Missed Nucky and Margaret's interactions
soph_ia5 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This was the most enjoyable episode of Boardwalk Empire I've watched since about the 3rd season. I found the fourth season dull and this episode made me realize why: its lack of Nucky and Margaret interactions. Steve Buscemi and Kelly McDonald have excellent chemistry and it was great to see them together once again.

The scenes with Al Capone were also great. By now he's pretty much a ruthless killer and yet he's oddly likable and funny. Stephen Graham really does a great job at portraying him.

The 1880s flashbacks were nothing special, save for that tiny part where we see a bunch of pictures of young girls on The Commodore's desk. I thought it both a creepy and clever touch.

We're in the middle of it? Jesus...

We are in the half of the season, so what can we say? Well... When the finale started, i thought it's going to be an epic finale, which will end all the story parts, but it's not. I thought they moved 7 years from the events of the last season, because 1931 is probably historically the most interesting of all years in prohibition time, but no. Half of the time we are stock in 1880's. You would think that flashbacks are similar to those in Godfather II, so it must be interesting addition to the series, but no! There's literally nothing going on. So far we haven't learned anything new from them. You would guess that series has something to say in the present. Again, you are wrong. 3/4 of this episode is about Nucky and needless to say, i hate him since the start of 4th season. I used to like his character: Corrupted and charismatic politician, who liked to enjoy life, but had some morals left in him and was forced by all the people around him to be more and more gangster alike. Now he is just selfish uninteresting prick, which only concern is... Margaret. His part is tedious as well. For the defense of this episode, Al's character and part are still awesome. He is great combination of funny guy and deadly, unpredictable psychopath. But his part is there for only about 10 minutes! But if it wasn't there, i would vote much lower than that. In conclusion, i hope next episodes will be way less about Nucky and way more about everything else.

Enough with the flashbacks already

Warning: Spoilers
Who had the idea of fleshing out Nucky's character with flashbacks to his boyhood days? By now, none of that matters. Nucky is approaching the middle of middle age now and nobody should even care what he was like as a kid.

We already know that his father was a psychopathic drunk and that the Commodore is a sociopath, obsessed with his own goals of building a city. We get it already; Nucky is a sociopath and it doesn't matter how he came to be that way.

There are character arcs to advance and parts of the story are being shoved aside so that the writers can play with historical tales of the 1880s. The two previous seasons were downhill slides for the series, and now the final season is being dragged from pillar to post telling stories that should have been disposed of with flashbacks in the 3rd and 4th seasons instead of having so much dialog between characters that didn't matter.

It's too bad when the showrunners let the writers play with their own little ideas, if that's what happened with seasons 3 and 4. This could have been a great series. Too bad it wasn't allowed to be.
