A very good episode.

Alfred works on his father's farm, but is a drunk and a waster, who bullies and taunts the local GP, Doctor Crawford, Alfred is found dead, and all fingers point to Crawford as the killer.

The Grim reaper did indeed come to town in this darker episode which saw its fair share of blood and death. Hilarious scenes with Mrs McCarthy in her eye patch, I love the look on the faces of Sid and Father Brown when they're sat on a bench with her, the humour was a welcome addition to this grizzly tale.

James Fleet was excellent as Doctor Crawford. The wonderful David Troughton isn't given enough screen time.

A very good episode 8/10

Not a review, correcting someone's incorrect "Goof".

Teased hair was very much in before the 80's. My neighbor was a part time hair dresser in the mid 60's and her hair and her customers' hair was often teased up into "beehive" and like styles. Check out any Annette Funicello beach party movie!

Warning: Spoilers
This was again not my favourite episode but it was still a good one nonetheless. The mystery was good and surprisingly despite a confession to the murder, he murder turned out not to be a murder at all.

Tender drama and concern for others

This episode is a story about Alfred a farmers son who is turning into a spiteful mean man. His father picks on him and does not want him to die like his mother, an with substance abuse.

The local doctor is married to a younger woman. They have no children. When she tries to tell her husband she is pregnant there is always some other thing that interferes with her telling him.

Alfred is a flirt with the doctors wife and wants drugs from the doctor saying he has a bad headache.

At some point the doctor delivers the drugs and Father Brown goes to the farm and finds Alfred dead and stuck in a hay crusher.

Poison pen letters go out saying the doctor did it. Alfred's father believes the doctor did it and so does the doctors wife. The doctor confesses to killing Alfred.

Father Brown talks to people and makes them admit they wanted to believe it was the doctor because they did not like him.

At the end you will find out how Alfred died and what people are willing to do and say to save their loved ones from pain.

In this episode Father Brown is left with no obvious suspects but he knows the accused is innocent.

Farmer John Tatton is a bitter man. His son Alfred is even worse, a drunk and he always makes a play for the local doctor's much younger wife, Oona.

When Alfred's mangled body is found inside some farm machinery, Inspector Sullivan has no hesitation in arresting Doctor Crawford especially when some anonymous letters are discovered which suggest that Oona was having an affair with Alfred.

Interestingly Father Brown is bound by the The seal of the confessional when the accused tells him that he is not the murderer but he would still rather be hung.

The Exterminator

Warning: Spoilers
The death of Albert in this second season episode, The Grim Reaper, reminded me of the infamous death scene from The Exterminator with the meat grinder. Anyway, Father Brown manages to solve the crime and there's lots going on.

Charles Armstrong plays the Clerk of the Court, and it's a shame he didn't get a larger role. Lady Felicia didn't appear (and I wonder if the regular cast get paid if they don't appear in an episode).

What else, well I'm enjoying catching on the Father Brown early years episodes. If in the future Father Brown is rebooted then I nominate Chuck Norris to play Father Brown.
