- Dan and Frank travel up the coast in search of a suspect. But Dan's feelings for Elena are threatening to overwhelm him.

Morton (Stanley Tucci) goes to Stoddart's house after dark. When he enters, Yuri (Emil Hostina), who had been lurking in the darkened house, slips away unseen. Morton sits at Stoddart's laptop and finds screens full of GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) data. He pulls open a drawer and finds a folder marked "Fortitude Arctic Research Center." A single document inside with GPR data is marked with "Pettigrew" at the top. When Morton leaves, Yuri is watching him from a distance.
Ingrid (Mia Jexen) and Dan (Richard Dormer) are at the hotel café. She tells him that she hasn't been able to sleep - every time she closes her eyes, she sees Stoddart's body. Dan says he didn't get any sleep either. Petra (Alexandra Moen) calls Ingrid and Ingrid leaves.
Dan looks up and sees Elena (Veronica Echegui) come downstairs with Frank (Nicholas Pinnock). He stares at them, expressionless.
Dan gets a call from Ingrid that there is gunfire at Tavrani's (Ramon Tikaram) place and that Dan is the closest to the location.
Windows are shot out from the inside as Dan approaches the building. He busts in and finds Henry (Michael Gambon), shooting up Tavrani's taxidermy workshop, while Tavrani, with his hands in the air, surveys the damage. Dan tells Henry to lower his rifle, but instead, Henry levels it at Dan. Dan holsters his weapon and steps toward Henry with his own hands in the air. Henry says he's solved his exile problem - he'll just shoot himself and Tavrani will stuff him. Dan surprises Henry by grabbing the barrel of the rifle. Henry gives it up. Dan walks Henry out and takes him home.
Henry looks around his house and tells Dan he's considering loading all his belongings onto a skiff and setting it on fire. In fact, he says, Dan can strike the match as he's used to doing the Governor's dirty work. Dan sits quietly looking at an old snapshot of him and Henry, in happier times, both smiling at the camera. Henry grabs it, crumples it and tells Dan to get the f-out. Dan tells Henry to sit down, and when he does, Dan gives Henry the ultimatum of no more guns and to stop acting like a raging old bastard. Dan promises to find who killed Stoddart. Henry, sadly, says Dan doesn't trust him because Henry's a drunk. Dan guiltily says he thinks he caused Henry's drinking, but Henry says he drinks because he shot a man in the head. Dan objects to this, saying it WAS his fault, but he can't tell Henry why.
On video conference, Morton shows DI Littlejohn (Lorcan Cranitch) the page of GPR data from Stoddart's desk. The document is folded and crumpled as if it has been passed around a lot, and there is the notation, "Max 2.5" inside the folder. Morton interprets the data as an oil field the size of Belgium, or a mattress. Littlejohn will have the techs examine the data.
Dan and Petra go to look for Ciaran (Jonjo O'Neill) at the camping goods store he runs. She says Eric (Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson) had checked the shop last night and reminds Dan that Jason (Aaron McCusker) needs Ciaran to corroborate Jason's alibi for the night Stoddart was killed. As they look around outside the shop, Dan tells Petra to call Ciaran's cellphone number and walks to the back of the building. He hears a phone ring inside one of the storerooms, kicks open the door, and follows a blood trail inside. Ciaran is on the floor, beaten, tied up, and with a backpack zipped around his head. They free him and he says it was Ronnie Morgan (Johnny Harris). They call an ambulance for Ciaran.
As he's being treated, Ciaran says Ronnie came in to rent a boat but did not have any money. When Ronnie wouldn't take no for an answer, Ciaran produced a Bowie knife and was shocked when Ronnie grabbed it by the blade and twisted it out of Ciaran's hand, and then beat up Ciaran. Eric thinks that with a boat, Ronnie could now be anywhere. Ciaran says Ronnie is out of control as if he's possessed.
Jules (Jessica Raine) is with Liam (Darwin Brokenbro) who is still in the hyperbaric chamber. The monitors start beeping as Liam has a violent seizure. A medic comes to help and says the doctor is on the way.
Ingrid and Petra go to Ronnie's house. No one is home, and Petra notices Carrie's (Elizabeth Dormer-Phillips) rabbit is not in its hutch. Ingrid finds an unopened bottle of Ronnie's meds - anti-psychotics. Back at the station, Dan says Ronnie hasn't caused trouble since he arrived in town, but now that he's off his meds, he may have gone psychotic. Petra points out he grabbed Ciaran's knife by the blade. Eric says he will go with Frank to take a launch up the coast to look for Ronnie, but Dan says HE will go, assigning Eric to canvass the town with flyers with Carrie's picture. At the dock, Frank is prepping the boat and tells Dan he has tracked Ronnie by the GPS on his boat and he is 7 miles up the coast. Frank adds that it's strange that according to the GPS, Ronnie sailed 30 miles out and then came back. Dan figures Carrie is with him and is at risk.
Jules comes to the dock and tells Frank that Liam had a fit and she disagrees with how the doctor and medics are treating him. She demands Frank goes to see Liam, but Dan says that HE needs Frank. Jules argues that Liam needs Frank more and storms off. Dan asks Frank what is happening between the two, and Frank tells him he's moved out of the house. Dan asks Frank if that means he's staying at the hotel, but Frank doesn't want to talk about it. They head out.
Max (Michael Obiora) gets into Yuri's parked truck and Yuri tells Max that Morton found and kept the GPR scan Max ran for Stoddart. Just then, Eric comes up to the truck and shows them Carrie's flyer. Max says he hasn't seen her, and lies that Yuri can't speak English. Eric looks suspiciously at Yuri and asks him if he knows him. Yuri pretends to be confused and responds in Russian.
Henry comes home and finds Morton walking around his house. Morton is studying Henry's photographs of polar bears. Morton calls himself the inevitable consequence of Henry's call to DI Littlejohn a few days ago. Morton says Pettigrew's early morning walk was abnormal and Henry agrees. Morton asks if Henry was friends with Stoddart, and Henry replies, good friends. Morton asks if Henry thinks the two deaths were connected, and Henry says, no. Morton produces the recording of Henry's call to Littlejohn. Morton promises Henry he'll fly him to London and provide protection. Henry says there's no point in that as that's not his voice on the recording.
On the launch, Frank has to yell at Dan three times before Dan snaps out of his vacant stare and hands Frank the GPS he needed.
At the hotel, Morton sees Hildur (Sofie Grabol) talking to Trish (Chipo Chung). Hildur has guessed that Trish has decided to stay there instead of with her and Eric. Trish tells Hildur she will need to fly home and walks out. Morton casually tells Hildur he's not surprised Trish left Hildur's house because he knows Trish thinks Hildur killed Stoddart. He explains that Trish has a theory that Stoddart was going to deny Hildur permission to build the hotel. Hildur feigns confusion and says Stoddart hadn't denied her permission. Morton says that Stoddart was going to change his report; and, in fact, Stoddart had left such a message on Trish's phone, a message that Trish says Hildur erased. Hildur asks Morton what he thinks. Morton says it's a 50/50 chance the solution is: there's a conspiracy involving the governor and the sheriff and a lucrative glacier hotel, and a poor bastard off his meds having a psychotic episode in a stranger's house.
Yuri sneaks into Morton's hotel room and takes the GPR scan from the folder.
At Jules and Frank's house, Eric ask Jules what she knows about Carrie. She says Carrie always seemed happy. Eric asks, and Jules tells him, she and Frank were apart for four or five years when he was serving in Afghanistan. Eric notes he hasn't been apart from Hildur since they were married. He laughs that Hildur won't let him leave her side as she is dependent on him. Jules laughs along. Eric goes to their bathroom, accidentally drops a bottle of perfume, and tries to clean it up. He finds Frank's bloody shirt in the trash bin.
Dan and Frank find Ronnie's boat, sitting in the middle of a cove.
At the diner, Shirley (Jessica Gunning), having lunch with Markus (Darren Boyd), notes to Elena who is serving them, that Elena had been teaching Carrie to swim and that now she's gone missing with her dad. Markus points out Carrie is friends with Liam and the police should be looking at Frank as he is violent and unstable. He points out Frank was in Afghanistan, where terrible things happen. Elena says terrible things happen in Fortitude, too.
Eric brings the bloody shirt to the station and asks Petra to test if the blood is animal or human. Eric tries to radio Dan but Dan and Frank have stepped off their launch and boarded Ronnie's boat. Dan hears a noise, goes into the closed wheelhouse, and is surprised by Carrie's rabbit. The father and daughter are not on board.
Ronnie and Carrie hike to an outdoor kennel where huskies are being kept. She asks him how he is going to get money for Norway if he can't get back into the house. He said he will find something to sell for the money. They enter a small shed next to the kennel and Carrie tells Ronnie she is scared. He lights a stove and asks her to make dinner. He tells her when he gets back, he will have brought back something marvelous.
Jason goes to Natalie's (Sienna Guillory) lab and says the police let him go, no charges were filed because he was with Ciaran up until he went to meet her, and thus has nothing to do with Stoddart's death. Natalie says Ronnie attacked Ciaran so they think Ronnie did it. He sees the tooth and Natalie tells him she was asked to examine it by Hildur and Morton. She confirms it IS a mammoth tooth, and carbon dating puts it at 32,000 years old. She asks where he found it, and Jason thinks what she really wants to ask is, is there more of it, and he adds, if there was, how much is it worth to her. Rattrey (Luke Treadaway) walks in and Jason mocks him as Badger Boy. Natalie reminds Jason that such remains would have to be turned in to the Institute, but Jason points out that's only if they were found in Fortitude. Jason claims the tooth has been in his uncle's house for 20 years - he was in the merchant navy and sailed the world picking up shit like the tooth. He says people think what they want when there's profit and glory in it.
At the same time, in her office, Hildur is packaging Stoddart's EIR for mailing. Trish barges in and says Hildur should not have taken the report because Stoddart was going to rewrite it. Hildur, playing dumb, asks how she would have known that, and Trish says she knows Hildur listened to Stoddart's voice mail, and then deleting it. Hildur, feigning concern, says Trish should see Dr. Allerdyce (Phoebe Nicholls) as it's clear she hasn't been getting enough sleep. Defiantly, Trish tells her Morton knows about Hildur. Hildur, pretending she is hurt by the apparent threat, says she would scrap the hotel and the whole town if it would bring Stoddart back. Trish, unmoved, repeats that Hildur deleted the voice message, and leaves.
Jason goes to check on the locks at the mammoth shed. When he leaves, Ronnie sneaks around the corner and enters. He saws at the remains with a hacksaw.
Still searching for Ronnie, Frank confronts Dan about his attitude. Dan tells Frank his infidelity with Elena is getting in the way of his job, and damaging his family. Frank says it's none of Dan's business. They head back into town.
Carrie is finishing up dinner when Ronnie returns, carrying one of the mammoth tusks. He tells her it's made of ivory and worth lots of money. Ronnie explains to Carrie that something bad happened - a man was hurt - and although he did not do it, the police will think he did because the perpetrator was a friend of Ronnie's. He says this means the police will try to separate him and Carrie. He reminds her he did not handle things well when her mother died, and they wanted to put Carrie in foster care. Ronnie promises that he will never let that happen to her.
Dan and Frank pull into dock. While Frank is tying up the boat, Eric comes by and tells Dan about the shirt and that Petra is still testing it. Dan says he knew Frank was lying to him and takes off in the car, telling Eric to keep Frank at the dock. Dan storms into the station and Petra tells him it is human blood. Eric comes back to the station and tells Dan he couldn't keep Frank and that Frank went to the hotel. Dan runs to the hotel and busts into Elena's room. Dan runs into the bathroom where Frank is showering and beats him bloody. Elena stops Dan. Morton, who was down the hall, and Petra look on from the hallway. Dan leaves.
