Rides pretty well on charm alone

I know we're only three episodes in, but Barry's sustained indignance isn't working for me. It's that awkward form of sitcom writing where the volume continually goes up. Although his time working for his dad's furniture store is pretty funny.

What really did work for me was the Beverly/Adam dynamic. The Poltergeist clown scare, the vindictive personality; Mom's a criminal mastermind, and Wendi Mclendon-Covey is one of my favorite parts of the show.

Settling in

Warning: Spoilers
Plot; When Barry asks for an expensive new pair of basketball shoes, Murray decides to make him earn them by working with him at the store.

Settling into the comfortable formula of (humorous) conflict with a warm resolution, Goldbergs continues to make me laugh and then make me smile. Modest, but noble goals.

This show is settling in well, but could do with varying its plots, especially where the Mum is concerned. I've watched the first three episodes, and her storyline has pretty much been the same each time.

The Creator/inspiration Adam F Goldberg (no, not the Adam Goldberg who was in 'Friends' and tore up its spin-off 'Joey') claimed he wanted to "create a Wonder Years for the 80's", and although 'The Goldbergs' has an awful long way to go before it rivals that show, it is shaping up to be a decent enough show.
