S2 Review, natural growth/improvement
I really enjoyed season one, though I felt it wasn't perfect - I was looking forward to a second season. Like many when it released I was totally caught of guard, I wasn't sure we'd get a season 2.
S2 was in many ways better and some ways the same. The animation jumped quite a bit in quality which was great. The main Gods that s2 focuses on I found interesting and like s1 felt right out of a tragic Greek myth. Hades was a good focus and I like how he was sympathetic where most Greek mythology adaptations make him a bland villain. I felt for his plight and was invested in him as a character. I think the drama between the Gods felt natural and I appreciate that the conflict was the result of season one. Stakes are important and I'm glad things weren't immediately solved.
Unfortunately like s1 I found Heron still to be not as fascinating as the other main characters. He has an arc in both seasons but overall Seraphim was far more interesting to follow. That being said I like where Heron goes as a character this season and thought his choices in the last episode showed good and natural character growth. My slight disinterest in him comes from the fact that the season doesn't spend much time with him till the ladder half of the season. The show almost doesn't feel like it has time for him or his friends by the time the second half of the season starts. He has some good moral decisions/dilemmas to work through in this season which I wish had more time to cook. On that note Alexia and Heron need a more convincing relationship if the show is to set up a romance or write them as close friends. They've spent plenty of time together at this point but don't have any chemistry on screen due to the situations we see them in. We need time to see them naturally bond, like have genuine conversations where they get to know each other. Koffi is just there, hopefully they'll find something for him to do.
Seraphim was my favorite part of season one and that carries over here. I think the writers knew they had a good character and chose to use that. Here they give him more backstory that I feel fits well with what we already know about him. I like his involvement this season and his use again feels natural. He continues to be a tortured soul/tragic villain who now has interesting source of motivation outside of revenge.
Overall I think it's as good as season one with better animation and a story that feels like a natural progression of what we saw. The story has stakes and consequences which really I appreciate. I do think the show struggles with writing exposition in natural ways, Season 2 is definitely better at than season 1 but that's still an area needing improvement.
I like the set up for season 3! Hopefully it doesn't take a few years to produce.
