A decent start, but the creative team needs to put in some more effort.
It was truly a proud moment to see our beloved Kapil Sharma on a prestigious platform like Netflix, but at the same time i was quite disappointed with the first episode.
WHAT'S GOOD :
1. The new set looked beautiful. I always wanted Kapil Sharma Show's set to have a grandeur at par with that of popular international shows hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and Graham Norton, and this new show has done exactly that.
2. The coming together of Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover would easily go down as one of the happiest moments of the year 2023. It was wonderful to see Sunil Grover return to the place where he always belonged. The anticipation to watch the show increased ten times just because of his presence.
WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD :
1. The most important thing about a comedy show is it's ability to make you laugh, and unfortunately this episode failed to deliver on that aspect. The jokes went flat, the writing was extremely dull, and Kapil almost turned the show into a boring interview with his monotonous questions. It's quite baffling that even after more than a decade in this profession, Kapil Sharma hasn't mastered the art of taking an interview. It was Ranbir who tried to infuse some humour into the conversation, otherwise Kapil and his team of writers were trying very hard to induce boredom into the viewers. Kiku Sharda couldn't crack a single joke in his segment as a Chef while Sunil Grover tried very hard but his act came across more as a show off than one designed to make you laugh. It was only Krishna Abhishek who managed to throw some life into an otherwise lifeless episode.
2. Why has Netflix reduced the duration of the show ? The episode felt heavily edited and just didn't have the feel of the previous shows done by Kapil and his team. Very little time was allotted to Krishna Abhishek and Kiku Sharda's act, which used to be the funniest segment of Kapil's previous show. These comedians need some time and space, along with a good script of course, to perform to their utmost potential; hoping for them to act like robots would be an extremely unfair ask. They are all terrific comedians but you need to allow them some breathing space. Almost every episode of 'The Kapil Sharma Show' used to be around 70-75 minutes long, while this episode wasn't even an hour long.
3. What is Archana Puran Singh doing on the show ? Every single person needs to ask this question to Kapil Sharma and Netflix. She has absolutely no contribution to the show, interrupts the proceedings unnecessarily with some boring questions and the worst part is that she gets paid for being a member of the audience ! Why do you need an irritating Archana Puran Singh when you have a massive live audience to laugh at your jokes ? I would seriously request Kapil and Netflix to remove her because she adds nothing to the show. Also, if you have so much money then its better to bring in Chandan Prabhakar and Sumona Chakravarti into the show, actors who actually made an effort to entertain the viewers.
4. Was Netflix trying to whitewash the image of Ranbir Kapoor with this episode, because it clearly felt like that on a number of occasions. I really hope the creative team doesn't end up killing the fun vibe of the show in an attempt to do such stupid things.
It's great to see Kapil achieving another milestone of his life, but he and his creative team really need to pull up their socks because as an audience we deserve something much better than what they put up in the first episode.
