Two lousy stories
lor_10 February 2024
This Pure Taboo DVD has no taboos, just crummy stories. Only the most diehard fans of this series will enjoy them.

Title scene.is mighty weak, it has its moments. Those moments come from the script (by Penicio Del Toro) being truly reflexive about the porn business, especially when it comes to star Penny Barber. She must have really enjoyed "play-acting" a rather transparent version of who she is, giving a tongue-in-cheek quality to an otherwise "serious" drama. (This is a writing methodology that at its best can reach the heights of a series like "Succession" -enjoyable on several levels at once. In movies, Billy Wilder was a master of this craft.)

Robby Echo and Penny Barber play a married couple, just moved into their new house and thinking about planning to have a family. The phone rings and Robby gets a call informing the stock market has crashed (by 70%!). Robby and Penny were just remarking on how successful their recent career together investing in crypto-currencies was going, and suddenly they're wiped out.

With "no marketable skills" between them, the couple is instantly in trouble, and after Penny fails at job interviews, layabout Robby suggests she might be able to earn their keep as an "escort". Balking at first at such a suggestion, she gives it a try and is successful, though the directing team of Dan & Rhiannon Anatomik do an extremely poor (read: cheap) job of storytelling: a montage of all-dressed-up Penny coming home over and over, to suggest she's been out on tricks -no sex scene or any supporting cast of johns is shown.

Robby is happy that they're soon in the black again and done with the Bitcoin rat race and suggests that in a few months she'll be able to stop hooking. But no, Penny declares: "I'm never going back to crypto. I think my new job is respectable". To prove this, she pretends that hubby Robby is one of her clients and treats him to a full session, including anal sex, and he's thrilled. Story ends on a sour note, an okay plot twist.

Penny, who began as an expert solo porn artist playing to the camera with her sexy monologues on-line, is perfect casting here, with her fake passion during sex with Robby having a double-edge, and true sincerity behind her reciting lines defending porn and sex work, which after all is her life story. Robby, who likes to bill himself stupidly as "Robby Apples" lately, is not much help here in making the scene work.

Ricky Greenwood, in recent years one of porn's most lauded directors, stubs his toe with "Good Twin, Bad Twin", a dull, bad joke of a XXX vignette, with much blame due to Gamma Entertainment's resident hack screenwriter Midnight. The dumb story is transparent from the git-go (even the title gives away the gimmick), and poorly executed all the way.

Lucky Fate stars, playing a pair of twins: Ryder and Chris. Ryder stops in a coffeehouse and immediately begins coming on to the waitress Eilse (4'11" starlet Stevie Moon). He's way too harassing and gets slapped and thrown out of the place by her. Then twin Chris shows up to apologize, and she's so thrilled at the twin's chivalry that she asks him for a date (yeah, right).

They come home from the date, and make love on Chris' couch, with an emphasis on anal sex. The money shot is poorly photographed -invisible from a camera across the room, and then Chris recites a little speech to give a supposedly O. Henry surprise ending. But it was obvious what this dumb story was all about.

With poor sound recording (much of the dialogue is sloughed off), and Stevie's non-acting (she is strictly a gonzo performer) this is perhaps the worst work I've ever seen from Ricky (IMDb lists me at seeing 89% of his titles to date) and the less said about Stevie Moon he better.
