Hertbreaking return to the dreams, loves and innocence of old
xristoff9317 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I want to clarify that this rate and review are meant for the animαted series Ao Haru Ride, with the 12 episodes and 2 ovas, not the live action movie, which I have not and intend not to watch.

This is a story of two kids meeting each other in their middle school.Through simple and clear scenes we are given the very essence of teenage love,at a platonic level. You won't see anything too sexy here.Everything's in the eyes.Everything is so simple yet complicated, full of innocent and charming insecurity. The bonds are being formed through the simple act of caring.Nothing too complex, just people who listen to each other and even if their experiences differ, they try so hard to understand one another.

Personally,it took me back when I was still a lost kid, insecure, introvert and lonely. It reminded me of the sweet nervousness you feel when your crush is near. Not knowing what to say, afraid of been perceived as a potato all the time, wondering about every word or gesture,if they had a deeper meaning than what you just saw or heard.Your heart racing when your eyes meet and your voice wavers when you think about saying something to express some of your emotions...It was unbearably touching.

They were just so sweet and that feeltrip was heartbreaking. You mainly see the everyday lives of a group of teenagers, but among-st that simplicity you discover precious flowers, bloomed only for your soul's sake.It doesn't show anything about being in a real relationship. It is more like a flirtation-ship.They are at the stage that they care deeply for each other and while being too excited to be together,no one really openly admits it.You only get hints, that only get more and more obvious as the show progresses.

You sympathize, you can feel their fictional little hearts racing when their faces come too close....So close that you can smell the kiss, you can taste, just barely,it's magnificence at the end of their lips, and then they back away afraid or anxious about rejection...So painfully accurate.

I find myself many times thinking about these old happy and simple moments, when you felt most excited about someone and most wanted at the same time, while nothing really happens between the two,in the physical aspect at least. Not in a relationship nor becoming physical, but the period between the time you first felt that sting in your heart, that weird thing in your stomach,up to the point of the confession. All that excitement....It is the very definition of youth, fiery and limitless, yet tender and innocent.

You don't see a single kiss, but you get so much more and that's why you won't find yourself bored even for a second. You see the persistent Yoshioka,a young woman,so thoughtful and sincere,so sensitive and kind and outgoing and warm trying so desperately to find her way through to the heart of a distant and superficially cold but deep down kind male, named Tanaka.Watching them discover one another while,at the same time, they are discovering themselves is something you can literally fell in love with. His past is surrounded by mystery and pain, things that have changed and scared the once wide open and kind Kid.Now he is feeling empty, struggling between the lessons learned from his pain and his feelings for his friends and mostly for the girl that entered his life like a storm, trying to break down his doors of secludement, freeing him from fear, guilt and restraint.

But what of an ending was that!??I really wish we get a season 2,even though from what I've read it's highly unlikely. One thing I did not like,is the emphasis given on the orange hair young man.Yoshioka had an accident, she fell down,he was walking next to her and she dragged him down to the floor with her.During their landing she touched his private parts. At first I thought it was another typical clumsiness incident,a thing for her friends to make fun of,a thing to make her face red,in order to give a good laugh. But the way they kept showing him in the last episode again again made me realize that this was not random thing.Usually these are hints implying something for the next episodes.Something bad for the couple to be.But since we got no continuation for this,we are left with nothing....or you go and read the manga I guess.

Anyway,it's an easy 8 out of 10 for me.I enjoyed it beyond expectation, bringing tears to my eyes and a bitter sting to my heart,an echo from a past long left forgotten.I did not like the end but it was not supposed to be THE end anyway, since the manga runs longer.Watch it,clear your minds and love it!

Disappointing second part
danisbelmm11 December 2020
I was really into it the first part of the anime. It's a cliche story but I don't mind it as long as it's well developed and has something unique to it. The first part intrigued me and was interesting and cute. After 7th and 8th episodes it got really inconsistent and I got annoyed with some of the characters and the ending was totally unsatisfactory.

I really thought I'd like this more but ending was disappointing

Adorable

Warning: Spoilers
We all had our grade school crushes. We remember how it felt to share a glance, a giggle, a moment with that one we adored. And we all remember how it felt when it ended. Now can you imagine meeting that person years later, in high school?

This is exactly what happens for Futaba and Ko Tanaka. After three years apart, they are reintroduced into each others lives again. Both of them will have to accept the ways in which they have changed since that year in the school yard. The show spends a good deal of time focusing on the character back story for these two characters in particular. We are shown what has happened, and why things are the way they are now. The question is, if Futaba or Ko will chose to remain the same or change.

This is a story about love, friendship, courage, and the trails and tribulations of life. As for why would I personally recommend it... Well, I think one thing we can all agree on is, in some capacity, we've wanted a do-over. As I've mentioned, the main characters are in love at a young age and they get separated. Young love, is the purest of all. I remember loving someone like that.

When they meet again, that love is still there. Ko has become guarded, and Futaba wants nothing more than to kick down his walls. For me personally, to think that the love I "set free" actually came back...It makes me yearn for that.

I recommend it because it resonates with my memories of youthful love, and it left me desiring a bond like (not only) the main characters have, but all of the characters in the show.

Love is so intense!
fluffset9 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I think the best genre to describe this anime is thriller-romance! Why? Because its so depressing to see how slow the female character named Futaba who doesn't even now that the hero here, Kou, the one she love is love her too. They do a lot of intense stuff like hugging and almost-kissing but she's still clueless. That's why I love this series because it have a reason, every reason for everything happen and you need to watch this to know. This series is not as popular as Kimi No Todoke which is awesome too even the pace is quite slow. If you want some intense love story, Ao Haru Ride or its English name Blue Spring Ride is the right choice. Story move fast and our heart simultaneously beating with the character. I hope it will be season 2 which is will be the final season I guess. If you like hardcore high school love story anime from japan along with its very sad soundtrack that can make you cry if you hear it. Give Ao Haru Ride a try, you will love it!

If you want life lessons, it's 8 on 10, but if you are seeking for youth, it's 5 out of 10....
jayeeta-9386828 January 2022
I really enjoyed till the very last episode as a good plot on life changing lessons. But for youth, love, affection it's not good enough. At least I thought there will be some chemistry between Futaba and Kou. But the author didn't touched the line. Even though Kou was concerned about Futaba but when he approached her in a sarcastic way at the same time Futaba tried so hard to catch up and Kou has successfully disappointed her every time. But yeah overall the plot is kinda nice for life changing experiences.

Very cute romantic anime!
Irishchatter7 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I really thought this anime was very breathtaking but very sad too at the same time. I loved how Ko and Futaba's realtionship started to blossom when they first met and this is while they were playing police and thief with their school friends! The scene where Kou and Futaba were huggin tightly near the lake was so wonderful, it really gave you a fuzzy feeling!

Although this anime was sad too in its parts. The reason why Kou had a change of personality when he came back to Futabas school, was the fact his parents divorced and his mother was very sick so she unfortunately passed away. You would feel gutted for Kou and his family like it can sadly happen to anyone as well in real life! It was sweet to see a shrine of her and I'm sure she is looking down at both her son's including Kous father!

I give this anime a 8/10 for its characters, storyline and anime <3

I really enjoyed it!
kvraaah30 July 2020
This anime is very short (12 episodes + 2 extras) and I binge-watched it in a day! It was very sweet and made my heart flutter nearly every episode. It was confusing at first but you soon get really into the story and I like how it feels very innocent. The main friendship group have an ideal friendship and it just made me happy to see. I might read the manga soon to continue the story as there's no second season. If you're interested in romance, I defenitely recommend trying out this show!

A good break from reality
sarat313 May 2022
It's cliche, but romance in general is a cliche.

Sometimes I got frustrated by the main characters's actions but I can't deny the fact that they truly care about each other.

You can't be good to others when you're not good to yourself. This sentence feels like chewed gum, but it's true. Once boy realizes that everything can be started over again, he changes his behavior towards everyone.

Anime doesn't have a proper ending, and because of that I can't rate it. It ended where (actually) everything seem to start.

I highly recommend to read manga.

I gave 9/10 to manga.

Sad But Happy??
schanzaysohail14 May 2021
I liked this anime a lot but i'm not sure why every episode made me feel like i was missing out and i felt super jealous because i wasn't Futaba... I liked Kou before Futaba changed him, like when he was cold and emotionless and didn't have much energy. That Kou was really cute and Yuuri annoys me a lot too i don't know why. Basically i don't hate the plot its fine i guess nothing to interesting but i have something against these characters and their development besides that the animes overall was very cute this is review is very different from my other reviews cause at this point i'm just hating on it but i would recommend all Shoujo watchers to watch this, its adorable and it only gets better... I don't plan on reading the manga cause its not That interesting, i think I've seen enough of this plot at this point either way very good anime :))

Super cheap and annoying
300Megahertz24 September 2020
Tanaka is super mean to Futaba without any reason. He is only nice when he feels like it, and even then he isn't sincere. He plays knight for her and issues hollow words of wisdom, only to avoid her again.

Futaba in turn cannot draw consequences and cannot defend herself.

Their backstory feels super engineered and cheap.

This anime draws every love drama cliche there is. But I quite like the art style.

A Captivating Tale of Young Love and Self-Discovery
ranadeavadhut4 July 2023
Blue Spring Ride, adapted from the manga of the same name, is a captivating anime that explores the complexities of young love and personal growth. With its endearing characters, heartfelt storytelling, and visually appealing animation, it delivers an emotionally resonant experience for viewers.

One of the strongest aspects of Blue Spring Ride lies in its characters. Protagonist Futaba Yoshioka is a relatable and multi-dimensional lead, navigating the challenges of her past while discovering her true self. Her growth throughout the series, as she learns to express her emotions and confront her vulnerabilities, is inspiring. The supporting cast adds depth and variety to the narrative, each with their own unique struggles and motivations, contributing to the overall richness of the story.

The romance in Blue Spring Ride is beautifully portrayed, capturing the tumultuous nature of adolescent relationships. The central relationship between Futaba and Kou Mabuchi, the enigmatic male lead, is both heartwarming and bittersweet. Their journey from reconnecting after a long separation to navigating their complicated feelings is portrayed with sensitivity and authenticity. The series effectively explores themes of unrequited love, friendship, and the importance of communication in relationships.

Visually, Blue Spring Ride boasts appealing animation that complements the story's tone and emotions. The character designs are expressive, and the animation fluidly captures the characters' subtle gestures and facial expressions. The art style is vibrant and aesthetically pleasing, creating an inviting and immersive atmosphere.

The storytelling in Blue Spring Ride strikes a balance between lighthearted moments and emotional depth. It effectively delves into the characters' internal struggles and explores themes of self-discovery and personal growth. The pacing is generally well-executed, although some viewers may find certain episodes slower in comparison to others. Nevertheless, the overall narrative arc remains engaging and thought-provoking.

Despite its strengths, Blue Spring Ride does have a few minor shortcomings. Some plot points may feel predictable, adhering to common romantic tropes. Additionally, certain character arcs could have been further developed to provide a more comprehensive exploration of their individual stories.

In conclusion, Blue Spring Ride is a captivating anime that successfully captures the essence of young love and self-discovery. With its endearing characters, heartfelt storytelling, and visually appealing animation, it offers an emotionally resonant experience. While it may have a few predictable elements and missed opportunities for character development, the overall quality of the series is undeniably strong, warranting a solid 8/10 rating.

Please don't hesitate to watch
oyku_surer9 February 2022
Ahh my heart is still full of Ao Haru Ride even after 1 week. Hit me with the song and the scene in the first episode. Futaba and Kou are both amazing characters. The love between them is deep, warm and enjoyable. Futaba is impulsive person unlike most anime girl. She can touch and behave to Kou as she feels. Hers personality development and the problems (I couldn't find a proper expression) before development are believable. And Kou is gentleman and kind person in most aspect. This anime is in my Top 5 now. (Kamisama Hajimemashita, Yona of Down, Ao Haru Ride, Maid Sama, Fruit Basket and Bonus: Kimi Ni Todoke And Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii.)

Read the Manga :)
Mimi34213 May 2023
I've watched many rom-com animes over the years but Ao Haru Ride has always given a feeling that most don't. As a manga reader I can tell you now that you won't enjoy this as much if you don't move on to the manga.

The anime explores Futaba's unrequited love for Kou (this is a gradual realisation in a sort of hate/love way). Kou is a hard character to watch. We can't tell what he's feeling most of the time and for most of the show, he's non-chalant and uncaring about everything. So, we just have to watch Futaba push to learn more about him, little by little. But that's why it's so satisfying when he'd show gradual signs of opening up, especially with Futaba. She pushes him, not only to share his feelings with her, but also to value his relationships with others (i.e his brother and friends).

The anime ends with Kou appreciating and connecting with Futaba; but their relationship only slightly passes a platonic level. The manga is where things get interesting: SPOILERS AHEAD.

The manga reverses things. Kou is being revisited by his past, having to relive the trauma all over again, but this time in wanting to comfort Narumi, who had similarly experienced the passing of her parent. This put Kou and Futaba back to square one. After pushing so hard but being constantly blocked by Kou again, Futaba understandably decides to move on. Touma, a character briefly shown in the anime, falls for Futaba to which they eventually start dating.

Kou and Futaba at this stage have such intense romantic tension. With every glance they make, I feel a PULL on the heartstrings. Normally, I'd be rooting for Futaba to get over Kou and find comfort in new love, but somehow... it didn't seem right in this situation. Her relationship with Kou felt more natural to me compared to Touma and it was clear that Kou wasn't in the right state of mind at the time. The best part was watching Kou unmask and break in character after realising how depressed he'd been making himself, by blocking everyone again. He sees that with Futaba, he is undeniably happier but... a little too late. Having realised this, we now see HIM pursuing Futaba, which is wayyy out of character, and I love it. He gets to the point of making her uncomfortable by doing things for her which makes her feel conflicted. Even in the way he just LOOKS at her when she's with Touma or in general is PACKED WITH TENSION.

I love how slow but satisfying their love is formed, with both of them experiencing what its like to be on the other end of the spectrum. It makes the ending all the more genuine. Unlike other animes, especially current rom-coms, the relationship between these two seem more real with both of them having earned each others love by the end.
