Super stylish, a good mystery.
Sleepin_Dragon1 October 2019
The penultimate episode of the first series is a very good one. Geordie and Sydney get involved in a murder when they visit a night club.

This is a super stylish episode, it looks great and sounds even better, the night club singer is excellent. I like how the bond has grown between Sydney and Geordie, on the surface, two very different people, deep down very similar.

It's a very good mystery, which is perhaps a little beyond belief at times, he's truly a good time vicar, that's what makes him all the more interesting I guess.

Sidney enjoys the jazz...

Warning: Spoilers
One of the hallmarks of Grantchester is the realistic temptations a church minister faces, and how they could respond. Here Sidney is tempted, and ultimately succumbs to a night of seduction with the incredibly beautiful Gloria Dee (played by the stunning Camilla Beeput.

Sidney feels guilty pretty much soon afterwards, and this has consequences on his romance with German widow Hildegard Staunton (played by British actress Pheline Roggan who thankfully puts on a genuine Teutonic accent unlike that in Hogan's Heroes) which eventuates in the next episode.

I love Grantchester and I hope it can continue for many more seasons to come.

Sidney and Geordie pop down to London to visit a jazz nightclub and stumble into a murder. The dead woman is Claudette, the sister of Johnny, the man Sidney's sister went out with.

Their father Archie who is white is distraught. However the killing could be linked with something Archie himself did in the past and his tempestuous marriage with his children's black mother.

There are plenty of twists in this murder with sins of the past and bent coppers. It all grinds to a halt as we see Sidney moping around Amanda who he meets, he gets warned off by Amanda's fiancee. Later Sidney sleeps with a jazz singer from the nightclub even though he has a German girlfriend back in Cambridge. His messy personal life does not go unnoticed by Geordie who seems to be rather proud of the vicar's extracurricular activities.

The episode rather cements the relationship between Geordie and Sidney, the cop and his bible carrying assistant.
