Hold Your Breath Excitement

Any intelligent person would know that if the documentary was made, John Wildey must have survived, but for the whole 46 minutes I was spellbound wondering, was he severely injured, did he go down in some water, just pure 46 minutes of total adrenaline rush. Extremely highly recommended!

A Place You'll Never Be.

Warning: Spoilers
Kind of a neat documentary. Imagine yourself in passenger John Wildey's place, never having piloted an airplane, upstairs in a Cessna, returning to a small British airport at dusk, your friend piloting the airplane -- and your friend dies in his seat.

Night falls and Wildey is alone. He knows only the yoke (or control stick) and throttle but he can't see his instruments. Outside is black. It's hard enough to fly a small airplane in the daytime. Just to fly straight and level you need to keep the nose on the horizon and the two wing tips on their proper horizon. You need instruments to tell you your remaining fuel and your airspeed. And Wildey had none of these assets.

Fortunately he know how to use the radio and declares an emergency. Flight instructors rush to the field and begin speaking with him. An RAF search and rescue helicopter joins Wildey and flies beside him, piloted by a charming young woman.

Does Wildey panic? No. Of course he must be upset at the death of his friend in the next seat and unhappy about his own prospects of survival, but he's calm, formal, and occasionally cracks a small joke.

And with help from the field and from the helicopter, the unholy son of a gun manages to land the airplane at night. "Bless him," says the chopper pilot.
