- SYNOPSIS 1958. Young Abel Wolfaardt watches his parents argue over the puppy his father gave him earlier that day. His eyes well up and as the tears spill over, Abel hugs the puppy to his chest nearly strangling it.
1976. Now an adult and pretending to be Jaco Schoeman, Abel strangles his wheelchair-bound girlfriend, Ilse Winterbach.
Adriana Wolfaardt, a ballet teacher, concludes a class with her students and explains that the next weeks class will be suspended because she and her husband, Johan, will be visiting their farm in Duiwelslaagte. Adriana goes to see her husband at the hospital where he works. Johan dismisses their plans due to his busy work schedule. Adriana suggests that she goes to the farm on her own until Johan can meet her. Adriana also agrees to pick up Johans nephew, Frans, who will be joining them at the farm. Furious with Johan and fearful of the state of their marriage, Adriana seeks out comfort from her friend and fellow ballet teacher Elise. Adriana explains to Elise that this trip was meant to indicate whether she and Johan still have a future together.
At the bus stop, Adriana sees a man sitting in a wheelchair and having never met Johans nephew mistakes Abel for Frans. Abel eagerly plays along.
Meanwhile, Yuvanke Gersbach a journalist - investigates the murder of Ilse Winterbach. She suspects Ilses boyfriend of the murder, in addition the three other homicides (with a similar modus operandi) that took place recently. Yuvanke follows a lead to Duiwelslaagte.
Abel, still pretending to be Frans, builds on his relationship with Adriana over the weekend. Adriana confides in him, telling him of her love for dance and the miscarriage she had. He, in turn, shares his poetry and stories of army life with her. Their quiet bliss is interrupted by Yuvanke, who having visited several houses in the surrounding area, finally knocks on their door. Adriana invites her in and answers her questions but when Abel introduces himself as Frans, Yuvanke recognises him from a photo taken with Ilse and is anxious to leave. Yuvankes temperamental car, however, leaves her stranded at the house for the night. Adriana phones Elise to brag about the radio personality (Yuvanke) that will be staying in their house. She also confesses her feelings for Frans to Elise.
Yuvanke attempts to convey the truth to Adriana in secret but Adriana brushes off her warning. Yuvanke snoops around in Abels room and finds incriminating newspaper clippings among his belongings. Abel drugs Adriana and she passes out in bed. Yuvanke sneaks out to her car that night, only to find Abel waiting for her. Abel strangles her and hides her body. He stashes her car in the bushes. The next morning, Abel tells Adriana that Yuvanke left early.
The real Frans contacts Johan at his office and explains that their bus broke down. Johan, unnerved by Adrianas reassuring phone calls, calls the police to investigate. An officer goes to the farmhouse but leaves shortly after Abel and Adrianas warm reception. The officer calls Johan and explains that there is no departmental policy for infidelity. Incensed, Johan drives to the farm himself. Reports on Yuvankes disappearance are broadcasted on the radio.
Abel unplugs the telephone but Yuvankes car alarm goes off. He insists on investigating the noise himself but Adriana stumbles upon a disturbing poem he wrote and she begins to distance herself from him. Adriana wakes during the night and is consequently drawn to investigate when Yuvankes car alarm sounds off again. She finds Yuvankes car stowed away in the bushes.
Abel is waiting for her when she returns to the house and sensing that something had gone horribly awry, Adriana decides to call the police. Abel lunges at her and a game of cat and mouse ensues. Johan arrives and Abel attacks him. He ties Adriana and Johan to a chair.
Elise hears the report on the radio and contacts the police.
Abel tries to lure Adriana away from Johan. Adrianas bluff is ruined when Abel suggests that she kills Johan to prove her sincerity. Abel chains Johan to a windmill and leaves Adriana tied and gagged in Johans car. Adriana breaks free and runs him over. She rushes to the windmill but is too late to prevent the chain from suffocating Johan. Abel watches as she sobs over Johans limp body and then strangles her.
Abel drives off in Johans car and stops at the bus stop where the real Frans is waiting.
