The opening scene is filmed at the Holocaust Memorial (das Holocaust-Mahnmal) in Berlin. The quote on the wall says:
"Ist der Holocaust ein Irrweg oder eine Spiegelung unseres selbst?" ("Is the Holocaust an aberration, or a reflection of ourselves?")
"Ist der Holocaust ein Irrweg oder eine Spiegelung unseres selbst?" ("Is the Holocaust an aberration, or a reflection of ourselves?")
In the flashbacks to the Sensates births, Will and Riley were clearly born facing the ceiling, and Sun, Lito, and Wolfgang's scenes are filmed in a way that suggests that they may have been as well. Only 5% of babies are born facing the ceiling (a position referred to as P.O.P., which stands for Persistent Occiput Posterior). It's a position that is significantly more likely to cause complications in birth, and many babies in this position are rotated manually before delivery.
Kala and Caphaeus meet for the first time in this episode. Up until this point, the only other Sensate that Kala had met was Wolfgang.
The orchestra plays Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major op. 73, I. Allegro at the end of the episode.
"What is Human?" Is the episode title and a line spoken by Jonas.
