a way underrated movie!
rednailpolish124 January 2016
Do you have a soulmate? Someone who you can share everything with, someone you have everything in common with and known for your whole life? A friend whom you love so dearly you sometimes confuse it with real/romantic love? If so, I think, you will find yourself liking this movie a lot!!

When you have a friend in world class whom you never want to part with the worst feeling in the world can be if your friend finds himself another friend OR a boyfriend/girlfriend who might come in between your friendship. Sometimes it is hard to accept that everything cannot stay the way it always has - everything changes as you grow up.

Naomi and Ely have been best friends and lived next to each other their whole lives. They know everything about each other and share everything. Ely is gay which lets them have a very intimate relationship without having to be afraid of falling in love with each other. Everything starts to change when a guy gets in the picture and it suddenly is no longer just Naomi and Ely. The fair of having to share Ely with others makes Naomi sad and a bit passive aggressive - she wants him all to herself and wants everything to stay the same. But maybe change isn't so bad after all. If the friendship is real it will survive everything. And one might learn that love can be many things.

Everyone has their own opinion. In my opinion this movie was a blast to watch and it really just spoke to me!!! I value friendship very much and I know what it is like to feel like you have a soulmate and you are afraid it won't always stay the same way! I feel certain I will watch it again very soon!

PS PLEASE don't be absurd and hate this movie JUST BECAUSE there are gay people involved!!

Ummm... 2015?
tradairn25 June 2018
This was enjoyable enough as indie rom-coms go, even though I didn't get (missed?) what motivated Naomi's coming out of denial at the end of Act Two... My biggest Hunh? came when I checked the release date at the end of the movie... I know she was only 18, but as a young woman living in New York in 2015, I found it incredible that she wasn't gay-savvy enough not to have fallen in love with Ely, or at least acknowledge that it could never work out... That kind of naive self-delusion was more fitting for a girl in the more innocent 1970's (I'm thinking of my younger sister, who had a gay BF she developed a crush on) - it's hard to believe that could still happen almost 50 years later in our current culture... In any case, should be popular with teenage girls.

Ultimately falls into a clichéd, predictable friendship tiff
r96sk30 March 2020
Average, at best.

'Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List' attempts to walk the right lines, but ultimately falls into a clichéd, predictable friendship tiff story.

Victoria Justice and Pierson Fodé are fine in their respective roles, though I never got a sense of major chemistry between the two. Justice and Matthew Daddario suited each other well, mind.

The main premise is pretty obvious, there's a lot of overly clear plot devices and it as a whole features a lot of coincidences - almost one at every turn. That can be OK, just not with the aforementioned issue.

There's, I guess, a few respectable things it's trying to portray and tell, across different life scenarios - the most interesting is actually the stuff between Naomi and her mother, which I found fairly intriguing and feel they could've done more with.

Not a film I'll be revisiting any time soon.

Great book, Awful Movie
gracietaylor6 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a Disney channel-ifyed version of one of my favorite books. It seems like they filmed the first half of the novel and then realized they were out of time and just filmed the last scene. Naomi's redemption arc was almost entirely cut, which makes the movie awful. In the book, Naomi starts as an awful, unlikeable character and Ely as a spineless follower in the Cult of Naomi. Naomi was supposed to realize she was an awful person who uses others and learn from that. When Ely and Naomi make up at the end of the movie, they're still the same people as before only with a boyfriend(Ely) and a job(Naomi). Also, Ely is reduced to a stereotype of a partying gay 20-something, instead of being the driven multifaceted character he was in the novel. I understand cutting scenes for time, but the novel was thinner than my pinkie - you'd think someone would figure out how to keep the important scenes.

Great movie
wwwyourmomma21 September 2015
Really loved this concept. Really relevant to today. Being in love with your best friend. Yeah we have all experienced that haha. Great acting from Victoria. Director did an amazing job. Really loved this. Worth my money. Loved the comedy and romance and raw feeling you get when watching the movie. Great movie for teenagers and adults to watch. We have all (well most of us) had a best friend like Naomi and Ely had. All in all this is a really good coming of age story and LGBT movie. Great to watch with your friends. Not sure if you would watch with your family do to the make up scenes but to each there own I suppose. Definitely worth checking out if your into movies like this.

Privileged white kids cannot work their self-made problems
Impeckable26 November 2015
Vapid narcissists Ely and Naomi maintain a toxic friendship where they are co-dependant and yet not honest to each other. An affair between their parents (which ended in a divorce and a barely-together-marriage) has not broken their bonds, even though they harbour unspoken resentment toward each other -- made worse by their ill-advised pact to never date boys they both find attractive.

Perhaps we'd feel concern for them if they weren't both so self-absorbed and actually wanted the best for each other. Nope, Naomi would rather Ely conform to her fantasy relationship with him where he is not gay and he gives her the love she lacks from her father -- and Ely would rather not call out Naomi on her disregard for her other friends and current boyfriends, or even call her out on being a bad college student for that matter.

What happens doesn't even matter -- like most kids they'll realise that they created most of these problems themselves, and that other people actually have REAL PROBLEMS and maybe they should actually get a hobby or something.

If this in any way resembles your life, SEE A THERAPIST ASAP. The characters in this movie are not real, and if they were, everyone would hate them, because they are horrible. Gain some perspective and watch the news or read a book. Just don't be Naomi or Ely. They suck.

No Kiss List is an attempt of a modern kind of romance
maansg1922 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
No Kiss List is an attempt of a modern kind of romance , It's a unique in its script, plus has awesome stars in it and i heart Victoria justice she is surely an inspiration,Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist became something of silent sleeper hit, garnering a decent following, nothing game-changing, but definitely not a flop..the mare characters have far too close of a relationship to be your average best friends. They've lived next door to each other all their lives, spend all of their free time together, and snuggle up to each other in the same bed at night. They're practically a couple who have no friends outside of each other, and this comes off as extremely unhealthy...my only wish is to get the autographed poster of the no kiss list by the way the movies is way better then the book, i am extremely happy of the out come, love you guys and peace out :P :)

Immature girl-child millennial in student film-makers crappy capstone project
bootlesscries27 September 2015
Story: Terrible book gets turned into a (guess what) terrible movie. Noami leads a life of no responsibility in work, school, and home life. The entire premise of the movie, the "no kiss list" is an excuse for Naomi to keep Ely to herself by denying both of them any chance of finding love with a person of their own choosing.

Filmmaking: Train-wreck. The film could have been 15 minutes long if all the pop-music- montages were cut out. The DP favored super wide angle lenses without knowing how to use them (hand-held and panning with wide angles creates a nauseating effect on the edges of the frame). 95% of the film was hand-held for no apparent reason.

Perhaps 13 year old girls will enjoy this movie with the hope that they can be utterly annoying and useless for the rest of their lives.

Great Movie (PG-13)
kntthouston13 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This movie features characters that are oddly enjoyable to relate to .It isn't a boring movie ,so great if you just want to have a good laugh or re-analyze what teens and young adults are like in this age . The setting of New York City really adds character to the movie ,especially with its theme about homo and heterosexuality . These actors have a filmography record that really shows the watcher variations of their acting styles. Yes this movie seems like it may not end well ,but it does . THey both get the guy :) They both are still friends and life universals are revealed . Pretty helpful (as a movie can get) for preparation and revitalization if you're a teen or an adult nowadays.

This is on my no kiss list, I'd rather kiss my dog than watch this again.
Boristhemoggy5 August 2016
Victoria Justice isn't beautiful, she's cute and pretty in a childish way so let's get that in there straight away. She spends most of her time in the movie trying to pull cute faces so you will be attracted to her cuteness. And of course it works but that doesn't take away from the awful dialogue and silly story. If you're 14 and exploring love and relationships for the first time then you may find this an amusing film in a faux hipster way, but it does not reflect real life and real relationships so if you do watch it don't ever think that this is how real people act. They don't. Unless they're 14. The acting is actually not bad, but the story, the cute girl and the handsome boys aren't enough to carry this movie through. It's good background noise if you're a teen alone with a date and wanting to get to first base.

Modern day coming of age film!
katherinemg20 September 2015
I watched this movie with my family because my daughter is a big Victoria Justice fan. I thought I was going to have suffer through another mediocre high school themed movie but was pleasantly surprised. My 18 year old son and my husband were both emotional at the end. It teaches some really good life lessons and I highly recommend for kids 13 years of age and older. Having lived in NYC at different times in my life, it was wonderful to see the familiar landmarks throughout the film. Both my teenagers loved the movie and as I mentioned my husband was moved as well. I think this movie is a great conversation starter with teen aged kids!

One of the greatest romantic comedies
lama_smarty21 September 2015
The movie is extravagant. It's a unique and fresh idea. I loved seeing the friendship chemistry between Naomi and Ely. It'll make you laugh your ribs off. The great thing about the movie is it's sending a message to the viewers that there is no problem with being gay and you can't change a person who's gay. The characters are all so different but they surely will leave an impression on you. Victoria Justice shares this unique bond with everyone in the movie. Pierson portrayed the role really well. But be prepared to see hotness on screen. I really recommend it to teenagers but people who aren't teens can watch it too.

Annoying cliché chick
jimbob-969614 December 2015
The character of Naomi is so self centered. Clingy, whiny, attention craving. When bad things happen to her, you want to pause it, invite the neighbours in, dance around the TV letting off party poppers, shouting "Whoop whoop" She's an awful character, wouldn't be out of place in'Gossip Girl' Horrible character. I stuck with it because Ely and Alex are hot. Okay, apart from that, I associated with Ely's perspective. You can't help where the heart leads you. Annoying and, 'what's that about' having two sets of characters with the same name, even a boy and girl. I would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't been for enduring Naomi.

Just plain abysmal
cb22930 November 2015
This movie was so far beyond bad I can't even find any amusement from making fun of it. The titular Naomi is one of the most annoying characters ever committed to screen. Vapid, self-absorbed, lazy, irresponsible and mean-spirited. And then she's somehow surprised when her life goes to "ruins". And I use that term lightly considering she doesn't actually have any REAL problems to speak of. Just petty drama worthy of junior high brats. And the character is made all the more obnoxious by having some random, horrid actress cast in the role. Wouldn't be surprised if they fished her out of the dregs of the Disney channel....

Ely at least has some redeemable qualities. But he's spineless and refuses to stand up for himself as Naomi continuously walks all over him to make herself feel better about her sorry life. Their entire relationship is toxic. The co-dependency is borderline pathologic.

In short, the only people who could possibly enjoy this drivel are thirteen year old girls who want to have their pathetic lifestyles reaffirmed. Or grown adults who are thirteen year old girls at heart and refuse to grow up and join the real world.

Fascinating insight into life
ali-girl-625-20865926 November 2015
As a fellow first year university student, I saw Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List as something I could relate to as I was that age, and that their friendships and relationships would be something I would aspire to. I originally looked at this film and thought it would be a cheesy friendship film where they went through struggles trying to adjust with the 'real world', ultimately ending up at the same place as they were at the start: and it was. But it was so much more!

The film went through many issues that we face, as budding adults, and what we have to learn to hold on to and let go of. It breaks the illusions of fantasies, and the idea that we all stay at the same stage throughout our lives. Ultimately, it was a very good and surprisingly emotional film that made me evaluate my life, something any good film should do.

For younger crowd
diva300018 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Saw it as part of Outfest 2015. Definitely a good film for younger women in love with gay men. As an older gay man, I was inpatient with the story. Found it predictable. Naomi is immature and annoying. Didn't see the point of the No Kiss List considering their relationships at the beginning.

I found it difficult to understand the actors at beginning. Don't know why, whether the sound wasn't good, the music too much, or they mumbled. Got better. Didn't believe them as college age. The guys are hot but there is only a little skin. And the actors playing them are straight which ruins any fantasy I might have had. My best girlfriend saw it with me. She hated it more than I did.

Good times!
krolabm22 September 2015
I loved the movie. It was funny and also soothing for a nice relaxing afternoon. I think that this is a great story about friendship and love, also about growing old and changing. Not all change is bad and the movie handles very well the idea that not all relationships are perfect, not even between best friends.

The cast is great, relatable and have great chemistry, therefore the characters feel real and not forced into the plot. Bruce 1 per example is a magnificent secondary character who brings a lot of comedic elements and also funny scenes.

Above all, you can get lost in the movie and be happy for a bit over an hour, forget about your problems and have fun.

Doesn't exactly know what it wants to be
abercrombienina9 June 2018
Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List isn't your typical teen drama-comedy, and that's not a good thing. What makes teen dramadies so appealing is that even though they're cliched, they're charming in a cheesy way. Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List does not come across as charming though, it just comes across as confused. It doesn't fall anywhere. I don't really know the target demographic for this movie. The movie talks about sex and mentions d*cks and pretty "adult" things that shouldn't be targeted to preteens and young teens, but it doesn't really seem to be targeted to older teenagers either. I can't see an 18 year old enjoying this film. This movie doesn't know how to correctly illustrate how an 18 year old really acts. These young adults are shown doing pretty adult things like partying and having hookups and what not, but they argue over trivial things and go on and on about fake deep philosophies as they desperately try to seem "woke". I suppose teenagers tend to be fake deep, but a lot of teenagers are also self aware. The two main characters, Naomi especially, aren't. Naomi's character is dreadful. She is arrogant, selfish, and childish. She tries so hard to be "hard" and even though she learns and "grows" (if you can even call what happened growth), she still rubs me the wrong way. Ely's a bit better and has more sense, but he's pretty bland on his own. The ending and the so called "character development" doesn't seem deserved.

It could have been worse
seronjaa-797-31312413 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Based on the reviews on Netflix, I thought it would be a barely watchable movie. And, the first 10 minutes of it were critical for me. If you can go through them, then you can watch the whole thing. It starts out in a sugar coated cheesy obnoxious teenage la-la-land. The main characters are young hipsters in NYC who do everything you hate about such people and who fulfill all your stereotypes about gay people and snobby arrogant teens. But then at least there is a story line and some sort of message, they're trying to show as obvious as possible. The dialogue was very bad, the acting of the Naomi girl wasn't that good either. And I guess most people just watched it because of all the hot boys. It's horrible if they have to explain you in the movie everything that it should be about and trying to be deep by showing you shallow people with their shallow little lives and 1st world problems. It's like showing you a vase with dead wilted flowers and telling you how beautiful and alive those flowers are and repeating it for 90 minutes. Maybe you will buy it, but probably not. I'm glad I don't know any person in my life, who is like Naomi. So, the movie is OK for teenage girls and people who are really bored (which I was), but hopefully I will forget about it as fast as I forget about any mediocre movie these days. It's not as bad as Twilight, but it's not even close to some real movies. And, if you want to see a really good movie about teenagers and their love problems, go watch "Teenage dirtbag". It's one of my favourites and has a beautiful story and well made characters and dialogues.

If it was physically possible to scoop your brain out from your hollowed eye sockets and put it in a blender I would, just to wipe this movie from my brain.
sandrews-6564018 August 2018
IMDb asked me if this review contained spoilers and I would check yes but this movie is more predictable and plot less than I thought possible. I really wish that it was possible to give a movie zero stars on this site. It is no wonder that Victoria Justice is more obsolete than a game boy. not to mention the lack of character introductions and explanations. This was a seriously horrendous movie. DO NOT WATCH!!

Fun, entertaining movie about love, friendship and growing up
katelyn-perkins-103 August 2015
No Kiss List isn't just another romantic comedy. It's much more complex than that with themes of love, yes, but also complicated friendships, maturation and family dynamics. Victoria Justice is relatable and likable as Naomi, and Pierson Fodé as Ely feels like a guy you would want as your gay best friend. My favorite character was Bruce 1. When I saw the movie at Outfest LA, the theatre was rolling in laughter at his hilarious comments and undying love for Naomi. In addition to laughter, there were sweet and sad parts of the movie that made me tear up a little. Overall, No Kiss List is entertaining, funny, heart-warming and also a little dramatic at times. Definitely recommend.

not good enough
PennyReviews6 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was hoping for a nice new age movie with some level of depth that can reveal the real characters behind the materialistic New York youngsters. Instead, what I've got was a film where the characters only like to repeat how beautiful and hot Naomi is. "People like you... You are so beautiful...etc etc" are some of the dialogues you'll hear and the rest of the movie doesn't really make up for the sallowness of the main protagonists. Naomi and Ely no kiss list only appears at the beginning of the movie and at the end. And that's it. Then it focuses of them partying, having fun, sharing lovers, fighting and of course, changing their lives and become, wait for it, adults. Finally, the performances are not that great and so I'll give this movie 2 out of 10.

Great for teens
sendmejunk-nie26 March 2016
I went in wanting to assess Matthew Daddario's acting so I had little to no expectations.

It's a nice little movie with a good pace, great music and excellent costumes.

Victoria's acting did nothing for me. At no point in the movie did I feel her despair, excitement or any other emotion she was apparently experiencing. Pierson was amazing, touching, sensitive and sensible. Sadly, Victoria was giving him so little material to work with, he often came out too strong and overtly emotional. Still, an actor I will watch out for.

So I went in for him but he was the biggest disappointment. I found he played his character the same way he plays Alec in Shadowhunters. Huge bummer... While in Shadowhunters it works great with the book character as it brings him a more complete personality - except for the occasional out of character lines - it worked even better here as Gabriel. The two characters are so blurred, now I will see Gabriel every time I watch Alec. That being said, great chemistry between Gabriel and Naomi, Naomi and Ely but nothing between Ely and Bruce 2.

Overall, it's an OK movie that 16 years old girls should enjoy. I would recommend it to them.

miss-vanessa-doe4 October 2020
I really don't write reviews anymore but i can not hold back this time: It turned out to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The female leads' portrayal of her character was so unlikable and the whole execution of the movie was just dull. I've seen better films made by students, i don't even know how this one made it on Netflix.
