Tunnel vision in Curtain
“It really began in the shower,” says Jaron Henrie-McCrea, talking about the idea behind his new film Curtain. “I come up with a lot of my ideas when I’m taking a shower. Nothing good was coming and I was staring at curtain when I wondered, what if it was gone? What if it suddenly disappeared?”
It’s a simple idea which led to a film that has wowed the festival circuit. Curtain (also known as The Gateway) tells the story of a young woman, Danni (Danni Smith), who moves into a new flat where disappearing shower curtains lead her to fear that someone is breaking in – only to discover something far more sinister. Initially, though, it was a tough idea to sell.
“I got to work on the script and I thought it was so good that I sent it to a writing competition but it was immediately rejected,...

Danni moves into a New York apartment and starts sprucing the place up. She doesn’t know the previous tenant committed suicide in very strange circumstances. Nor does she know there’s a mysterious portal to another dimension in the bathroom that’s hungry for… shower curtains! But where does this unusual gateway hidden behind the white tiling lead? That’s what Danni and her whale-saving workmate Tim decide to find out. It’s an investigation into a unique phenomenon full of surprise and unimaginable horror as they both enter The Yonder.
Sometimes there are films that, despite having a cohesive synopsis (see above), actually defy a traditional narrative explanation. Rubber is one such film, Curtain is another… Yet both share a similar sense of “Wtf am I watching...

Something strange is afoot. There's a mysterious portal to another dimension in the bathroom and it's hungry for ... shower curtains?Welcome to the very odd premise for Jaron Henrie-McCrea's Curtain, a microbudget indie shot in New York City and New Jersey and now shifting into post production. They're raising funds for post on Kickstarter now and while the teaser trailer definitely shows the budget limits it also shows a whole lot of creativity. Here's hoping they get what they need ......

A documentary about a giant King Kong statue? A horror film about a shower curtain? It can only be Crowdfunding Friday...
On the 3rd March, Kickstarter passed a significant milestone in its five years of existence. Across a variety of projects, around 5.7 million people made pledges amounting to $1bn - a phenomenal sum, particularly when you consider that half of that cash was put forward within the past year. It's a sign, perhaps, of how established crowdfunding has become, and how quickly it's growing - particularly when we consider that Kickstarter is by no means the only platform of its type on the web.
You can find more statistics about Kickstarter's last five years here, as well as a few handy facts. We now know, for example, that $1bn will buy you 44,555 RoboCop statues, or alternatively, one Roman Colosseum. Meanwhile, here's this week's selection of crowdfunding projects.
