At one point, Mr. McLean sits before a locker with the number 86 on it. To "86" something is slang for getting rid of or killing it.
Neither of the Australian Rules teams referenced in this episode would have ever existed in 1920's Melbourne. The West Melbourne football club (Wests) was dissolved in 1908 and wore the colours red and white, not black and royal blue stripes as this episode would have you believe. Wests went on to be merged with North Melbourne, who now wear royal blue and white stripes. Although Abbotsford has never existed as an Aussie Rules football team (citation needed here), Victoria Park in Abbotsford Victoria was the historic headquarters of the Collingwood Magpies until 2005. Some very clever Aussie Rules footy fiction by the writers of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries to deal with the litigious VFL fanatics.
