual gamer, but collecting all the items and getting 100% is challenging enough for the hardcore gamer.
However, it is when its compared to the original that it is flawed. With the exception of the visual change and the metal egg ability, there is almost absolutely nothing different from the original. They recycle everything, they even add only one new villain type, and its only used in one level. It is also not as challenging as the original. (On the plus, side the extra stuff is trickier.) Its just disappointing they didn't take any risks.
I liked the 3D-ish crayon graphics, but the look from the original is still superior. The music is sub-par.
Basically, its a fun game to play, but if you'd play the original or even Yoshi's Island DS, do not expect to be wowed.
