- Ryan and Mike get closer to finding the mole. Joe plans to reveal to the world that he is in fact alive.
- Max does an analysis of female agents who might be the leak and one of them is Gina Mendez, in charge of the search for Joe Carroll. Ryan doesn't believe it but it seems that Gina accessed Agent Debra Parker's email at least 6 times in the last year. When Ryan confronts her, Gina denies being the leak but she knows who it might and unknowingly leads them to Jana Murphy, Joe's acolyte. Meanwhile, Joe continues to feed Micah's fantasies and eliminates perhaps the greatest roadblock to taking over the cult. Joe decides it's time to let the world know he is still alive and sends Emma and Robert to New York City with a message for journalist Carrie Cooke.—garykmcd
- At the Korman compound, Micah and Joe watch Carrie Cooke on a TV news show. Micah points out that Carrie is making a fortune off Joe.
Carrie talks about Lily Gray, saying her psychopathy is much more complicated than Joe's. Micah gets inspired, and announces he wants to make a splash like Lily has. Joe asks to make a call.
He calls Jana, the former FBI agent.
Later, on the street, in return for talking about Lily and not Joe, Carrie pumps Ryan Hardy for information. He tells her where her torturer Dr. Strass is being held and promises to let her know when he learns anything about Joe. She invites him to dinner for saving her life, but he declines, wary she's working an angle.
Back at Ryan's apartment, Max lets herself in with coffee. Mike comes out of the shower in a towel. He gets a call from his mom and doesn't see Max until he's off the phone and dropping his towel. They have a brief awkward moment. She's been searching for the leak, and cross-referenced the female agents who had access to Joe's cases and came up with six women -- including Agent Gina Mendez. But, she cautions, there's a lot of room for error.
Micah struggles to make a video manifesto that Joe has written for him. Robert and Emma join them; he's sending them to New York as his emissaries. But, he announces he's also sending Lance -- a killer who has been in the hole for six months for slicing off a girl's ear because he didn't like the way she looked. When Micah leaves with Robert, Emma shares her concerns with Joe. "How crazy is he?" she asks. "Bipolar, delusional. I'm seeing strong signs of disassociative identity disorder. But what do I know? I'm not a doctor," Joe says.
She assures him she'll be fine in New York.
Back at Ryan's, he's skeptical that Mendez is the mole. Max mentions her personal life, including her ex-Jana, the former agent and current stay-at-home mom. They decide to try to prove Mendez is innocent.
Outside Mendez's apartment, a disguised Max bumps into her and plants a bug on her. Ryan stops Mendez and asks her why she accessed Debra Parker's email six times. Mendez denies it and tells him to go to hell.
After he leaves, she switches the sim card out of her phone and puts on her weapon, then leaves her car and hails a cab. Her paranoia makes Ryan think it means he was wrong about her and she is the mole.
At Korman, Emma brazenly kisses Joe in front of Robert -- and he objects to her timing. Joe gives her Micah's message as Micah brings Lance.
Gina takes the cab to Jana's. Jana is annoyed to her see her -- she has two friends over and wasn't expecting Gina, but Gina insists on talking to her alone.
At the cult, Joe finds Micah praying for guidance about what to do about Julia. "I killed my wife, so I'm probably not the best person to ask," Joe says.
Micah says he could never harm Julia, while sounding like he wouldn't mind if someone else did.
Gina finally gets Jana alone in their garage. She brings up Jana's "episode" after their youngest was born. Jana insists it was post partum depression, but Gina says they just called it that because of the Bureau -- it was a psychotic break, she killed the neighbor's dog. Gina can see the crazy in Jana's eyes and realizes she was using her security clearance and is helping Joe.
Jana suddenly stabs Gina twice in the stomach. As Gina lies on the garage floor, Jana takes her gun and goes back to join her guests.
Ryan and Mike pull up down the street.
Jana tells her guests that Gina is cooling off in the garage, then she runs upstairs to pack a bag with cash and weapons. Ryan and Mike ring the doorbell, and one of Jana's friends tells them Gina's in the garage.
With Jana upstairs, one of the friends shows Ryan to the garage. They find Gina bleeding on the floor, but alive. The friend calls an ambulance, while Ryan tells the other to take the kids outside.
Jana comes downstairs and sees Mike standing there. She points her gun at him, then Ryan joins them and aims at her, too.
Ryan asks where Joe is and Jana dissolves in front of them. She says she knows where Joe is, but the world is falling apart and it doesn't matter, nothing does. Then she blows her brains out in front of them.
Back at the cult, two of Micah's bodyguards bring Julia to him, dragging her by the arms. Julia tells him he's gone way beyond the bounds of their doctrine. Micah thinks Joe is a prophet. Julia doesn't think they kill people, they only honor the spirit, but he thinks they've killed. He tells her his faith has evolved and hers should, too.
She sees a gun on the table and contemplates it as she tells him she'll support him. Then she picks up the gun and fires it at him, but it's empty.
He says he had to test her faith. She sees Joe standing there and blames him. Then Joe garrotes her to death as Micah watches. "Thank you," Micah says.
With paramedics on the scene, Ryan talks to Mendez and warns her not to talk to anyone until the people Director Franklin is sending are there. After checking that her kids are OK, Gina apologizes to Ryan, saying she really thought Jana was OK.
Mike has copied Jana's computer and sent it to Max and swiped her cell phone.
Creepy Lance strolls into a bookstore in Manhattan, followed by Robert and Emma. They're there for a book signing by Carrie Cooke.
Back at Ryan's apartment, Max breaks through Jana's firewall and finds her search history full of Carrie Cooke. Ryan realizes she's being targeted. They find her book signing advertised online.
Mike calls the police while Ryan calls Carrie, but she's busy signing and he doesn't get through. Emma reaches the front of Carrie's line and Carrie recognizes her, but it's too late. Robert and Lance put on masks and start going through the crowd stabbing and slicing. Emma takes off her black wig and puts on a mask, the three of them corner Carrie, but she charges Emma.
Carrie punches Emma but Robert holds her down. Emma takes out a flash drive and gives it to Carrie, telling her to share it with the world or they'll come back and kill everyone she loves.
They hear sirens, but don't see Lance. Emma and Robert leave. As the police come in, Lance takes off his mask, changes and blends in as a victim.
Later, Mike and Ryan arrive. Carrie rushes to Ryan and hugs him. She says there were three attackers, but she only saw two, including Emma. Emma didn't say anything to her, but asks to call Ryan later.
Lance mills around the store with blood caked to his neck. When he tries to leave, an officer tells him he needs to stay. Ryan notices the blood goes under Lance's clothes, not over and pulls his gun just as Lance grabs an officer as a hostage. Ryan tells everyone to lower their weapons and that they need him alive, but the officer hostage fights back and gets free of Lance's weapon. Lance charges Ryan and another officer kills him.
Back at the compound, Robert and Emma debrief with Joe and Micah. Joe assures Micah he'll make history and they toast to immortality as Carrie comes on the TV.
Ryan, Max, and Mike watch.
Everyone watches as a masked figure appears on screen talking about resurrection. At the compound, Micah starts seizing and twitching. He collapses on the floor, twitching and foaming at the mouth as Joe, Emma and Robert watch Joe on TV: "In the coming days, more blood will be spilled and nowhere will be safe....You will never safe again. So prepare yourself, for this is the age of Joe Carroll, and my name will live forever."
Joe leans over Micah as he dies and mocks him with his own beliefs, telling him it's time to go home now.
Max tells Ryan not to be too hard on Carrie because Joe obviously threatened her. Mike gets a call and tells Ryan he'll talk to him tomorrow.
In Micah's cabin, Joe asks Robert if he understands what this means. He tells Robert to spread the "glorious" news. Joe tells Emma to stay close to Robert, adding "this might just work."
Mike gets into an official looking SUV.
At the cult, in front of the displayed corpses of Micah and Julia, Robert announces to the followers that they have been called home to lead the way. He introduces "the prophet Joe" and leads the crowd in chants of "Praise Joe!"
Carrie comes by Ryan's apartment -- he called her. She thinks he's mad, but he's not and understands she was threatened. He ordered takeout, they're having dinner.
The SUV brings Mike to a warehouse, where he shakes hands with someone he knows and willingly puts a black bag over his head and gets into another car.
After dinner, Ryan walks Carrie to the door. He's about to show her out, but changes his mind and kisses her instead.
In the morning, Mike finally reaches his destination -- escorted by the US Marshals service. His former FBI boss Marshall Turner is there to greet him as he arrives to see the person he's meeting: Claire, who is, apparently, not dead.
