A step in the right direction
KingProjector936 February 2015
With Season 2 discounted, Book of Circus basically picks up after the Jack the Ripper case in S1, and sees our favourite earl and demon butler team investigating a mysterious circus which may be tied to recent abductions of children, As it turns out, there is much tragedy, deceit and blood behind this 'greatest show on earth'....

A1 Pictures restored fan faith in their handling of the property with this really enjoyable, if a little questionable, 10 episode series. Like with S1, we have really dynamic and atmospheric animation and design work, a superb voice cast, and that same blend of fan-aware humour and intense horror-action that gives the show its unique appeal. However, the shorter episode count means we get a significantly more focused, and often more emotional, show over the meandering of the first, and then the straight up cluelessness of S2. Be it the circus' tragic backstory, the revolting fate of the missing children, or even Ciel having to revisit a horrible event from his past, I found myself often white knuckled and even holding back a gasp or two watching events unfold.

However, I did call the show 'questionable', but not in the tonally imbalanced manner of S1. Though we still go from horror to comedy, this series has more of an edge (probably from drawing more on the manga), so the issue doesn't lie there as much. Rather, it's more on principle: can I call this a proper 'series'or 'season'(technically being 3, though really it's more like 1.5)? Not simply because it draws on just one story for its entire, and short, runtime, but unlike most 'seasons', the status quo and what we learn about characters doesn't change much by the end, feeling more like just another day in the life of Ciel and Sebastian, and less like a major progression in their story or relationship. Now for fans, that's not such a bad thing, but it makes 'Book of Circus' feel more like a beefed up miniseries, an apology for S2, instead of a proper series of television with a clear beginning, middle and end that informs us about something new in who the cast are, opportunities for change, and what they now must do moving forward. In essence, Book of Circus feels more like it's part of a bigger season, instead a real, legitimate show itself. It's more how to open S3 than actually being S3, if you will.

Regardless, the same strengths from before apply, and fans will get exactly what they want out of this experience. In many ways, it surpasses S1, being more concise and tight, but in the end doesn't feel as meaningful or standalone as it should, thus putting it merely on par. Still a blast all the same!

An absolute masterpiece and the best thing to come out of Black Butler so far.

Warning: Spoilers
After season 2 disappointed a lot of people (despite it being just fine in my opinion), everyone thought Black Butler was dead. No one thought the show could return from such a disappointing season. But then something happened, Book Of Circus happened. This mini series (of 10 episodes) has a standard Black Butler plot that you would probably see in the first season. A travelling circus troupe has arrived in London and reports of kidnapped children have been happening ever since they arrived. So the queen sends Ciel and Sebastian over to investigate and find the lost children and return them home to their families. The show seems to take place somewhere after the reaper arc in season 1 which makes sense as that's how the order of the arcs happened in the manga. The series is a 10 episode long story arc with not a single filler episode and after Black Butler 2 all I can say is, THANK GOD. Sebastian and Ciel are still as likable as ever, Ciel is becoming more of an adorable dork and Sebastian's still as kickass as usual, but the antagonists of the series, the circus troupe, are very interesting and likable. Joker, Dagger, Doll, Beast, Peter, Wendy, Jumbo, and the rest all have tragic backstories as they all treat each other as family and had a painful time getting around when they were younger until the main antagonist adopts them and takes them in. You really have to watch it for yourself to see what I'm talking about, as this series actually put me close to tears. Despite it being disguised as a Sebastian and Ciel adventure in a travelling circus, it pulls at your heart strings when you aren't expecting. You wouldn't think you would care so much for the antagonists until you actually watch how they're lives have been via the flashbacks. The soundtrack as well is the best anime soundtrack I've ever heard. Black Butler has always been ace with it's soundtrack, especially during the openings and credits, but Book Of Circus just takes Black Butler 1 and 2's soundtracks and absolutely crushes them. The opening song, Enamel, is the best anime opening I've ever heard other than Shinzou Wa Sasageyo from Attack On Titan. The whole soundtrack is excellent. I really can't review this season properly because, you actually have to see it for yourself. It's a work of art. It takes our beloved Sebastian and Ciel and puts them in what's possibly their greatest adventure yet. If you don't believe this show will put you to tears then I dare you to watch it. Even if you don't cry, it's still absolutely beautiful, and another reason why Black Butler is my favourite anime of all time.

Staying true to manga really helps

The anime version of the Kuroshitsuji's circus arc really looks perfect. The story has been beautifully told. There was neither any dull moment nor did it feel rushed. It was darker and more psychological than the season 1 itself. The ending will surely have some impact on you or could make you think a bit. Almost each supporting or antagonistic character feels complete. You will also end up exploring more about Ciel and Sebastian.

If you are either going to follow manga or watch season 1, this one is totally recommended.

Top 1 Anime To Me
xnryhngkq1 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I've seen all of black butler and and 5 years later I can proudly say it's still my number one favourite anime. It's definitely an anime that kept me entertained and on the edge of my seat. I would definitely not recommend any of black butler to anyone that's under highschool age though (coming from someone who watched it in middle school). It's more so about the triggering topics the show/manga deals with. For example: Sexual Assault/Molestation/R@pe, Kidnapping (specifically child kidnapping, lots of Pedos, Abuse/Child Abuse, There is a scene where Sebastian manipulates beast into pleasing her (he uses this time to ask her for specific information), Child Slavery, etc. If none of that triggers you I'd definitely recommend watching it.
