Warning: Spoilers
I loved this show. It was really good. It was fun show. It had great chemistry, characters, characters development, plot and storyline too it. I liked when the dude found out the person he liked was a guy he decide that he didn't care and keep on loving him. The dude who was looking like a girl part of the time didn't loved the dude until the end. This was a good anime. The romance was great. There chemistry was great. I highly recommend this anime to all ages.

The characters in this show are the main factor
Mysterygeneration15 January 2024
The characters in this show are probably the main factor that made it enjoyable for me and what it does effectively. To be honest, I liked having practically every character in this episode. Izumi, the more feminine figure in the relationship and the youngest of a family of renowned entertainers, is the first of the two protagonists. Although his family is greatly concerned about his lack of skill, he has an ambition of becoming a manga artist. Izumi's amazing eyes have more to offer now that his character has grown during the program.

The story itself isn't all that remarkable, but that doesn't always mean a negative thing. Does it involve any risks? Not especially, but adequate for the goal the show is attempting to achieve (illustrating the interaction between the primary characters). Not to give too much away, but the program starts out as a typical romantic, practically love-at-first-sight romance before swiftly transitioning into a humorous story of a yaoi relationship. The most enjoyable aspect of it all is how funny it is. The characters' genuine chemistry is nearly as significant as the plot that the chemistry is trying to develop in the first place.

Okay, Love Stage. I would be lying if I said I didn't appreciate this show-this is the first yaoi show I've ever finished, and I don't think I'll be actively looking for more in the genre. There are only ten episodes in the show, and although this did not detract from its quality, I think the two extra episodes would have helped the show somewhat for reasons you will probably understand related to development. Still, I would suggest it.

So freaking cute!
Trixie_reviews25 November 2018
Considering this is a yaoi anime, I was surprised as to how cute it was. I actually liked it quite a lot. The artwork was stunningly beautiful, voice actors great, and the plot was very well-developed. I hope there will be a next season, someday. I would love to see it. Until then, I'm checking out the manga too. Recommended.

Brilliant anime that makes you cry, laugh and go awww
Irishchatter18 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I just really thought this anime series was absolutely great to watch. I just love the fact that the story is different from any other regular gay movies I've seen. I liked how the story goes as a little boy Sena was been made to dress up as a flower girl for a wedding commercial and making the other little boy Ryouma as the page boy fall in love with him without realising he's actually a boy. Then 10 years later they reunite, fall in love even more once things have settled down and became a couple.

I even liked the characters different personalities. I thought Sena was like this shy introvert guy who just dreams of getting ahead of himself into becoming a manga artist but is not giving himself enough credit . Heck I would love to hire him as a manga artist in my company! (if only I had one lol) Ryouma is such a chap who just wants love from Sena because he loves him dearly. Both were just such a cute couple. As for Rei and Shougo, Rei is so much like a father figure to both Shougo and Sena even if he's only looking after them as a manager while the parents are busy with their acting careers. With Shougo, he is like a brother who you wish you had, he is so sweet to his younger brother Sena, hes easy going and protective of his brother also. I never ever thought Rei and Shougo were ever going to become a couple in the end, they didn't even give you hints that they were about to be together at all! Seriously, it blew my mind but I was happy though, they are cute too!

Beautiful anime, brilliant voice actors, good music and the rest, 9/10 ^.^

Should've been a comedy but ended up just being creepy
colinbrackenridge3 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
At first it seemed like it was going to be a comedy as the concept seemed quite funny. Not only has Ryouma been in love with the same girl for 10 years that he only met briefly once when they were 8 years old, but he then finds out this girl is actually a boy. Instead of taking this down a more comedic route they decided to have Ryouma sexually assault Izumi, and throughout the hole show essentially groom him and brain wash him into having some sort of "feelings" towards him. Izumi is clearly just very confused and watching Ryouma take advantage of his unstable mental state just makes for a really creepy and gross viewing experience. And instead of Ryouma getting jail time like he deserves, Izumis family just kind of accept that Ryouma is a nice guy and should be trusted around Izumi. Over all its not a good show, only watch it if you want to get really creeped out.

Hilarious
jaysshukla20 September 2021
Ryoma is a popular young actor, , who fell in love with Izumi, thinking him to be a girl, when they co-starred in a commercial. Even after he finds out Izumi is a guy when they reunite, he is still unable to get over the fact that Izumi indeed is a boy.

What I like the most about this show is its humour. It is just as funny as the concept sounds. There is a scene in which Ryouma visits Izumi at his place to once and for all get the image of that 'girl' out of his mind and in order to do so he undresses him but Izumi's skinny body only gave him a more girly feeling. The scene was weird and funny at the same time. It was funny to watch their awkward but cute relation. The real charm of this anime. I never ever thought Rei and Shougo were ever going to become a couple in the end, they didn't even give a hint that they were about to be together at all! It was kind of a pleasant surprise(lol!).

I enjoyed this yaoi thoroughly. Must watch for Fujoshis and Fudanshis.

They handled it all wrong - and here is why
Falcon_of_Light15 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I had my reservations watching this anime, because in general I do not enjoy romance that much, regardless of gender. However, for lack of another anime to watch and because I felt I should probably give it a try, I started watching Love Stage!! ... and I was shocked. Especially after knowing how well it has been received by the public.

It starts out telling the story of introverted Otaku Izumi whose family is in the showbiz and pushes him into the same direction. When he was still a child, he had been dressed up as a girl for a wedding commercial because the original cast dropped out last minute. There, he met Ryouma who participated in the commercial as well. Fast forward ten years and now famous Ryouma tries to find the 'girl' from the commercial by insisting they should redo the commercial now showcasing the kids from then all grown up marrying themselves. And so it happens that Izumi has to play a girl once again without anyone else knowing he's actually a boy. And only after the commercial Ryouma discovers that his long term crush is actually...a boy. So far so good. We have conflicting feelings in both main characters for very understandable reasons.

-- NOW POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD --

Some time after the incident, Ryouma visits Izumi at his place to once and for all get the image of that 'girl' out of his mind. He waits there for Izumi while Izumi's parents and guardian leave and then when Izumi arrives, Ryouma starts chasing him and undressing him, supposedly to make sure that he's really a boy so that he will no longer have to think about him. This alone is quite disturbing because the feeling of having your clothes violently ripped off by some creep isn't all that romantic. But it gets worse. Upon seeing Izumi's naked chest Ryouma does not feel the revulsion he hoped for and instead pins Izumi down and starts sexually assaulting him! Yes, indeed. While Izumi is crying and begging him to stop. If his older brother hadn't shown up to forcefully stop Ryouma, who knows what would have happened. So the situation is the following: a so far straight, eighteen year old introvert who has never even kissed before has been sexually harassed by a guy in his own home. Izumi then proceeds to hide out in his room without eating anything or going to school, naturally because of the trauma that incident has caused.

He finally opens up to his guardian, Rei, and asks him whether it is normal for a guy to feel aroused when touched intimately by another guy - and Rei says that of course it is, it cannot be helped. After that, Izumi feels better. Clearly he felt like a sick person for feeling aroused during such an assault. And I believe this is what most rape victims also have to deal with, this feeling of disgust about themselves for having their bodies respond in a way their mind truly does not want to. And even though Ryouma apologizes afterwards and wants to make it up, I find this is not acceptable. It does not explain nor justify him assaulting Izumi and it doesn't matter that he's feeling insecure and conflicted about having feelings for a guy. It made me truly angry that the show then proceeded to deepen their bonds as friends when one counterpart seemed to have serious issues with respecting personal boundaries and intimacy.

In a scene where Ryouma helps Izumi out finishing his manga and Izumi eventually falls asleep, Ryouma repeatedly kisses him. Romantic? I think not. Izumi told Ryouma that they may start out as texting buddies but that's it. At that point in the story he did not reciprocate any of Ryouma's feelings. Ryouma was abusing the situation of Izumi being asleep. Another highly debatable action of his. I am not saying his character is bad, he seems like a nice enough guy, truly caring for Izumi. But that behavior has a strong undertone of abuse and harassment. Their friendship eventually becomes stronger and after Izumi was turned away by the publishing house because his manga was so bad, he ran away from home and visited Ryouma's place in the hopes to stay there for a while- for lack of other friends or places to stay. Ryouma agrees and lets him sleep over. But the next day, Izumi tells Ryouma what happened and eventually Ryouma explains to Izumi that this situation is difficult for him, having Izumi sleep in his bed, while he's having those feelings for him. Izumi - still very down and now feeling guilty - tells Ryouma he may do with him what he pleases and lies down on his back, turning away his head and averting his eyes. But instead of assuring Izumi that it is ok and that he should not do anything he does not want to, he just takes advantage of the situation (again!!) and undresses Izumi, touching and kissing him. And Izumi? He lies there unresponsive, head turned away, crying. Yes... how very considerate and romantic. Seriously, by then I thought this show must be a joke. But instead they eventually made Izumi fall in love with Ryouma, accepting that his first love was a boy instead of a girl.

So, what should we take from that? Persistent sexual assault will eventually lead to a relationship? That attempted rape is fine? I mean, what the hell? How can you expect an eighteen year old virgin to not feel all confused after he had his first sexual experience with a guy who forced himself on him? This is wrong in so many ways and it made me terribly angry and sad, that apparently, the general public think this is ok as long as it happens between boys. If that is the case, then something is very, very wrong with our society. My rating will thus also be affected by this. While the animation is quite good and the soundtrack is decent, the story and its message are so repulsive that I cannot give anything above a 3. I am aware that this rating seems biased, but I cannot overlook the message of this anime that will be watched by adolescent viewers. Hence, my harsh judgement.

Last note: I am not a prude, not at all in fact. I have watched shows including sexually explicit scenes (very much so), showcasing various rape scenes. But there has never been any doubt that it was wrong. This anime however wants the viewer to believe that it's just part of the relationship and that the fact that Izumi eventually falls for Ryouma can explain everything away. This line of thinking deeply disgusts me, because it might blur the lines between what is acceptable and what is not even further, and it adds to the taboo of men speaking up when being assaulted.

If you love BL then this is for you!
Yurri! On Ice, Ouran Host Club, and many other wonderful shows are a great example of BL anime at it's highest. If your looking for a steamer, more blunt showing of BL than this is the anime for you!

Very realistic, very dark, very sweet

Warning: Spoilers
The only reason this show lost a star is because I feel a little guilty for loving it so much.

*you've had fair warning*

As someone that has been a victim of sexual assault while in a situation where my entire livelihood depended on my sweeping it under the rug, I can probably relate to this show better than most.

This show is also about guilty sexual desires - kinks - and how they develop.

Izumi has absolutely no sexual experience, his only experience with love is with an anime character. He gets sexually assaulted {and as far as those situations go, it was actually tamer than it could have been as it was stopped just above the knee (thus why it was alluded to be a mosquito of an assault)} as his first encounter almost immediately after he was put into a confused state about his first kiss (with the same guy). Ryouma had been convinced that he was perfectly straight his entire life and went to immediately slam that closet door as hard as he could due to past trauma (yes, in a rude way) upon finding out that the girl he's fantasized about for a decade is actually a very pretty boy - he was as confused as Izumi. However, upon his acceptance of his infatuation not fading despite how hard he tried to make those feelings go away (like I said, he tried to slam that closet door), he quite literally begs for forgiveness while prostrating himself.

A great deal of people seem to want to attack Ryouma for being a "stalker" while forgetting that Izumi is an adult that doesn't say "no" and will use Ryouma when convenient (he also only ever text him a bunch and tried to meet him at school, he never went to his home until Izumi asked him too after the assault). Neither of these things are good, but this is a show about two damaged kids that grew up in the entertainment industry, it's gonna be dark. Izumi helps Ryouma move past the sexual assaults he experienced from managers as a child struggling in the industry and Ryouma helps Izumi to open up, start embracing the life he has, and to reach for the things he wants in life - one of those things just happens to be Ryouma.

People also want to rag on Izumi's brother and manager for "sweeping" the assault under the rug - their livelihoods depended on it! Yes, it's messed up, but the brother stopped the assault before anything too serious happened and only helped the guy to apologize (it'd actually be nice if people prostrated themselves and begged for forgiveness after molesting someone, most will gaslight their victims). The manager went out of his way to find Izumi and Ryouma during that apology to make sure that Ryouma didn't pull anything again then didn't even know that Ryouma was alone with Izumi the following time until after the fact (he's a manager, not Izumi's mother. Plus, Izumi is technically an adult, albeit a young one).

This is a good watch, but you actually have to watch it from the right perspective, the character's perspectives. Also, remember that certain industries have a major dark side.

I definitely recommend giving it a watch as long you can watch from a point of understanding.

PS Why square brackets aren't allowed when it's the proper way to use parentheses within parentheses is beyond me, so excuse that.

I love it it was wonderful it made me feel so happy and fussy
luisbaez-214999 May 2023
Love Stage is a wonderful bl anime that captivated me from start to finish. The show is a perfect blend of comedy, romance, and drama, with engaging characters and a heartwarming storyline. The animation and voice acting are top-notch, bringing the characters to life in a way that is both realistic and endearing. The main love story between Izumi and Ryouma is beautifully developed, with plenty of sweet and touching moments that left me feeling warm and fuzzy inside. What I loved most about Love Stage is that it's a story about love that transcends gender and societal expectations, and celebrates the power of true love to overcome any obstacle. I highly recommend this anime to anyone looking for a heartwarming love story that will leave you feeling uplifted and inspired.

Not cute, just creepy.
bronaaaaaa10 September 2019
Okay so I have a couple of problems with this anime. First thing I will say is that the basic premise of 'boy falls in love as a child and they reunite' has the potential to be a cute story but this anime is not as PG as that.

(This part may contain slight spoilers) The main character of this anime Ryouma sexually assaults his love interest Izumi multiple times and everyone just seems to accept it? Ryouma forces Izumi to undress, proceeds to kiss him and fondle him until Izumis brother intervenes and initially Izumis brother tries to keep Ryouma away from his little brother (dealing with victims guilt) but eventually just decides Ryouma is a good guy? Anyways next Ryuoma and Izumi become friends and Ryuoma repetitively kisses an unconscious Izumi. Later in the series Izumi tells Ryuoma "to do as he pleases" with him and is visibly upset and uncomfortable and Ryuoma is delighted and proceeds to do so.

Personally I found the relationship creepy, and watching it progress wasn't satisfying as I wanted Izumi to stand up for himself and get away from Ryuoma.

The main two characters are not that likeable. The only characters that I found remotely interesting were Izumi's brother Shougo and the company manager Rey. I would have liked to see more about them, and their relationship rather than the main.

The animation was full of blank backgrounds, and instead of being artsy (like it seems to have been) it comes across as distracting.

I could continue to talk about the negative stereotypes it plays into about gender roles in gay relationships and the use of victims guilt to build a sexual relationship but this review is already too long and thought out for an anime that is the opposite.

thekhpro25 August 2022
It was so good. I'm not sure if I'm gonna watch anime again but this tv series was by far the best. Dub was op. Especially Izumi's. Ryoma is the hottest guy out there. Recommended 10/10.

"Look ma, no backgrounds!"
invisibleunicornninja23 June 2018
This show is pretty bad. I say this being gay, so its not homophobia that makes me dislike it. This show was made for straight females, not the LGBT+ community.

Animation - The visuals in this show are at best generic, and at worst not there. Very few scenes actually have backgrounds. This could be a stylistic choice, but honestly it comes off as lazy.

Plot - Its a romance. The only plot is the two "love interests" getting together. Why would a romance actually have a plot?

Audio - I watched this with the Japanese dub. Its not good. Honestly its pretty annoying.

Characters - The main love interest is honestly a terrible person. He's homophobic and obnoxious. There is a scene where he sexually assaults the protagonist (I only managed to watch around 2 episodes after that, so I don't know if he gets any kind of consequences from that, but I don't think he does). The two "romantic leads" play into heteronormative stereotypes and don't have any chemistry. Its honestly uncomfortable to watch. I don't see how they could possible get together after everything that happens at the beginning.
