Personally I find John to be particularly odious, as well as being a thoroughly cretinous character, who most definitely wants to have his, proverbial cake and perpetually gorge on it. Not content with helping to destroy, his own marriage to Caroline with his girlfriend Judith, he attempts to wheedle his way back, into her affections and the family home. By a combination of totally insincere platitudes, and claiming what amounts to squatters rights, by refusing to take any of Caroline's not too subtle hints.
John also perpetually claims that "he and Judith are not an item", until Caroline mentions her friend Kate, then John can't wait to get together with his continual flame.
Gillian really is her own worst enemy when it comes, to her disastrous lack of judgement concerning blokes, and given the growing closeness of the two families, she shouldn't really be surprised by her, dirty laundry being publicly aired.
Or by her family life suddenly appear, to disintegrate around her, after all her dad has gone through he surely, deserves his daughters comfort and support, not her meanness of spirit.
