Frustrated at the lack of behind-the-scenes featurettes and publications on the making of the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes franchise, director Dan Fowler finally decided to produce the ultimate Killer Tomatoes documentary himself for fans everywhere, using his animated horror host web show, Screaming Soup!, to present it.
While Steve Peace recalls it being the overwhelming popularity of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers that persuaded Fox Kids Network to not pick up the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes cartoon series for a third season, it was actually X-Men: The Animated Series. In the books "Previously on X-Men: The Making of the Animated Series" and "X-Men: The Art and Making of the Animated Series" by Eric and Julia Lewald, it's mentioned Fox executives thought Killer Tomatoes was silly and fun, but division president Margaret Loesch wanted an edgier cartoon to help Fox Kids Network break away from the herd and stand out among the giants ABC, CBS, and NBC. With a long time passion to see the X-Men brought to television, she begins production on X-Men: The Animated Series in February 1992 after Attack of the Killer Tomatoes wraps its second and final season at the end of 1991.
Screaming Soup! Presents Attack of the Killer Tomatoes Retrospective is the winner of the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award for Best Documentary 2023.
