Well-Intentioned. Important Issue. Flawed Presentation.
Stovepipe9924 May 2020
I think that it's important to be able to separate the intention of the filmmakers and the importance of the issue from how effective the film actually is.

This movie follows a white, middle-class girl who is sold(?!) to a pimp by a group of her (white, upper-class) classmates. She endures 8 days of captivity as her family works to rescue her.

I think that child sex trafficking is a very important issue and one that should have a higher profile in our country. But the version presented in this film, while not impossible, is certainly an anomaly. Kidnapping a clean-cut middle class white teenage girl (who has zero substance abuse issues and very minimal teenager conflict with her family) is simply not a good strategy for a sex trafficker. We aren't talking about something like the Elizabeth Smart case where the victim is locked away in a cellar or something by a single kidnapper. These people are staying in a hotel. She is seeing (according to the voice over) almost 7 different men each day. Her photo and name are plastered all over the news and on fliers around town.

A much better representation of child sex trafficking come from the other girls. Sugar, who is sold by her mother and BB, a runaway who falls in with the wrong crowd. These girls truly have no one on their side. No one is looking for them. Their names and faces never made it to the local news, much less a missing poster. They represent the kind of sex trafficking that has happened in my community.

I was also frustrated at times by the portrayal of the process of finding her. This film continues the misconception that you have to wait 2 full days to report someone missing. You do not!! In another scene the mother of the missing girl nods along when a family friend says "All we can do is pray." Um, what?! How about canvasing? Talking to the other kids at the party? Posting to any and every social media platform? Fundraising a reward for information? We are later vaguely told that the HSI uses an "online search" to look for Amber. The portrayal of finding a missing person is muddled and confusing.

Again: this is a really important issue. By chance I recently watched the film Holly which also addressed child sex trafficking (albeit on an international level). This is something that needs to be brought to the forefront. But I felt the specific story told in this film came off as implausible and confused. I appreciate the intentions of the filmmakers but implying that never letting your 16 year old daughter go to a party is the solution feels misguided.

Very important issue in a very subpar film
MadSpaghetti25 October 2020
Sex trafficking is an extremely important issue that deserves to be brought to the forefront of societal focus and concern. This film deserves credit for trying to do that. However, the acting and dialog was pretty bad which takes away from the importance of the issue.

In order to get people out of their comfort zone and discuss things that make them uneasy you need to get the issue to the table in the first place. When the reviews, like this one, mention how bad the actual film is then we are diverting our attention off the topic and on to the film itself.

However, it is better to have a bad movie about the perils of sex trafficking than to have no movie about sex trafficking. At least we are all here talking about it and that's a start.

Bad writing, acting and directing make this a do not watch for me
myamazon-erik30 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is extremely low budget - the writing and acting do not deserve the high rating this has. It is so bad it distracts you from the serious and Real topic of human trafficking. In one scene the police FINALLY decide to act and go after this girl. They roll out in a DHS armored personnel vehicle. I think they used more agents to find this one girl than it took to take out Bin Laden. From what I understand this was derived from real events, however the terrible acting made it difficult to care for any of the characters. It felt like most of the scenes were done with the actors reading their lines from cue cards. I don't usually write reviews for movies, but had this been done better it actually might have been a very useful information tool to show young people.

Terrible acting and writing
businessnerves29 January 2021
Considering the severity of the topic it's disappointing how bad the acting in writing was. It seems like some kids got together and tried to make a movie for film class. They could've made this movie much more impactful.

Haven't seen something so bad in a long time
lauracleav6 December 2020
I can not remember the last time I saw something so horribly acted. How anyone making, producing, directing or editing could possibly have let any part of this movie pass as releasable is beyond me.

Poorly Done

Perhaps a documentary would have been a better approach than this amateurish melodrama. The subject certainly deserves greater awareness.

AWFUL
khloedeaton29 November 2020
It sucked. It was like one of those cheap .10 cent movies that you could buy in a dark ally. It was like inexperience high school kids made this. You could guess the ending, and you could tell the tears where fake. There was no emotion at all! The way the girl was acting had no common sense to it! Like she couldn't walk half the time and cried the other half FOR NO REASON!

Terrible!
klofgren-5618815 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie really drives home the point that if you're white and have money, you really don't have to worry because the system will rescue you. Poor acting. The main girl is a terrible actress and I barely made it through the movie bc of how ridiculous she was. Don't worry though, mommy and daddy use their wealth and political connections to swoop in and save the day. What about all the children who are trafficked who don't have a choice? The ones who's family doesn't have the means to call in homeland security? Precious little Amber spent 8 days being trafficked. The other women were slaves since they were children. Hard to feel sorry for the poor little rich girl. This movie would have been much better if they focused on the plight of those taken as small children and forced into sexual slavery. This is a serious issue and I feel like this movie really trivialized those facts in favor of a white heroine. Would not advise to anyone.

Horrible acting
tonguesofpraise31 March 2021
Was hard to get past the constant crying and extended scenes where everyone is quiet and nothing is being said for moments. Acting was not good at all. The film had a lot of great potential but I think it would have worked out better with a stronger message if made into a documentary.

As Horrible This Subject Matter is it is happening.
pthompson-7082412 August 2019
I don't understand why some have given low ratings. This subject is being hushed up by the media. Just because you do not see this in the day light does not mean its not happening. This movie brings the subject into the day light. Wish the media had some ethics and would do some investigative reports on this subject.

Worst movie I think I've ever seen
ndpjsrqr4 January 2022
I wish I could erase this horrible acting from my memory. It's an important message but this would've been better off never having been made- it's so bad, it's almost making a joke of the real issue. I can't even believe this is real. How did this get a $2.5m budget??

The story is important but woeful acting!
tocanepauli21 April 2022
For such an important subject this film was terrible ! Where was the emotion? The fear? The lead actress was nothing short of abysmal and it was hard to even feel pity for her! This film should have been portraying an important message but failed miserably. Sorry.

Strongly victimizing piece promoting the director's limited and false perceptions of gender and race through religion. Worrisome at best.
lucasmaaser10 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I have had the doubtful opportunity to watch Mr. Booyens piece revolving around the issue of Human Trafficking in minors in the US-American context as part of a conference in late 2015. He joined the screening himself, promoting his troubling view on religion, gender and race. The movie itself features an overly emotionalized, one-dimensional and victimizing perspective on survivors of Human Trafficking, characterizing trafficked sex workers as mentally unstable drug addicts under the reign of non-white caretakers that fulfill every racial stereotype one could imagine. On the other side of his victim-perpetrator-dichotomy, there are troubled parents and community members finding their strength in overly promoted prayer and their faith in god, which paints a pretentious picture of religious trouble-solving at best. His vision of society, which I would like to describe euphemistically as "conservative", could be observed best when one of the main characters trying to push the investigation is identified as the wife of a local politician by a police man using a partriarchally biased comment. This scene alone shows his limited imagination when it comes to gender-biased occupations, as it is obviously not possible in the director's society construct for women to occupy political leadership positions. If this is the understanding of gender-related topics of someone who is dealing with a highly gender-biased issue it will not only not contribute to the cause of deconstructing Human Trafficking, but rather damage those efforts by promoting stereotypes that are believed to have died decades ago.

What is the obsession with human trafficking??
dcmiess25 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is the strangest movie and rabbit hole I've fallen down in a while. Do people realize that sexual crimes are much much more likely to be committed by someone the victim knows? And that it's the guy next door who goes to sleep afterwords and no one ever reports it, not some weird underground kidnapping ring. While the situation in this movie is I suppose possible, it is extremely unlikely. The end of the movie preaches that people need to pay attention to the horrors of child trafficking. If a woman like amber was kidnapped, it would be a front page story. The media loves White girls in upper-class families that are kidnapped. I can think of five famous ones off the top of my head. There's no lack of people caring about these girls. We don't need to spread the word about these girls because this is incredibly publicized and well documented - and happen close to never. Now the story of the other slaves? It is extremely rare for parents to sell their children (although mine may have wanted to.. ha ha) but there are children in extreme poverty in the US who may have had this happen. But these people are also EXTREMLY RARE. But at least a story about these women would have been interesting and not just an after school special. If we want to talk about a cause, let's talk about sexual assault in the us as a whole. There's no conspiracy hiding sexual trafficking, but it's rare and we are ignoring the real issue of sexual assault.

Anyway, my gripes with the strange social issues aside, this movie is pretty bad. The acting is terrible. The characters act like aliens. One girl is so drunk she forgets what the word "drunk" is. No one does this! Amber is held hostage in a shady motel forced to have sexual with multiple men a day even though she's front page news around the country. These men are also shown spending very small amountS to do this. If a front page news girl is being sold for such small amounts when these men could easily turn him him for much higher reward money, this must be the worst pimp of all time. Also, the weird prayer circle of the moms instead of canvassing for this girl was also wild. In the end, this gets a two because there was a plot and I finished it. Amber a shell of herself after escaping was actually a pretty realistic reaction to trauma and decent acting. I guess I was entertained, and if you have a strong obsession with child trafficking, I guess this movie is for you.

Horrific subject matter-everything else about this movie was awful. Sex trafficking needs to be brought to the forefront absolutely but I wasn't rooting for 1 person in this movie. If you want to watch an excellent movie about this subject, please watch Trafficked from 2017. I cried while writing that review

The Cleveland Kidnapping
tuble_oliver25 January 2020
This is obviously the story of the serial rapist Ariel Castro who kidnapped the victims Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina de Jesus. Tortured and made them his sex slaves for 11 years. In 2013 luckily the three were able to escape from the hell house of Castro with the help of the latter's black neighbor who was shocked on how the evil Castro kept them for more than a decade without creating suspincion from his neighbors. After few minutes finally they were rescued by the cops.

Great message, horrible everything else.
retiredemo30 April 2022
I made an account just so I could comment on how awful this film was. The message was really great, human trafficking happens every single day, and it's awful. Evil exists everywhere, I know that, but what I don't know is how anyone saw the finished product that is this film and let it loose into the world where people with eyes can see. The awful over-acting and forced crying gave me so much secondhand embaressment that I almost couldn't finish it. I know this is based on a true story, but was it necessary to make the black girl look like a willing participant? Who greenlit this script? Who's responsible for directing this? I hope they put the pen down and never write another script again. Please. I hope the actresses are/were able to find work after this film.

Disappointing in every way
writetonight-126 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
An important topic like this deserved a better film. A lot of these reviews bashed the actors. The acting wasn't stellar, but there was a lot wrong with this film that made the actors look bad. The dialogue was poorly written and came off unnatural. The characters were bland. There are scenes that last forever and do nothing to move the story forward. There are strange situations, like a cop questioning one teen character in his high school hallway after others were questioned at the police station.

There's a group of worried parents who decide they have to do something to find Amber after she is kidnapped, but all they do is pray. Likewise, after her rescue, Amber becomes an activist, and makes a speech saying "We have to do more than talk!" Yet all she does is talk. There's a lot of babble about "raising awareness" but no practical advice for preventing this crime.

The sound quality was poor. I heard a slight echo in some scenes. The score was nonexistent.

The editing was bad. There were some scenes that went nowhere and could have been cut.

The story of the two other trafficking victims who Amber encounters is not wrapped up well.

This movie is important
koofasa12 August 2019
While the script, acting and writing are not top notch it isn't so bad that you cannot watch. If you're watching for the content like I am it is worth your time. This is a tragic story that is realistic in today's world. Sex trafficking needs to stop and until people make it an issue to tackle, we need movies like this that keep it in mind.

Hijacking the Brain...Kidnapping the Innocence...Take Action Now
ladyann12136 January 2016
In this film we are taken to one of the darkest abyss humans can actually visit. Within this abyss, there is a hijacking of the brain and the willpower along with the murder of innocence, the extreme fright, the possibility of disease and the compelling control of the sick. To remain human after such an experience will be the only word that can fit...SURVIVOR. The only way to get to the survivor is with the help and fight of family, contentious human kindness and support, and the will of the Lord. The selling or trafficking of humans is beyond understanding in this day and age yet it is happening in our country right under our noses in our own neighborhoods. The kidnapping of the unsuspecting violating any trust is part of the recovery that takes the longest. But action is needed and needed now. I applaud this young woman for reaching out and beign the VOICE for the victims. I am an addiction psychologist specialist and I see this many times in clients that have been trying to survive with my professional help! More power to those who become aware and DO SOMETHING! Save our youth! LadyAnn68
