Sonic Boom is a Sonic Bust
arorashadow_200314 November 2014
*This review is based entirely on the Wii U* Sonic Boom has roared onto the Wii U and 3DS for this fall complete with a TV Series to tie in. While the TV series proves to be entertaining Sonic Boom on the Wii U proves to be an overall frustrating Sonic game in the latest of a long string of flops for the ever struggling franchise.

"Rise of Lyric" is the first produced effort by newcomer Big Red Button founded by veteran game makers from the studio Naughty Dog. As their first run out the gate is a near marginal failure.

In Sega's attempt to spin off Sonic in a separate direction we're treated to a sling of character redesigns from Yuji Uekawa's character designs from the earlier 3D titles. These new designs aren't bad so much as how they are used in the game. The game's graphics are pretty primitive for a next gen console, while the Wii U is given flak for being comparably underpowered compared to PS4 or Xbox it shouldn't matter as Sonic Team has proved before you can push a marginally underpowered console to full potential we saw this in the Sonic Storybook games for the Nintendo Wii before it.

The game suffers from terrible lag and constant frame rate issues. Even though Sonic Generations had frame rate issues too they suddenly don't look half as bad compared to Rise of Lyric. This is especially frustrating when you are surrounded by a host of enemies or on a long stretch of running.

Speaking of running, Sonic does very little of running in this game, as mostly he moves at a very leisurely jog. Speed sections are limited to long stretches of track that don't offer anything interesting except the occasional side path. Speed sections are few and far between as most of the time you'll be exploring the over sized hub worlds. This Sonic game tries to incorporate elements of modern platformers not typically seen in a Sonic game with a large hub world and side quests These large worlds are horribly confusing due to the bland design of them and the lack of any kind of map, quest system or just simple hint bubbles. When given an objective by an NPC it's your job to eventually find where you need to go.

The stages themselves are incredibly platform heavy but most of the time I can't tell whether I'm in a stage or just another hub area because the transitions are so choppy and there are no title cards indicating you are in a stage. No creative names like Speed Highway or City Escape before it, you're just suddenly in a new area with no explanation.

The platforming sections aren't terrible, after all Sonic was born as a platforming and speed oriented game and I've actually missed some of the platforming aspects in recent games, however like games since Sonic Unleashed most of the stage platforming is a 2.5D perspective instead of a full 3D experience.

Rise of Lyric does have a nifty aspect of rotating you through the roster of characters, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy in a similar style to Sonic Heroes before it. This is an aspect I did find enjoyable for the most part. The AI can be really stupid at times the as they won't help you in combat but stand around like an idiot. There's also a shoehorned in vehicle section where you float on a river in a hovercraft. Guess they missed the memo that nobody liked the vehicles in Shadow the Hedgehog or Sonic the Hedgehog 2006.

The story isn't really much, it's a retread of the Monster of the Week scenario but there is surprisingly no effort into developing this whole new universe BRB is trying to establish. Perhaps they want you to watch the TV series but the series episodes are only 11 minutes long so don't count on development there. Perhaps they want you to read the tie in comics by Archie instead. Though Sonic has never been the best with storytelling anyway so it's not a big deal. I gotta say I do like the overly cheesy jokes and snarky charm of Sonic. It takes me back to my childhood days of watching Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog which was filled with those quips. Shadow the Hedgehog and Metal Sonic appear in this game but I think they were added as afterthoughts as they appear once and disappear for the rest of the game and their designs aren't terribly different either.

The music is perhaps the worst in this game. Sonic has always had great music but Richard Jacques writes music that might befit a Sonic movie but is forgettable in a video game. No rock or rap tunes to be found just a cinematic sweeping orchestral score that's not very good anyway.

I've compared Sonic Boom to a lot of previous games because well that's what it does, it rehashes a lot of old ideas from older games only badly. 2.5D platforming and combat styles from Sonic Unleashed, rail track running in the Sonic Storybook games, the team-up mechanic seen in Sonic Heroes and random vehicles from Shadow and Sonic '06. This game is not nearly as bad as the botched Sonic '06 but it shows Sega needs to stop trying to reinvent the wheel and make a decent game in the vein of the classics or the Adventure games. This game is not worth the $50 I paid for it and I don't have any confidence in the 3DS game either.

unfinished

I'm actually embarrassed for Sega and sonic team. Out of all the terrible games they have pumped out, this is the worst of the lot. Its quite simply not finished. They got lazy on the cut-scenes, meaning that there are graphical errors and lighting errors everywhere. And may I mention that knuckles glitch that allows you to basically finish the game with no effort at all. The character redesigns are horrible, and there is no real likable features about the characters. The plot is incredibly shallow, and there are signs that the writers tried to add too much humour to the game, making it less funny in the process. In summary, this game costs $60. Need I say more? What happened to you sonic team? You used to be cool.

A rushed mess with nothing to show for it.
Channeleven16 March 2015
When this game was originally slated for release, many Sonic fans (or more specifically, fans of the Sonic cartoon it was based off of) were ecstatic over it. I'll admit, I didn't have to many qualms over this game when it was being promoted. However, the developers claimed that they'd release it earlier than intended, which set off a major warning light for anyone not following the Boom hype.

Needless to say, their move bombed as severely as expected, and I mean as severe as Sonic 06. Only difference is that this game is actually WORSE than Sonic 06.

Graphics

The game suffers from PS2 grade graphics (which, considering what system this was released for is highly unacceptable.), choppy frame-rates, which really complicate the game during speed sections, especially when it comes to avoiding obstacles, and some glitches here and there. The most notable one being the Knuckles glitch which could be used to skip portions of the game.

Sound/Music

A saving grace for any Sonic game, even the bad ones mind you, is the soundtrack. Sonic 06 dominated in this category with music in a variety of genres. No such compliment could be given to Boom though, for it utilizes a generic and forgettable orchestra soundtrack. The sound effects are also very generic.

Acting

The acting is surprisingly abysmal. Many of the voices (save for Eggman) sound plain and stiff. The humor and dialogue is also nothing to go by. Every five seconds or so, each character states the obvious (such as their love for running and rings or when they jump on a bounce pad) or spewing out some of the crappiest jokes imaginable.

Story

The story deals with Sonic and co. fighting Eggman and accidentally freeing an ancient robotic snake known as Lyric, while attempting to hide from Metal Sonic. The rest of the plot deals with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy trying to stop him. Far too simple.

Gameplay

The gameplay consists of speed stages, and, throughout the entire game, boring combat stages that might as well be button mashers. It's about as lackluster as The Simpsons Wrestling.

Overall

This game is a pointless mess that has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. While games like Sonic 06 actually provide some comedic value with its flaws (along with some agreeable pros), this game is just bad in almost every way possible. Don't even bother.

Hands down The Worst Sonic Game ever
fsimpson-2343926 February 2017
Where to start

Graphics: This looks like it was made for a PS2 game

Gameplay: Sluggish and speed sections reduce frame rate

Soundtrack: Sonic 06's Avior was it's amazing soundtrack. This soundtrack is awful

Development: The TV show this is based on is actually good. But this game wasn't made by SEGA. Rather made by a company called BigRedButton, made up of former Naughty Dog employees

Reception: Fans hate it so much they find it worse than Sonic 06. 32% was what Sonic Boom got. 47% is what Sonic 06 got.

I feel sorry for Sonic. SEGA just don't know what to do with him. Hopefully Sonic 2017 and Sonic Mania will be good and this game will be forgotten.

Boring, Horrible, and Forgetful
jackass-2663426 January 2020
Good lord, this "game" is even worse Superman 64, and that's saying a lot. Compared to that, Rise of Lyric has no logical reason to come back to playing, when it's more fun to stare at the wall than play this garbage. Crappy combat, boring as hell gameplay, ugly character art and graphics, and god awful voice acting.

The Biggest Waste Of Time Ever In Video Gaming History
yolibarvueswag4 August 2020
I can't believe there's a game worse than Superman 64, and possibly Fallout 76. Rise of Lyric is undoubtedly the worst Sonic game ever. Horrible, rushed, "weak", and lazy, combat, bland and uninspired level designs, bad writing, and outdated, PS2 or Wii Graphics. The game is essentially trying to copy the Lego Video Games, with a major focus on exploration, combat, and progression, but the difference is that The Lego games are actually fun, and have tons of secrets and replay value. The combat is just mashing one button, with ZERO combos, or rewards. It gets old real fast. The only argument I don't agree with is that people say there's too many bugs and glitches, but I've never ran into any when I played it. That's the only part I think where people exaggerate on, but everything else is trash. The only "bug" I've come across was the bad camera and sometimes clipping. Seriously though, the graphics look like Wind Waker on GameCube but slightly more brighter, but WAY worse, especially considering the time of release and gap between the two.

The walking parts are the absolute worst part of the game. You move so darn slow, it kinda makes me question if the people who made this game even played and understood a Sonic game. God, Rise of Lyric makes Sonic '06 look like a masterpiece. However, at least they tried with '06, and it was because the team split up, as well as being rushed. '06 has better, gameplay (minus the glitches), better graphics, and WAY better music. While the voice acting was more stiff, it was a lot was a lot easier to listen to. The only bad thing about '06 for me besides the buggy and incomplete gameplay is the long loading times. Oh, another thing, '06 has almost perfect frame rate, while Rise of Lyric has trash frame rate.

I think SEGA was getting a bit greedy with their deal with Nintendo, because all we got a mediocre platforming game, a cash grab Olympic crossover (god, I hate that series), and a hot piece of trash spin off. So apparently the people who worked on this were former Naughty Dog employees, but I think they've should've stayed there, considering they wasted so much of their spare time on this trash. I understand why SEGA didn't just ask Naughty Dog, because they're owned by Sony as of 2001, and the Nintendo deal, but I feel SEGA just gets WAY too greedy and ambitious with their toys, and while there's the TV Show, I've barely watched it, it was meh. But Rise of Lyric was trash.

Say 'hi' to rock bottom, Sega.
troy-daniel-bush16 March 2021
The only thing I like is Metal Sonic. He looked cool. And he was always my favorite Sonic villain.

The characters are annoying. The voice acting is atrocious. I personally hate Roger Craig Smith's Sonic. He makes him sound like a complete d-bag. And this iteration of Sonic is a d-bag. It's ugly. The glitches are embarrassing. And it wouldn't have made a difference if the developers had finished the game because line of dialogue is undeniable unbridled cringe. The dialogue in "The Last Airbender" was less groan-worthy. Plus, the story is weak, the environments are uninspired, and the game had no idea what it wanted to be. First you're running, then it's open world, and then it's solving puzzles! Someone seriously thought they could charge $60 for this upon release? I'm insulted by this.

Severely underrated
rpfyztkh6 April 2024
It's an awesome sonic game deserved to be played by all. I loved the characters of the boom franchise the story and the gameplay styles as well as al characters being playable. It's a fun and enjoying adventure and deserves many good reviews. The story is awesome and on par with the boom franchise which I love and hope it continues soon with a third season.i hope many will see the potential of this game and its amazing cutscenes that are identical to watching full life episodes of the sonic boom series in terms of quality and animation. Also, those who like uncharted, Indiana Jones will probably like it a lot too. The characters are all very likable and friendly with each having unique abilities. It's a different sonic game but it is in the right direction for a spin off.

I can not believe that the latest game has been the worst game of all the Sonic games !!
Leasebergfladstad20 November 2014
I am very disappointed! I had expected that the game would get good score and do not understand why the game was the worst of all Sonic games! Is it just because the characters have new style, it's a new universe to explore and solve puzzles in a jungle unlike the previous games? I really like the new game, I looked through the entire game on "Youtube", I really like their characters new style and the new universe that you can explore and resolve Tasks in a jungle, I think that game really deserves to get more than 2.7 score in IMDb!

I tried to read why it was the worst Sonic game, but I did not understand it, something that Sega would send some copies of the game to do. The game is just a glitch and is not the only Sonic game that has a glitch and what is wrong with the universe that you can explore and solve puzzles, it is the speed with too, but not about beating the record to get the earliest possible.

How could the game be bad if the TV series has been very good score in IMDb?!, TV series every fall now got 7.8 score in IMDb. I hope it will get more score and no less than that!

Undervalued

This is a good Sonic Game and i have a few reasons 1. Tails Amy and Knuckles are playable and useful 2. The return of Metal Sonic as a villian 3. The redesings aren't too bad (except Knuckles) And 4. The biggest bugs or at least most were fixed.
