Mutant Hurlant Chronicles - The Endomorph
Scarecrow-883 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
So there's this planet with a certain type of resource humans can benefit from but the ore needs to be mined so who better than cheap labor in the form of robotoids? However, when a meteor lands on the planet, the robotoids turn against their makers and a war breaks out. Michael Jai White (I still have a hard time understanding why this guy isn't turning up in lots of action movies considering he has the look and charisma needed for such parts) leads a small band of human commandos trying to stay one step ahead of the robotoids (led by a hideous, monstrous robotoid that looks like a mechanized demon from hell), with a mission to get a specific "endomorph" to a destination that will help them defeat their foes. It appears as if the endomorph is a child with a pet rabbit, but the twist will reveal that the lead robotoid is incorrect in who he believes is a "worthless human sacrifice". The apocalyptic look of a devastated landscape gone straight to war-torn hell, dark and foreboding, with trenches dug, signs of human defeat quite evident, the planet of this episode is quite a setting for what occurs within it. However, 20 minutes just isn't long enough to develop such a science fiction / action / horror show plot that seems more deserved of an hour treatment. To White's credit, he gives a heartfelt performance as this dedicated soldier with a murdered wife and deep belief that his mission will be successful despite the not-so-promising odds. He really doesn't get a lot of time, either, to really flex much dramatic muscle but does what he can with what he has. The conclusion with the giant rabbit kind of turns a rather intense story into a laughable disappointment. Still the demonic-looking robotoid is impressive and the actor (Fabien Houssaye) portraying it really acts the part of this ferocious, demented, and assured leader, totally convinced his army will easily defeat the remaining humans left in his trajectory. To only have 20 minutes within a 30 minute format, "The Endomorph" tries to make its mark even though I sense that if given more time, this could have been quite a treat for post-apoc, gloom-doom sci-fi fans. Somebody please give White his own series if you can't find movies for him to be a hero in…he's a comic book hero in the making (and I'm purposely ignoring "Spawn") if provided with the right part.
