Not much here but nicely affectionate and rambling, like the man himself I suppose
I'm no great fan but it does surprise me a little when I hear that people do not know the name Mr Scruff in the UK since to me I do hear his music often and even before I knew who he was, I had heard his tracks and they had stuck with me enough to recognise them once I heard them again. Since that time I have been to see him pretty much every time he comes to play the Hare & Hounds in Birmingham because his sets are generally very generous in terms of time with a great mix of styles but yet still remaining accessible to all. I particularly appreciate that the full sets are generally available for download for some time after a gig. So with this in mind I was interested to see this film even though it is now about 12 years old.
There isn't a huge amount here for the casual viewer looking to learn more about Mr Scruff and his music, instead this is a piece for those already fans. We follow Andy Carthy (aka Mr Scruff) through a few gigs – some good, some not. We hear about how unassuming he is, we hear from those attending his gigs what they like about him and in-between we hear some music and see some animation. In terms of this being a documentary it is pretty thin which is a shame since I would have liked it to capture his passions of music and other pursuits, even if they are tea and pie. Instead it is very laid back and not to fussed about nowt, which is a nice tone to the short film but not a really exciting one unless you are already engaged with the guy for what he does outside of this film.
So, for fans this will work and as time goes on is a nice throwback piece, but for casual viewers it is really better to jump into the music directly rather than watch this as it doesn't offer much to those not already in the know.
