Such a Drag! Probably can win in Fast and Furious
gauravdec-547-38194431 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Shivaay is so boring it can make an atheist pray to lord Shiva to stop the torture. Warning: Spoilers ahead. Can save you 173 minutes and a ticket worth of money. Shivaay climbs mountains in Slow mo like people usually breathe when a doctor asks to. He is a chilled out, chillum smoking sherpa who falls for Olga(a trekker)on an expedition. He justifies his name by showing his 3 tattoos: a snake, shiva's face & trishul. Simple. Right? Also,he Saves Olga from an avalanche by jumping into a tent and makes love while they await evacuation. Olga's expecting now and Shivay convinces against abortion by saying, " Ye bacha mujhe de do"! LOL. His daughter (Gaura) is firang, mute& can trek Mount Everest for a chocolate Because that's what kids do.On knowing about Olga, she wants to visit Bulgaria where the movie now takes the 'Taken' effect and Ajay fights everyone in Bulgaria to bring Olga back.Helping him is Vir das, a hacker who can enter any network using a dashboard. LOL. Just like Happy New Year! What keeps you awake is the Bolo Har Har song. The chase sequences are great but the emo drag kills them, too. Ajay and Gaura always get saved when bullets are being fired from both ends. By their Matrix like evading skills,They could have probably survived Hiroshima! The movie makes no sense and really needed a divine intervention while it was being shot.Shiv ji would get in his Rudra form if he gets to know a movie on his name has been made this bad! If you still choose to go watch it, remember! I warned ya!

Editing Problem
anupapu829 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
SHIVAAY - A common problem , which every movie has , when the hero is also the director and producer of the film , is that , he doesn't allow the editor to cut much of the film , and that's the Biggest problem with Shivaay. It could have easily been a 120-130 min film , and would have been great , but in real its 173 min long , and drabs and drabs and drabs for a really long time. Many critics have criticized it by saying that action set pieces were very long , but i didn't find them long. In fact the only departments where movies gets full marks are the technical department which include action choreography , cinematography , visual effects and music including background score. And its the drama where scenes get too long and should have been edited. Because lets be clear AJAY DEVGAN is just an above average director , but if he would have concentrated more on action (which he undoubtedly did) and avoided long drama scenes (which he didn't do) then he would have intelligently made a pretty good film . We cant dig out logic in this film , just because it doesn't have dance numbers or unwanted punchlines and have more sleek action scenes doesn't mean that its not a masala film . So there were too many logical gaps in the film which i am not gonna discuss. When it comes to acting , it was a very easy role for Ajay's caliber , and he did it very fine. But the dialogue writer gave him too much larger then life dialogues , which didn't seem realistic. Every time any character ask Shivaay anything , he reply it with a dialogue like Big B use to reply in AGNEEPATH. Abigail Eames as the daughter of Shivaay is the best among the cast. And on contrary Vir Das is the worst. Both actresses are just average , which cost a little to the quality of the film

. The thing is that , action set pieces are gorgeous , and cover a big part of the film , and those action scenes keep you on the edge of the seat. And its important to watch those scenes on big screen. Like i mentioned , some better editing and a better director to handle the drama would have made this movie a lot better. But now its just an above average entertaining film . But i am glad that at least Ajay tried to raise the bar of Bollywood action with this film. And yes i think if someone didn't mind not so good long dramatic scenes and only cares about how good the action scenes are , then he may pretty much like this movie more then me. 6.8/10. by ANuP APu KuMaR

Shivaa Personified
puranjan16330 October 2016
Shivaay is the movie which has taken Bollywood actions and special effects to the next level. In this movie Ajay Devgn is simply fabulous. If you do not see this movie in the the theaters you are really missing the fun. The opening scene itself is PAISA WASOOL(worth your every penny) . The story is about a simple mountaineer saving his daughter from the Russian mafia. Apart from super awesome action there is also a lot of emotional scenes and a bit of drama. Some of the scenes are a bit physics defying, but Ajay Devgn just nailed it as a whole. Really good action flick and Ajay Devgn has the swag. So I would urge all the action movie lovers you can give this movie a try.

Fights - Si. Movie - No.
lotekguy-130 July 2021
After a snoozefest of a soapy beginning, the action eventually kicks into high gear for an adrenaline-pumping ordeal. Getting his daughter up to age eight drags badly. But once she's TAKEN, Ajay goes Full Neeson on a sh**load of vicious sex traffickers and corrupt cops. Then once the dust settles, it's back to crappy scripting for a stupid, protracted ending. Fast-forward through all the between-fight dialog and you'll be far more satisfied watching Ajay doing his hero thing.

Best action movie of Bollywood till date.
Ni301228 October 2016
With amazing action scenes and eye catching action sequences, this movie is undoubtedly the best movie of Bollywood till the date.

All the lovers of action movies must go for it. they will enjoy it without closing their eyes for a second. Ajay's acting and action are unpredictable so good.it can't be said, you have to go to the theater and feel yourself. Erika is good as a newcomer as well as Sayyesha.but the most surprise package is that lovely and adorable girl with her so impressive acting skills without telling a word.

Story is not very strange, but the locality and the way it's been described in the movie is new for Bollywood. As a director, Ajay Devgn, is he improving. He needs more time to be perfect in this new field. in this movie you can watch beautiful scenes, breathtaking action sequences, fresh story, loud and lovable music and off-course descent acting of Ajay and company. you can compare it with a Hollywood action movie with limited budget and sources and will find it larger than expectation. it would have been better if this movie could have been 30 minutes shorter. screen play has not been written perfectly. it could have been 30 minutes shorter. Bollywood writers have a lot to learn from Hollywood writers. Ajay has already spoken boldly so much about the movie and its clashes.. so, some haters will surely rate it bad to worse and will also affect box office buzz. but overall it will be a masterpiece in Bollywood action movies.

Shivaay is an out and out Ajay Devgn's Action film, which has some breathtaking visuals by Aseem Bajaj.
binducherungath28 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Shivaay is an Action film by Ajay Devgn and it also marks his directorial debut. The film is an out and out action film with more of fight sequences/trekking and less of words. It operates on a simple plot, though very powerful relationship that of a father- daughter, and wider issues like child trafficking at international level. It does have some breathtaking visuals of mountains and action sequences. But certainly the film has its own loopholes.

The film begins with Shivaay being knocked out to the ground and his breathing sound. The camera focuses on the hand-knitted doll lying there. Then the story is conveyed in flash back, to be precise 9 years back. Shivaay (Ajay Devgn) is a guide, who is an expert in trekking. He does help the people during catastrophic landslides and also helps Indian Army in covert operations. He falls in love with a Bulgarian girl Olga (Erika Kaar) who came for trekking to India. Olga gets uncomfortable when she comes to know regarding her unexpected pregnancy. She wanted to go back to Bulgaria and had her own life to live. She did not want the child, but Shivaay was very adamant on having the baby. He asks Olga to stay back till her delivery, give him the child and then go back. Olga goes back to Bulgaria giving the girl child to Shivaay. Then, one gets to see 8 year old mute Gaura (Abigail Eames) trekking along with Shivaay. When she discovers that her mother is in Bulgaria contrary to what had been conveyed to her about Olga not alive, she forces Shivaay to take her to Bulgaria to meet Olga. The moment they land in Bulgaria, the trouble starts. Very soon we see Shivaay chasing his enemies, running away from police authorities, getting trapped in a foreign land etc. Anushka (Sayesha Saigal), an embassy employee and Vir Das, a technical geek in a hacker's role come to the rescue of Shivaay. Parallels are drawn between Gaura- Shivaay's and Anushka-Girish Karnad's father-daughter relationships.

Shivaay lands into what sort of troubles? Who become his enemies and why? How does Shivaay fight back ? Is he able to explore the nexus of child trafficking ?

Regarding the cast, Ajay Devgn definitely stands out as Action Hero. Rest of the cast have less screen time and are OK. Girish Karnad, a great actor, is underutilized in the film.

Cinematographer Aseem Bajaj has indeed given some great visuals, it is top-notch.

What lacks in the film is that it is very quick in jumping from father-daughter bond/emotional connect to the issues of child trafficking followed by chasing sequences between Shivaay and the culprits and at times between Shivaay and police authorities too.

Shivaay is an out and out Ajay Devgn's Action film, which has some breathtaking visuals by Aseem Bajaj. Watch it, if you like action films.

A beautifully shot disaster
itzrahulsoni31 October 2016
I am giving it 1 points simply because there is no way to give zero. Being a Devgn fan, I went to the movie with my family, but I was disappointed to the core. This movie just didn't make any sense. Besides, I couldn't connect with any protagonist in any way.

Everyone seems either over the top (Sorry, Ajay)... or simply under played (Girish Karnad, what was your role again please??). I am trying to recover from the trauma called Shivaay. If the other reviews that I saw were not by folks who promote the film just for promoting sake, I am willing to admit that I have a very weird or may be no sense of movies.

If flying mountaineers is what you are after, go watch it. And please do let me know if you really really like it.

Best ever Himalayan Mountain Cinemagraphy along with Amazing stunts and Graphics from Ajay Devgn
bunnymehra198528 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this First day First show, as I have lots of expectation from this movie but very frankly speaking its not that action oriented as it was shown in trailer, its more on family drama part rather than Action part, but this really doesn't mean its an average movie its a high class entertainment movie, which whole family can watch. Ajay Devgn at his best and amazing as usual, stunts and graphics and specially the location covered in Himalayan Mountains are not comparable to any other India movie, no doubt. Erika was too good in her role, Saiyasi Sehgal first rate in her small but important role, Actors like Vir Das as Ethical hacker, Girish Kannad was impressive in their cameos. Story is too old and the main negative point of movie may be inspire from some old movies Taken & rocky handsome. I am sure this movie will receive Negative reviews from Critic's though it will earn a lot of profit. An Bold Actor Like Ajay said in favor of Country apart from some bolly craps actor so he would be rated negatively by special critic group and media but in theater occupancy was 85 % better than ADHM which was 52%.

I will rate this 8/10.

Excellent Action-Sequences Shine In A Predictable Film!
namashi_123 February 2017
Bollywood Superstar/National-Award Winning Actor Ajay Devgn returns to the Director's Chair after nearly a decade with 'Shivaay'. And Devgn delivers, as the film is a visual delight. The Excellent Action-Sequences & Fabulous Cinematography only add to a very-good looking film. But, Story-Wise, Devgn opts for a predicable story, that puts you off at times. More on that later...

'Shivaay' Synopsis: A Himalayan mountaineer transforms into a mean destroyer, after his mute daughter is kidnapped by human traffickers.

'Shivaay' is a one-man-army story about a father in search of his kidnapped mute daughter, who'd stop at nothing. 'Shivaay' is a superhero who has the Power of Lord Shiva & Devgn plays the part believably. While the first-hour is more on the sub-plot involving Shivaay & his lady-love, who exits his life right after she delivers a daughter, its the second-hour that forms the core of the story. This is essentially a father-daughter story, that offers some heartwarming moments. There is an earnestness to the sequences involving Shivaay & his Daughter, that certainly engage you.

Unfortunately, the rest of 'Shivaay' is a mixed bag. The first-hour, to begin with, which is more of a love-story in the Himalayan Mountains, is strictly okay. The second-hour is much better, as the action kicks in rapidly & leaves a solid impression. But the villains appear as caricatures & their depiction, isn't powerful enough either. Devgn keeps the pace fast, but the narrative is uneven overall. At times the film soars with fist-pumping action & at times, falters in its otherwise dramatic moments. The Writing needed to be crisper & more solid.

Devgn's Direction is well-done. He's handled the film well, but Sandeep Srivastava & Robin Bhatt's Screenplay puts him down at times. I wish the Writing remained sharp, as its uneven. Aseem Bajaj's Cinematography is superb. The lens-man has filmed 'Shivaay', expertly. Editing needed to be crisper. Art & Costume Design are decent. Action-Sequences are Exhilarating. Each & Every Stunt has been executed & performed, fabulously. The Action in 'Shivaay' is certainly among the best to come out of India in recent times. Mithoon's Score is good. Background Score is fair.

Performance-Wise: Devgn delivers, as always. He looks the part & excels as the Superhero. Abigail Eames as Shivaay's daughter, is adorable. Erika Kaar is fine, but her diction is faulty. Sayesha Saigal looks gorgeous & delivers a confident debut performance. Vir Das hams. Saurabh Shukla is wasted. Ditto for Girish Karnad.

On the whole, 'Shivaay' has awesome action as its Ace, but a predictable story-line wears you off after a point.

Worst movie of 2016!
proishaanpuripro1 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Watch this movie at your own risk, chances are it might does some serious brain damage and by that I mean killing brain cells and by that I mean the sheer stupidity of the movie might rub off on you.

-Let me say this right off the bat that this movie is half-copy of Liam Neeson's Taken, but of course with Bollywood rendition which already sets the bar quite low. Through out the movie, you are gonna ask yourself whether Shivaay (Ajay Devgan) has super powers or is he like one of those south movies gimmick where one guy can easily take on an army of bad guys single handedly and I think it is latter because there is a scene where Ajay Devgan gets shot by a Gatling Gun from a Helicopter and still running faster than Usian Bolt like there's no tomorrow and acting all fine and then gets stabbed twice by the main antagonist, but still somehow manage to fight him on equal terms. I am still surprise that this movie has such a high rating despite the fact that the conclusion of the fight was a load of BS (SPOILERS AHEAD):-Towards the end of the movie both fell down from the cliff because they were obviously fighting at the edge, but for some reason that exact same deep cliff transformed into a slope cliff while they were falling and rolling because according to laws of physics it is impossible to roll while falling on a vertical cliff, right RIGHT? and they still somehow manage to survive {OBVIOUS PLOT ARMOR} and after Shivaay killed the antagonist he somehow teleported back to the top of the bridge from where he fell down in the first place, HOW? Are you telling me that guy who has been shot and stabbed somehow manage to climb that cliff with bare hands? That is ridiculous even for South Movies and I am not making this up, it literally happened like this.(SPOILERS END)

-Let's talk about the story now. The first hour of the movie pretty much establish this that Shivaay is the master of hill climbing and he has no equal, he is pretty much a god when it comes to Mountains. Okay, I get it but what in the hell is the point of this when it almost has no relationship with the rest of the movie. I mean literally more than half of the movie is dumb investigation and chasing after the suppose kidnappers. If the movie is trying to show us that because of the time he spent in the mountains is the reason why he is so supernaturally strong, then why not make a movie where Shivaay is some ex-govt. official? That would save your location budget and would establish a strong plot material.

-The only reason why I gave 2 rating because some of the CGI effects were damn fine like the one where the photo of Shivaay's daughter transforms into ash and disappears into thin air from Shivaay's hand, but that is it. One scene is not gonna save this un-holy god of an abomination.

Excellent Audio Visual Delight and Breathtaking Action Sequence - Full Review (Best, Good, Bad, Ugly)
deepeshdeomurari28 October 2016
You will find your investment on movie ticket got good return in just 15 mins. All remaining movie is the bonus. Perfection in action sequences and visuals that make you wonder that India is most beautiful.

Best: Action sequences, visual effects, audio and merging of song in the content - sometime you will forget that there is some song going on background.

Excellent Acting by Ajay Devgn, father of diplomat, hacker guy.

Good: Intention in making, Newness in story, innovative concept, inclusion of international actors, cute kid. Very heavy movie - it will surely leave some impression on you. You will feel that you got some return.

Bad: Lack of maturity in acting of Diplomat girl. Very less link with Real Lord Shiva - just given a very light flavour, chase was intentional it could have been noble and divine.

Ugly: Length of the movie - it could have been 20 mins less. You surely need to take popcorn with you and then you will love it. This is the only thing that will turn you off.

Pack of action, lack of direction
arghyakusum_das29 October 2016
Pack of action, lack of direction. A father's saga to protect his abducted daughter. Analytically, action is too loosely coupled with the drama part of the movie. Avoiding much spoiler, there was possibly no need to showcase a mountaineer's action for this commonplace story considering, 'Taken' in Hollywood and 'Mardani' in Bollywood. It's not copy-pasted though in that sense. Well, good job Actor-AjayDevgan, once again you successfully protected your family after 'Drishyam' :). But Director-Devgan, better luck next time. Please try to correlate the action with emotion and drama especially when all are high in a story. 6-star for breath-taking action-sequences on beautiful mountains.

Worsest ....Aawfully ....aaawwwfullll !!!
wikiiiest7 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
An actor should never think of direction along with acting in it.

I have always liked Ajay Devgan for his acting. But, this movie is something, I never imagined. Far worst from the worsest.

Well, all you can see here is Bajrangi Bhaijaan(Hindi) + TAKEN (English) = TOTAL DISASTER by Ajay Devgan.

The logic is out of order most of the times, background music isn't matching always, no one would even remember the tune of any song, fights aren't good, emotions were out of line and story is a big DISASTER.

If I start writing about the spoilers, maybe I can't stop writing another big article about why this movie shouldn't have happened.

I never knew that, Ajay Devgan is the person behind the story, else I would have never wasted my time for it. It's really PATHETIC and worst. To be honest, this is the worst movie so far that I have seen in this year 2016.

Well, if you are just a fan of Ajay Devgan and doesn't care about

any aspects of the movie, then this movie is made for you, else, there is nothing much to be liked in it.

High octane action sequences with not needed Bollywood melodrama
adityadeshpande28 October 2016
This film has an average premise, great budget, excellent actor and a star and to top it all it is a joy watching the cinematography of this movie but wish if the screenplay was good wish if there was less of melodrama and a tad bit less of bullet time but only if you could wish.

The story is about a Himalayan mountaineer who is in deep love with his surroundings. A damsel from Bulgaria who is in deep love with her surroundings enters into the story and meets our tattooed mountaineer. He gets the damsel pregnant out of wedlock. When a baby is about to arrive either it creates happiness or there are some serious discussion happenings,in this case it is the latter.

This is a film which promises some great viewing but fails the expectations and leaves you cringing. The editing could have been sleek like almost 30 to 40 mins could have been chopped off. There are a lot of characters which either could have been avoided or they could have made the same point in much less screen time then what they are given.

If this film could have been directed by a seasoned director it could seriously have made a huge change.Yes I am saying that the direction is sloppy, going up and down, loose and tight, fast and slow ,its a two paced cricket wicket to give an analogy.

The music is patchy as well. The background is good and yes it is not the usual, songs sprinkled all over, there are a separate background scores which truly are great and it is worth mentioning.

Now lets come to an important factor the VFX the CGI and the action which is the best thing about the film. No these are not in par with the world cinema but are better then world cinema in some of the scenes. This film can be called as the new barometer for the action scenes in India. Some of the best chase sequence one might see in Bollywood are in this film.

The film seems to be seriously inspired from some Hollywood flicks primarily "Taken" and a very specific Bollywood film.(You know which it is).

In acting department Ajay is great as always.Playing a 4 grade fail, a lower middle class person in "Drishyam" and a mountaineer in this film shows the persons variance. The supporting cast is great as well in patches and sometimes not needed as well.

Overall this is a film which has a screenplay that can have a time of 90-120 mins. The film tries to play the favorite tried and tested emotional card of Bollywood which it fails. The film tries seriously hard to invoke emotions but it fails almost most of the times.

The film is like a sports player which shows immense talent but is not able to convert that onto the field and that is what hurts the viewer the most.

Awesome..... :D
pradipta-115-19284028 October 2016
Hollywood style action. What's Good: Just like the trailer, the locations and cinematography of Shivaay are completely breathtaking.

What's Bad: The plot being inspired from Taken, a lengthy run-time and an epic fail at making any emotional connect.

Loo Break: Needed most in the stretched climax & Ajay-Erika's awkward love-making scene!

Watch or Not?: Shivaay is an action drama that immense action but zero emotion. Strictly for Ajay Devgn fans because sitting through it for 2 hrs 40 min may be difficult for others. Shivaay is an Ajay Devgn show all the way. He is literally there in every frame of the film. Although, he rarely gets a chance to show off his acting chops in the midst of all the action. While he seems better in the second half, his act in the love story seems a little childish.

Erika Kaar could have rather spoken in English than the awkward Hindi that we are subjected to.

Sayyesha's role is too small and I'm not sure if Shivaay is the best choice for her debut. She does not get noticed in this role.

Abigail Eames does a good job at emoting stuff since her character is speech impaired.

Girish Karnad and Vir Das are extremely unnecessary characters in the film.

Ambitious and Epic.....to a Fault
ashayuv4 November 2016
Shivaay is undoubtedly one of the most ambitious Indian films ever made. The thrilling but vague trailer promised audiences a movie that would rival the sleek action films of Hollywood, and in this specific regard, it definitely does not disappoint. The action is filmed fluidly and there is no shortage of it, with sequences ranging from no-holds-barred car chases through the streets of Bulgaria, to brutal fistfights and gun battles sprawling across the city of Sofia. The cinematography is also absolutely gorgeous, with the camera leaping and diving to capture jagged snow caps of the Himalayan mountainside. However, Shivaay's slick action is deeply contrasted by its disappointing screenplay and characters.

The protagonist Shivaay, for which the film is named after, is himself a bit of a strange character. A daredevil who leaps off mountains for fun and refers to himself in third person, his mannerisms make him un- relatable for the first act of the movie. The romance between Shivaay and Olga is also laughably unconvincing, and supporting characters such as Kancha, Anusha, and Wahab are completely wasted. In fact, if they and their cringeworthy dialogues were removed entirely from the film, the movie would be much better and more focused. One shining light in all of this is Abigail Eames, who plays Shivaay's daughter, Gaura. Eames handles her first major role beautifully, and is wonderfully convincing as the Shivaay's fiery daughter. In fact, Eames and Devgan have great chemistry on screen, and are genuinely believable as a loving daughter and a father who will stop at nothing to save his family.

The film also suffers from strange changes in tone. At one moment, the film will be incredibly dark and heart-pounding, but in the next minute, it will jump to a lighthearted scene, unfortunately breaking all of the well-built tension. The film also requires a suspension of disbelief, as Ajay Devgan runs successfully from hilariously inaccurate gunmen, drives without his foot on the gas pedal, and survives beatings and stabbings with minor inconvenience. While the lack of realism is nowhere as crazy as a movie like Singham, it still is quite puzzling. With the serious criminal and social issue that the movie is based around, a consistently dark and realistic tone would have much better suited this film.

Overall, Shivaay wastes too much time dabbling in its one-dimensional supporting characters, which bring the movie to a mind-numbing length of 3 hours. The film's attempts to mask its weak screenplay behind a thunderous soundtrack don't work, and it often feels like Shivaay's film editor, Dharmendra Sharma, fell asleep at the wheel. Shivaay tries hard to be a more ambitious version of "Taken", but often stumbles due to that very reason. However, if you are willing to overlook the movie's list of flaws in exchange for phenomenal action sequences and convincing performances by Ajay Devgan and Abigail Eames, Shivaay is worth a watch.

Bollywood cliché at its worst
rtanuj29 October 2016
This movie is a typical Bollywood cliché albeit in a different setting ~ The Himalayas. But, if you are thinking that you are in for a Himalayan Adventure story then you couldn't be more wrong. This film isn't about the Himalayas or the mountains - this film is only about one thing or rather about one person -> Ajay Devgan a.k.a Shivaay a.k.a "Shiva with a y" because "y not" - his words, not mine. Shivaay is basically an invincible mountain guide whose circumstances develop in such a way that he is forced to travel places, fight off hordes and hordes of criminals and mafia and yes, do a lot of drama along the way. The problem with the movie is that the sequences are too unrealistic, luck is too convenient and drama is forced. The whole movie feels like someone needed to scratch his / her narcissistic urge. No wonder that the producer, the director and the lead actor of the movie are the same.

Best movie for family and about the real love involved in it.
bsrphaniyk28 October 2016
Movie is excellent. Ajay Devgan really worked hard and it has shown out pretty well on the screen. Lead actress done well, did best as per the given part in the story. The emotional connect with both father and child, captivated the audience to their seats, In fact it got carried off the screen when we came out of the theater. It's like hangover. All actors performed to their given roles. Songs are good. one song after the interval with Sayesha may be not required. Cinematography excellent. Action sequences excellent. Screenplay would have been better If it has given to it's expert. More effort would be put on background music, when such high octane action and emotions and chases were going on them, music at the background is not apt sometimes. Introduction scene of Ajay Devgan might be taken care of even better. Little more effort on Villain role would have been better. Anyhow overall the film impacts a positive impression on the audience and family audience would love this emotional drama. The climax scene with father and daughter is epic.

Shivaay was Superb Romantic Action Thriller, shows emotional story of Father and Daughter. Worth watching. Don't miss it...
kaushalmodi19852 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Movie Review: Shivaay Ratings: 3.5/5 Genre: Action/Romance/Thriller

In year 2008, Ajay Devgan has directed movie named 'U Me aur Hum' which was flopped on box office. These is the second time Ajay Devgan is directing movie (Shivaay). Will he mark the success with his direction or just fail as per last time. Let's analyze...

Story starts with the introduction of Shivaay (Ajay Devgan) with helping to Indian Army on some assignment. Once he leading a group of mountaineers, he meets Olga paramski ( Erika Kaar) and they both fall in love and have a child named Gaura (Abigial Eames). Olga leaves both Shivaay and Gaura and went back to her home country Bulgaria. Shivaay looks after Gaura as single parent. One day Gaura comes to know about her mother and wants to go Bulgaria to meet her mother. Shivaay and Gaura wents to Bulgaria to meet Olga, but Gaura has been kidnapped by unknown persons. Shivaay starts search for his daughter Gaura and is helped by Anushka (Sayyeshaa), Wahab (Vir Das) and Sharma (Saurabh Shukla). Does Shivaay manage to find his daughter Gaura and Olga in Unknown Country Bulgaria is what forms the rest of the film.

Shivaay has several plus points to watch it. Action Pack Scenes and Stunning visual effects are heart of the movie. Excellent Cinematography, Beautiful locations of Himalaya's range and Bulgaria are really looks awesome and gives stunning experience to viewers. Climax fight will definitely gives you Thrilling experience.

If we talk about Performances, Ajay Devgan has performed superbly as Shivaay and no doubt he carries full movie on his Shoulders. Abigial Eames is excellent in role of Ajay's mute daughter. Erika Kaar is good. Sayeeshaa, Vir Das & Saurabh Shukla helps movie to move forward in supporting roles.

On the whole, Shivaay was Superb Romantic Action Thriller, shows emotional story of Father and Daughter relations. Awesome stunning visual effects, Action pack Scenes and Excellent Cinematography makes it a perfect watch. Worth watching. Don't miss it...

Hero- Ajay Devgn, Villain-the script
Pramitheus31 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Right now I have surging head-ache after watching Shivaay. I had high hopes because, ADHM left me extremely disappointed, I am a fan of Ajay Devgn. Alas, all hopes came crashing like that bad CGI'd avalanche. There was so much of Ajay that he couldn't make a cohesive story to stop his self- glorification. From the opening sequence I was sure that Ajay is going to glorify the hell out of himself in this movie and BOY, he does. He goes to the extent of defying physics(in practically every action scene), biology(nobody wears nothing even when surrounded by snow) and even LOGIC. I mean, the dude gets shot twice, stabbed twice, once in the back-bone, falls off a cliff and suffers only a sprain in his hand. COME ON!!OK, Let me just divide this review into parts.

ACTING- The acting in the movie suffers from tonal differences. None of the characters settle on one tone. Sometimes it's campy, sometimes dead-serious even in serious situations. There is a over-dose of Ajay Devgn. He is a mixture of Krrish, Shaktimann but also not. Does his powers come and go? On top of that the whole thing about his name being Shivaay, the name of the movie being Shivaay, his tattoos related to Shiva has actually no relevance. He is no re-incarnation nor is the story a modern adaptation of a mythological tale of the God. It's just plain confusing. Apparently it draws the crowd who believe in the mythology. Erika Kaar is average to be fair. It could have been done by practically anyone. Probably Ajay wanted to go to Bulgaria, so they chose her. I don't know why they went for a non-Indian actress. Abigail Eames is expressive and not going to the point of being over-the- top. I don't know whether she will work in the Hindi film industry or abroad but this shouldn't be her first and last performance in a feature length film. Vir Das, o gosh! Vir Das is supposed to be a hacker and according to Ajay Devgn, a hacker is like THAT. He just over-acted like . He was supposed to be the comic-relief but there was no subtlety in it. Sayesha Saigal probably was the flower-vase of this movie, the damsel who accompanies the protagonist. Now that I think of it, what did her character actually do to help him? She just drove Shivaay to the apparent villain and that's it. She didn't do any actual help to find the girl. It was so sad to see a hacker being portrayed so poorly and succumbing to the likes of that girl. NOW, the villain. There are three villains, the guy playing games on the phone, the old guy and Chengiz. Chengiz is the main villain, he has one line and a screen- time of 10 minutes max. YUP. The main villain. The guy playing games on the phone has no line, is a bit mysterious but when the final showdown begins he fizzles out like a stale firework. The background of the old guy isn't discovered. There are no layers to the only negative character which could have had some gravity to it.

DIRECTION and SCRIPT- Ajay Devgn put everything he had into the script but he forgot to add logic into it. Apparently a broken leg and dangling off a cliff doesn't stop someone from making out when you are just a few feet from death. The most shocking thing was the representation of the Nepali guy. He was stereo-typically named Kancha and talked in the "OO SHABJI" lingo. No nepali talks like that but in Ajay's world, they do. There is a chase scene and only, Ajay can make a chase scene feel boring. The fight scenes are used with vomit cam or shaky cam, because Ajay Devgn can't fake fight. It's clear that they were doing it slowly and the whole thing was sped up. The editing is extremely choppy. It is so choppy that the music in a scene doesn't end and the scene abruptly cuts to something else. The dialogues are so bland. Normal people don't talk in philosophical lines all the time. The script demanded there be an earthquake to let Gaura know about her mother. You see the vibe? There is no middle-ground. Either too bland or too over-the-top.

CINEMATOGRAPHY- When there is nothing happening the cinematography can be appreciated. The moment something starts all the build up goes to waste. The camera shakes and shakes till you see only a blur and nothing else. They tried to go for something different but it was much of the same. They made a chase scene look boring. How can u appreciate someone who made a chase scene look boring in an action movie? You can't. I think Bollywood has still a long way to go to match action and CGI heavy scenes with Hollywood.

FINAL VERDICT- Don't waste your money on this. Buy it on the DVD because 3 hours of this slug-fest is going to give you a head-ache like I have right now. If you a buy the DVD you can pause at your own will but if you go to the theatre you are in Ajay's territory and he won't let you leave when you want to. Trust me. Buy the DVD.

Action, Visuals, Special Effects are better than any Bollywood flick ever! Go Watch
anjaneai28 October 2016
I have never been a great fan of Ajay Devgn, but I couldn't resist myself watching this movie first day after watching the amazing trailers which has astounded audience worldwide. And, I wasn't disappointed.

The movie actually didn't wasted time in establishing characters or their equation. Though, we got an idea about the story-line through trailers, still there are few twists that feel keep you on the edge. Despite the duration of close to 3 hours, I didn't feel bored or checked by phone even once. The action sequences are the best ever coming from Indian Cinema which goes hand in hand with amazing composition, picturesque cinematography . It is so good at times you won't be able to guess which scenes actually used Green screen.

The music is extremely powerful and has been timed nicely, 'Darkhast' and 'Raatein' comes in 40min and picks pace right after that.

The only problem I had was with the dialogues which at times felt over the top, certain conversations were uncalled for. A few scenes could have been toned down, they were unnecessarily exaggerating Shivaay's presence. The story wasn't something you haven't seen before however, the execution was thrilling and spot on.

Watch this movie for never-seen-before Cinematography, FX & action (interesting ending and great music are bonus)

PS: This may seem like Taken in some aspects, but it has a deeper emotional connect, distinct execution and amazing visual appeal .

Awesome Cinematography But Poor Film Edits
reyesrobin_ce30 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The cinematography is awesome however there are some scenes that are shaky specially on chasing scenes. The story is not that impressive as the plot is already seen in some Hollywood movies. The acting are not convincing and very strained. Film editing is poor as there are no proper transitions on important scene to the next chapter of the story i.e. intermission. The introductory scene showing Shivaay lying in prone position at the top of a hill has no connection with the story. The role of Gaura (Shivaay's daughter) may be better if she is not mute. I suspect that they cannot find a European girl that can speak Hindi fluently. Still, I can say that the film entertained me as Ajay has shown a very good fighting scenes and beautiful mountain shots.

Perfect Marketing for the Old Drama
budhrajavishal1 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Except the scenery, there is nothing to watch in the latest Singham star.

Ajay Devgan hits the screen with one more unwatchable action drama under his direction. He is there in every single frame of the film to carry out the burden the worst screen play of the decade. Abigail Eames delivers a powerful performance as a mute girl. Background score is also good and action scenes are watchable.

Saurabh Shukla, Girish Karnad & Vir Das are total waste. Worst part of the movie is EDITING. Story is simple but too stretched. Cinematography is good.

Last Words: Go watch this, only if don't have anything else to do...
