A Promising Start
dramafreak4231 October 2014
Pilot episodes can be tough to judge a show by, especially in terms of the structure of the episode. Because so much has to be introduced and explained, the first episode may not be representative of the flow of the show down the line. However it is a good means of judging the characters, and on that front there's a lot of promise in "Constantine." The show follows the comic book character of the same name, an exorcist and battler of demons. At the start of the show he's checked himself into an asylum, not because he fears that the demons and spirits he sees aren't real, but just because he's desperate to forget them and he figures drugs and electro shock might do the trick. The universe has other plans though, and he's soon on the road to try and save the daughter of an old friend.

Matt Ryan definitely looks the part, but he also nails pretty much everything about the character. He's world weary, yet has a strong moral compass. You get the sense that he wishes he could just ignore the things he sees wrong with the world around him, but something inside him won't let him just walk away, and that annoys him. He's not out to impress anyone and yet maintains an effortless sort of swagger. He knows what he's confronting is dangerous, but he's also seen it all before. So he's flippant while still making the hazards seem genuine.

Another thing this show does well is make it clear that just knowing Constantine is practically a death sentence. Seriously, if you see this guy coming up to even say "hello," just run the other way. He means well enough, but the world he treads in is so dangerous and follows him everywhere he goes. It's something that's important to the character and how he operates and is well conveyed in this first episode.

The actual "case" he works in this episode isn't really anything special, but it's about what you'd expect in a pilot episode. It gets the job done in terms of showing the sorts of things he deals with, and it has enough moments that let the audiences in on why Constantine is the way that he is. The female character who he's protecting isn't much more than serviceable. Thankfully after the test screenings she was written out of planned future appearances. The way in which she's removed from the show is a touch ham-fisted and awkward, but it gets the job done and has her still fulfill the function she was going to be needed for.

Whether or not this will be worth tuning in for on a regular basis is going to largely hinge on the next couple of episodes. It's a world and a character worth spending time with, so the question is whether or not the stories being told are any good. And that is not yet entirely clear.

Great Portents
aegiswiz-accede28 October 2014
New series are always a nightmare to launch. What do you do, how do you hook viewers? Constantine does that by packing the first episode with a truck load of back-story and a crew of wheelbarrows hauling out portents, which is a very good start. I've already forgotten who airs this show, I'm sure my internet spies will shortly be sending me a warning which details my sins against that channel even though I watched it on their own website... but I think this one is a keeper. If it is ABC, of course it will be canceled. They hate success for the most part. If it is NBC, it stands a chance, if only because they can stack it between WWW wrestling episodes on the Syfy channel should ratings flounder. Give it a look. It may be the start of something pleasantly fun to watch. I certainly enjoyed it and had those dreadful feelings when occult demons are concerned.

A Dark Beginning.

"Non Est Aylum" is a great Pilot that furthermore improves DC's lineup of TV Shows. Although with some minor changes from the comics, Constantine is bound to get better as the show progresses.

Matt Ryan was remarkable as John Constantine. His accent fits his role and his attitude and personality is interesting. He clearly stole the show and gave a effortless performance. A better fit to the role than Keanu Reeves back in the 2005 movie. The whole atmosphere of the show is dark, creepy, mysterious and scary which fits the whole meaning of the show and the comics "(Hellblazer)". The demons in this story were really really scary caused by the great visuals in the episode. The visuals did a great job of showing us a world that is being dwelled by demons and other ghosts and it did not fail to scare me at certain points. Although even at a dark atmosphere, the fun and lightheartedness was present as well. Constantine was not all dark and rough to other people, he would leave some jokes from time and time and has an impending sassy attitude. The emotional part of the narrative was also seen at Constantine's past. The terrible incident that happened to Astra was also in the episode and added a great back story and development to Constantine.

Overall a dark and mysterious Pilot that will pave way to introduction of new characters. Constantine's darkness and mood can be seen in this show, and it will be sure to interest audience as it progress. +With Matt Ryan as a definitive Constantine, +Dark and mysterious atmosphere, +Fantastic Visuals to be sure to scare us, +Great overall story.

Verdict: 8.3/10

Ryan better than Reeves as Constantine. The series much better than the movie. Characterization more faithful to the comic

It seemed like a very good first chapter. After the disappointing movie, I have been able to verify that my vision of the comic was correct, and this version of the character marries better with the Delano and Ridgway comic book masterpiece.

Matt Ryan is Constantine, he is because of his geordie accent, he is because of his way of suffering the adventure, and he is because of his hair, yes yes, his hair ... and I don't know what illuminated man thought Keanu could speak like Constantine, suffer like Constantine, or even look like Constantine in his hair.

Lucy Griffiths, without doing the interpretation of her life, remembers those beautiful and enigmatic girls from Twin Peaks, and gives a touch of dynamism to the episode when she acts alongside Matt Ryan.

Good first chapter, let's hope things improve, at the moment very entertaining and with a better characterization than the movie of the same name.

Actors who look like other actors are in a show that reminds you of another show.

Weird looking Kate Beckinsale is being hunted by a demon. She meets weird looking Guy Pearce who's an exorcist and sometimes hangs out with weird looking Chris Rock - who's an angel. Weird Pearce also got a friend who kinda looks like the weird looking neighbour from the Grimm show. Anyways, there's some demonic stuff going on, weird Beckinsale is being hunted some more, and then there's a fight. It's all rather straight forward and the show doesn't really do anything for the genre. Kinda like Supernatural with British accents. Maybe the bigger plot will turn out to be good but for the time being I'm a little sceptical. Since I really like the genre I'll give it half a season to get its hooks in me.

Non Est Asylum
Prismark103 May 2020
An odd pilot as the following short lived series was retooled.

Strange thing happen to a young woman called Liv (Lucy Griffiths.) When she meets the mysterious John Constantine (Matt Ryan) who knew her father, she is introduced to the world of the supernatural.

Through a pendant she can see things just like her father. However a force is after Liv and it is electrifying. Constantine and his knowledge of the occult can save her.

The audience for the pilot are meant to follow Liv but she really was an uninteresting character. No wonder she was dropped or Griffiths opted not to return.

Matt Ryan makes Constantine interesting. Arrogant, moody, wisecracking. He is fun despite a backstory where a young girl has been damned because of a mistake Constantine made. This haunts him.

There are elements that is similar to shows like Supernatural. The battle with the demonic force was rather lame and Constantine nearly made a big mistake. You would have thought someone with his experience would know better.
