A portrait of an abusive relationship
Prismark102 March 2016
Murdered by my boyfriend is based on true facts. The title actually gives the game away.

It is a harrowing drama especially when things get ugly. The drama is about a relationship between Ashley, a 17 year old college student who meets a slightly older boy Reece at a party. Reece is nice, charming and they both get together. That is day one of the relationship.

We see the couple at various points in the time-line, when Ashley gets pregnant she realises that Reece is a control freak. Always wanting to know what she is up to, trying to control her. Eventually Reece also becomes violent, lashing out on Ashley. Her friends discover bruises and she is reluctant to leave. The police are called but at first Ashley is reluctant to say anything.

When Ashley discovers that Reece might be cheating on her, he manages to manipulate things and spin it around leaving Ashley confused. Even when violent he seems to have power over her to keep her with him.

Eventually Ashley does throw him out but Reece gets more manic and still harasses her to no ends.

The final scenes are harrowing and Reece was sent to jail for 15 years which was increased later to 20 years.

The drama is well acted by Georgina Campbell and Royce Pierreson. The story was based on interviews with friends and family of the real life victim. It shows how women can be trapped in a spiralling circle where thy are reluctant to leave their partners because they are so emotionally traumatised and unable to make any of their own decisions because they have been so manipulated. Even if they leave they are still stalked and harassed.

A Victim's Story
Foutainoflife25 November 2018
This movie tries to demonstrate the horrors of domestic violence in a subdued manner. There is nothing to graphic being shown but you get the gist of what is happening. Not a bad movie. It's just sad that a woman of promise, with dreams, a child and friends was taken from this world by a man who is an insecure bully. Love shouldn't hurt. Love shouldn't make you feel less than who you truly are. Love should be an embrace, a shelter and a calm you can turn to when life gets rough. Don't settle for less than being treated with respect, dignity and honor.

Tragic
lolly6710 August 2021
I have never been physically abused, but I try and understand why most don't/won't/leave. I think this unfortunate true story was well done. As usual, in my opinion, nothing is done by the police until after the abused is killed. This has been what I've seen in my 50+ years of life. I am extremely sad, and angry, that such a beautiful, loving, vivacious woman had her life cut short. My prayers are with her daughter and family. I keep praying one day this cycle can be stopped.

Amazingly acted, horrible and upsetting

Warning: Spoilers
Such a horrific story, I just simply can't understand why someone would be so horrible and abusive to someone that carried there child and was so defenceless. This wasn't only horrible and upsetting but terrifying, terrifying because it actually happened and every minute I was scared something else would happen, I was so upset about the child, thanks to the farther the child now has to grow up with no parents, makes me sick and upset, but beautifully betrayed and I don't think the dad got what he deserves

Ok but could have been better
laurie_191022 August 2019
My mom put this film on for me after escaping a horrific relationship. I think its a very interesting film, but could have been better. I think its a bit clumsy at times. The film could have explored more of the psychological abuse, coercive control etc, though it did touch on gaslighting somewhat. Great acting though, it cannot be faulted.

Heartbreaking
banemetd16 November 2021
A truly heartbreaking and true story of a young girl who loved the wrong man. Beautifully written and acted. Georgina Campbell gave a very well deserved Bafta performance as Ashley who gave her heart to Reece, magnificently played by Royce Pierreson, the very wrong man. The family of 'Ashley' were so brave in allowing her story to be told, which is being shown to young people to help educate them to the dangers of coercive, controlling and ultimately lethal relationships. Brave and truly heartbreaking 💔

IT TOOK FOUR YEARS FOR ASHLEY TO DIE
StudleyDave4 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A truly harrowing, sickening tale of predatory control and manipulation initially masquerading as love and affection. The relationship very quickly becomes one of violence in addition to the already established control and coercion, with the stranglehold tightening with every incident, with every argument, and with each increasingly violent act. There are some interesting, inspired utterances throughout Ashley's narration which talk of the experience of domestic abuse as being defined as holding on to hope, rather than being about weakness or strength which it is so often made out to be. It isn't as easy or as straightforward as leaving the abusive partner/party. I feel sickened, sad, angry, and guilty having watched this, as a reminder of any argument I've ever had, of anytime I've caused pain or suffering to another person, of anytime I may have been able to make a difference, but didn't. I feel guilty for being a male in a world where non-males are predated on. This is exceptionally well acted by Georgina Campbell, and is written in a manner of understanding and discernment, but with the willpower to be ugly, revealing, stark, and horrifying. I'm now going to take a long walk outside in the glorious Winter sunshine, and be mindful of the goodness in life.

educational very realistic

Warning: Spoilers
Yes very true portrayal of domestic violence or toxic relationships. he had exact signs that repeat in every insecure abusive man. jealousy, control and manipulation. unfortunately violence only escalates never goes away. the tragic end is difficult but it could have been avoided by having better support (where was her family?) or maybe they were also a reason for her part of the toxic dance, lack of self-esteem keep going back for more beatings. where is the self-preservation instinct ? it could have saved her life. Julia Roberts in sleeping with the enemy made it alive. She was no victim.

Brilliant to watch but so sad!
jadebay-0205013 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The acting in this was brilliant! You really got the feel of each character. Just to see something so nice and innocent at the beginning and how she thought she knew him to how quickly things changed and the true colours showed but she was too late as she was pregnant and then had his child so there was no way to get away from him as he kept wanting to see the daughter. The violent scenes even in the shop in public when he beat her was shocking. To see how she tried to move on but yet again he still had a hold of that as guys didn't want to go near her because of him. The obsessiveness and controlling side is shocking but does show this happens as was based on a true story as even at the end it showed how long he got in prison which personally I felt was not as long enough. This is to show people that it happens even now and how scary it can be but sadly this was the outcome to this case. It was emotional to watch.
