Princess Zelda : Link... Open your eyes... Wake up, Link.

  • Princess Zelda : [in a Flashback, Link and Zelda are running through the woods north of the Bottomless Swamp near the Hylia River. It is raining, and they are injured and dirty. Zelda accidentally lets go of Link's hand, and he stops running to go back to her]  How... How did it come to this? The Divine Beasts... The Guardians... They've all turned against us. It was... Calamity Ganon. It turned them all against us! And everyone - Mipha, Urbosa, Revali and Daruk... They're all trapped inside those things... It's all my fault! Our only hope for defeating Ganon is lost, all because I couldn't harness this cursed power! Everything - everything I've done up until now... It was all for nothing. So I really am just a failure! All my friends... the entire kingdom... my father most of all. I tried, and I failed them all. I've left them... all to die.

    [she cries in Link's arms]

  • King of Hyrule : [to Link, after he has completed the Great Plateau quests]  Well done there, young one! Now, then... The time has come to show you who I truly am. I was King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule. I was... the last leader of Hyrule. A kingdom which no longer exists.

King of Hyrule : [the King sheds his Old Man disguise and reveals his spirit form, in regal garb]  The Great Calamity was merciless. It devastated everything in its path, lo, a century ago. It was then that my life was taken away from me. And since that time, here I have remained, in spirit form. I did not think it wise to overwhelm you while your memory was still fragile. So rather than that, I thought it best to assume a temporary form. Forgive me. I think you are now ready. Ready to hear what happened 100 years ago.

King of Hyrule : [a flashback shows scenes of old Hyrule, its castle, and a tapestry]  To know Calamity Ganon's true form, one must know the story from an age long past. The demon king was born into this kingdom, but the transformation into Malice created the horror you see now. Stories of Ganon were passed from generation to generation in the form of legends and fairy tales. But there was also... a prophecy. "The signs of a resurrection of Calamity Ganon are clear. And the power to oppose it lies dormant beneath the ground."

King of Hyrule : [in a flashback, Sheikah men chip away at a cliff wall on scaffolding]  We decided to heed the prophecy and began excavating large areas of land. It wasn't long before we discovered several ancient relics made by the hands of our distant ancestors. These relics, the Divine Beasts, were giant machines piloted by warriors. We also found the Guardians, an army of mechanical soldiers who fought autonomously. This coincided with ancient legends, oft repeated throughout our land. We also learned of a princess with a sacred power and her appointed knight, chosen by the sword that seals the darkness. It was they who sealed Ganon away using the power of these ancient relics. One hundred years ago, there was a princess set to inherit a sacred power and a skilled knight at her side. It was clear that we must follow our ancestors' path.

King of Hyrule : [a flashback shows, with hidden faces, a ceremony with the champions in the past]  We selected four skilled individuals from across Hyrule and tasked them with the duty of piloting the Divine Beasts. With the princess as their commander, we dubbed these pilots Champions - a name that would solidify their unique bond. The princess, her appointed knight, and the rest of the Champions were on the brink of sealing away Ganon. But nay... Ganon was cunning, and he responded with a plan beyond our imagining.

King of Hyrule : [Calamity Ganon comes out of the middle of Hyrule Castle and its evil influence corrupts nearby Guardians and the four Divine Beasts]  He appeared from deep below Hyrule Castle, seized control of the Guardians and the Divine Beasts, and turned them against us. The Champions lost their lives. Those residing in the castle as well. The appointed knight, gravely wounded, collapsed while defending the princess. And thus, the kingdom of Hyrule was devastated absolutely by Calamity Ganon.

King of Hyrule : [Zelda stands in front of Hyrule Castle by herself]  However... The princess survived... to face Ganon alone.

Princess Zelda : Link... You are our final hope. The fate of Hyrule rests with you.

King of Hyrule : [back in the present]  That princess was my own daughter... My dear Zelda. And the courageous knight who protected her right up to the very end... That knight was none other than you, Link. You fought valiantly when your fate took an unfortunate turn. And then, you were taken to the Shrine of Resurrection. Here you now stand revitalized, 100 years later. The words of guidance you have been hearing since your awakening are from Princess Zelda herself. Even now, as she works to restrain Ganon from within Hyrule Castle, she calls out for your help. However, my daughter's power will soon be exhausted. Once that happens, Ganon will freely regenerate himself and nothing will stop him from consuming our land.

  • Daruk : [in a flashback, Zelda and Link return from the Spring of Wisdom at the top of Mount Lanayru]  Well? Don't keep us in suspense. How'd everything go up there on the mountain?

Princess Zelda : [Zelda gives a negative vocalization and shakes her head; everyone looks downtrodden]

Revali : So you didn't feel anything? No power at all?

Princess Zelda : I'm sorry, no.

Urbosa : Then let's move on. You've done all you could. Feeling sorry for yourself won't be of any help. After all, it's not like your last shot was up there on Mount Lanayru. Anything could finally spark the power to seal Ganon away. We just have to keep looking for that... thing.

Princess Zelda : [Mipha looks at Link watching Zelda and the rest of them, and gets an idea]  That's kind of you. Thank you.

Mipha : If I may... I thought you... Well, I'm not sure how to put this into words... I'm actually quite embarrassed to say it. But I was thinking about what I do when I'm healing. You know, what usually goes through my mind. It helps when I think... when I think about -

[she is interrupted by a loud rumbling earthquake that jostles the five of them about]

Urbosa : [Revali flies up to see what happened, and to his dismay, Calamity Ganon has emerged from inside Hyrule Castle, with magenta lighting bolts in the skies high above it. When he lands again, Urbosa says]  It's here.

Daruk : This is it, then...

    Mipha : Are you sure?

    Revali : Positive.

Princess Zelda : [quietly]  It's awake... Ganon!

Daruk : [Zelda is paralyzed by fear and doesn't know what to do]  Let's stop wasting time! We're gonna need everything we got to take that thing down! Now Champions! To your Divine Beasts! Show that swirling swine who's boss! Link will need to meet Ganon head on when we attack! This needs to be a unified assault! Little guy! You get to Hyrule Castle.

    [Revali scoffs in annoyance]

Daruk : You can count on us for support, but it's up to you to pound Ganon into oblivion!

Urbosa : Come. We should go. We need to get you someplace safe.

Princess Zelda : No! I am not a child anymore! I may not be much use on the battlefield, but there must... there must be something I can do to help!

  • [last lines]

Princess Zelda : [Link and Zelda stand on a hillside in south Hyrule after having defeated Ganon completely]  I can no longer hear the voice inside the sword. I suppose it would make sense if my power had dwindled over the past 100 years...

[she turns around to face Link]

Princess Zelda : I'm surprised to admit it... but I can accept that.

[she giggles and smiles at Link as the camera pans out across a field of Silent Princess flowers]

  • Urbosa : [in a flashback, Zelda is sleeping on Urbosa's lap, both of them reclined on a outer area of Vah Naboris. Link approaches them]  Ah, well... you certainly got here fast. I should have expected as much, from the princess's own appointed knight. She was out on a survey all day today. Still as the sands now. So...? Spill it, boy. Have the two of you been getting along all right? It's okay, I know. Your silence speaks volumes. She gets frustrated every time she looks up and sees you carrying that sword on your back. It makes her feel like a failure when it comes to her own destiny. Don't worry, it's not like you carry blame in any of this. It's unfortunate. She's put in more than enough time. Ever since she was a young girl, she's gone through rigorous daily routines to show her dedication. She once passed out in the freezing waters trying to access this sealing power. And she has nothing to show for it. That's the motivation driving her research. I'd be doing the same thing. She really is quite... special. You be sure to protect her with your life. It's quite the honor. The night brings a chill. It's probably time we take her in.

    [to herself]

    Urbosa : Hmm... Or...

[Urbosa snaps her fingers, and a bolt of lightning strikes nearby Vah Naboris, waking Zelda up]

Princess Zelda : [gasps in surprise]  Urbosa! What was that? Did you feel that?

[she turns around and sees Link standing there]

Princess Zelda : Wait, what - how did you... what are you doing here?

Urbosa : [laughs uproarously at Zelda's confusion over Link's sudden appearance]

Princess Zelda : Wh-what's so funny?

  • Princess Zelda : [in a flashback to the time when Zelda proclaimed Link to be her personal knight]  Hero of Hyrule, chosen by the sword that seals the darkness. You have shown unflinching bravery and skill in the face of darkness and adversity, and have proven yourself worthy of the blessings of the Goddess Hylia. Whether skyward bound, adrift in time, or steeped in the glowing embers of twilight, the sacred blade is forever bound to the soul of the Hero. We pray for your protection, and we hope that... that the two of you will grow stronger together, as one.

[Zelda takes a long pause to collect her thoughts]

Princess Zelda : Forged in the long distant past, the sword that seals the darkness...

    [fades out under Daruk's speech]

Daruk : [to Revali, gathered with the rest of the Champions]  Gee, this is uplifting. She's making it sound like we already lost.

Revali : Wasn't this your idea? You're the one who wanted to designate the appointed knight with all the ceremonial pomp, grandeur, and nonsense we could muster! And if you ask me, the whole thing does seem to be overkill. I think I'm on the same page as the princess regarding... this boy.

Urbosa : Oh, give it a rest. That boy is a living reminder of her own failures. Well, at least that's how the princess sees him.

  • Princess Zelda : [in a flashback, Zelda observes the Guardians being tested by Sheikah attendants from a walkway balcony outside her room]  Incredible. We're at a point now where we can actually control them. At the current rate, we'll soon know all we need to know about the Guardians and the Divine Beasts! And should Ganon ever show itself again, we'll be well positioned to defend ourselves.

King of Hyrule : [with a tone of subdued anger]  What are you doing out here, Zelda?

Princess Zelda : I... I was assessing the results of the experiment with the Guardians. These pieces of ancient technology could be quite useful against the...

King of Hyrule : I know that. They are essential to Hyrule's future, and our research demands that we keep a close eye on them. However, as the princess, you currently have a crucial unfulfilled responsibility to your kingdom. Let me ask you once more... When will you stop treating this as some sort of childish game?

Princess Zelda : I'm doing everything I can. I'll have you know that I just recently returned from the Spring of Courage where I offered every ounce of my prayers to the Goddess...

King of Hyrule : And now you are here wasting your time. You need to be dedicating every moment you have to your training. You must be single-minded in unlocking the power that will seal Calamity Ganon away.

Princess Zelda : I already am. Don't you see - there's nothing more I can do! My hope is... My hope is that you... That you'll allow me to contribute here in whatever way I can!

King of Hyrule : No more excuses, Zelda! Stop running away from your duty. As the king, I forbid you to have anything to do with these machines from this moment on, and command you to focus on your training. Do you know how the gossip mongers refer to you? They are out there at this moment, whispering amongst themselves... that you are the heir to a throne of nothing... nothing but failure. It is woven into your destiny that you prove them wrong. Do you understand?

Princess Zelda : Yes. I understand.

  • Princess Zelda : [in a flashback, somewhere near Blatchery Plain or Ash Swamp, Guardians corrupted by Calamity Ganon's influence run amok, leaving destruction and fires everywhere. One of them notices a filthy and injured Link and Zelda struggling to their feet. Link is much more severely injured than Zelda is]  Link, save yourself! Go! I'll be fine! Don't worry about me! Run!

[Link musters up the strength to pull the Master Sword out of the ground, and struggles to stand up in an attempt to protect Zelda from the Guardian. The Guardian rapidly approaches them and charges its laser in preparation to attack]

    Princess Zelda : No!

[Zelda quickly gets between the Guardian and Link and raises her arm at a last-ditch effort to save him. Her power awakens and beams of light come out of her hand, and the power of the Triforce destroys all of the Guardians in the area. Ganon's influence leaves each one of the disabled Guardians]

Princess Zelda : Was... was that...? The power...

[Link collapses behind her, she runs over to him]

Princess Zelda : No, no... Link! Get up!

    Link : [coughs twice]

Princess Zelda : You're going to be just fine...

[Link looks at her for a moment with pain, then blacks out unconscious. Zelda cries over his nearly lifeless body. While she cries, the Master Sword makes the sound of Fi from "Skyward Sword", and glows]

Princess Zelda : The sword...? So he can... He can still be saved?

Sheikah guard : [two Sheikah guards arrive and run up to Zelda with great urgency]  Princess!

[they arrive and kneel before her and Link]

Sheikah guard : Princess! Are you all right?

Princess Zelda : Take Link to the Shrine of Resurrection. If you don't get him there immediately, we are going to lose him forever! Is that clear?

    [they nod]

Princess Zelda : So make haste and go! His life is now in your hands!

  • Princess Zelda : [in a flashback, Zelda is covered in dirt and lays the Master Sword on its pedestal in the Korok Forest at the base of the Great Deku Tree]  Your master will come for you. Until then, you shall rest safely here. Although the Slumber of Restoration will most certainly deprive him of his memories, please trust me when I say that I know he will arrive before you yet again.

Great Deku Tree : [interrupting her prayer]  If I may be so bold... what is it that you are planning to do next, Princess?

Princess Zelda : The Master Sword... I heard it speak to me. It seems that my role is unfinished. There is still something I must do.

Great Deku Tree : I sense there is great strength in your dedication.

Princess Zelda : Great Deku Tree, I ask of you, when he returns, can you please relay this message... Tell him I...

Great Deku Tree : Now, then... Words intended for him would sound much better in the tones of your voice, don't you think?

Princess Zelda : [smiling with her hands clasped]  Yes.

[Zelda places the Master Sword straight down into its pedestal]

Great Deku Tree : [in the present, Link swings the sword a few times and then places it in its scabbard on his back]  What you just saw happened where you stand 100 years ago... After you were separated from the sword, the princess thought to bring it here, where she knew that it would be safe under my watch. She continues to fight, trapped deep within the confines of Hyrule Castle. Her heart cascades with faith that you will return. She has a smile like the sun. I would do much to feel its warmth upon me once again.

  • King of Hyrule : [in a DLC flashback, at the ceremony in the throne room to commemorate the Champions of the Divine Beasts; all four Champions, Zelda, Link, and attendants or guards from each of the five races in Hyrule are in the room, with the King and his personal guards on a higher balcony]  Welcome, warriors! I'd like to thank you for joining me here today, and for your bravery in accepting this... fateful task. I officially appoint you Hyrule's Champions and bestow upon you this sacred garb. That blue is a symbol of the Royal Family, one that has been passed down for countless generations. Those garments you now wear were all crafted by my daughter, Zelda. Zelda. I trust you with the task only a daughter of the royal family can fulfill. Lead our Champions, Princess. And together, protect our kingdom from the threat of Calamity Ganon.

    [outside, fireworks explode]

Daruk : [later on, the Champions, Link, and Zelda gather at a gazebo on one of the lower areas outside the castle, but still on its grounds]  I tell ya, those formal shindigs really take it outta me.

Revali : [examining the Sheikah Slate Zelda holds, he takes it from her hands]  Hmph. This is the Sheikah Slate, eh?

Princess Zelda : It is. Apparently there are more uses for it than we originally thought. Sadly, we've yet to decipher all of its secrets.

[Revali places the slate in Mipha's hands]

Urbosa : [leaning down to get a closer look at it]  The princess showed me something strange recently. Somehow it can create true-to-life images.

Mipha : Oh, wow. I would love to see it. Um, Princess... May I ask a special favor of you?

[she looks over at Link, and Revali follows her gaze. Daruk, standing near Link, looks at him too]

Purah : [a short time later, an off-screen Purah directs everyone into place for a photo]  All right! This spot should work nicely.

[Zelda looks unsure of herself, but very proper]

Purah : Keep your eyes on the Sheikah Slate, everyone!

[Daruk looms large behind everyone; Revali stands off to the left, disinterested. Mipha is off to the right and very stiff and nervous. Urbosa's arms are crossed as she stares directly into the lens. Link similarly looks at the lens with a steely gaze]

Purah : Daruk, can you crouch down a bit? You're as big as Death Mountain.

[Revali changes position and puts his arms down at his side while turning away from everyone; Link and Zelda look up at Daruk. Daruk crouches down]

Purah : What's with the glum face, Princess? Gimme a big smile!

[Mipha looks back at Daruk, shuffles closer to the center, and resumes her stiff pose. Revali sighs with exasperation. Urbosa relaxes a bit and adjusts her position, arms still crossed, but slightly smiling]

Purah : Revali, move your tail closer to the group.

    Revali : Ugh, fine.

Purah : Mipha, you look so tense. Deep breaths, okay?

    Mipha : Right!

[she does some breathing exercises, and then resumes her pose from before, only slightly more relaxed. During all this, Daruk surveys the group with a concerned face. Everyone is much more nicely posed now, and closer together]

Purah : Stay just like that! Here we go! Smile...

[Daruk, looking slightly down while thinking, suddenly grins with an idea]

    Purah : Click, snap!

[at the moment Purah takes the picture, Daruk pulls everyone together in a bear hug, causing mild chaos as Revali and Mipha are caught off guard by his large arms, thrust forward into the picture with shock. Urbosa smiles down at Zelda, who is likewise surprised, and Link seems like he doesn't know what just happened. Daruk has the biggest grin of them all]
