The Prodigal Son
boblipton3 April 2021
Here's another of Lotte Reiniger's fabulous silhouette animations. Like many of her later works, it's a Bible story, covering the parable of the Prodigal Son. I always thought the obedient son got a bum deal, myself.

Is it worth looking at, you foolishly ask. Yes it is, you silly person. All of Miss Reiniger's works are wonderful. The use of silhouettes offers an intimate view of her subjects, a hint of spying on private events. That settled, let us mention her longtime collaborator, Freddie Phillips, who provides here, as always, a quiet, lovely, old-fashioned guitar accompaniment to the images. Like all good accompaniments, it ornaments without distracting from the events in the movie. Bravo!
