The Nation's Favourite Motown Song
jboothmillard4 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Motown was a famous American hit making record company and studio in America, you could also argue it as a style of music, with the most successful songs released between the late 1950s until the late 1970s, but they do still exist. I was most interested to watch this documentary, both an interesting look at how Motown started and progressed throughout the 20th century and onwards, and a countdown show, counting down the greatest songs from the Motown history, in the genres of pop, R&B, soul, jazz, hip hop, rock, country and more, with the results voted by the public. The songs in the list are: "Jimmy Mack" – Martha and the Vandellas (1967), "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" – Stevie Wonder (1966), "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" – The Temptations (1972), "What's Going On" – Marvin Gaye (1971), "My Cherie Amour" – Stevie Wonder (1969), "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" – The Four Tops (1965), "My Guy" – Mary Wells (1964), "The Track of My Tears" – Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (1969), "Reach Out I'll Be There" – The Four Tops (1966), "I Want You Back" – The Jackson 5 (1970), "Stop! In the Name of Love" – The Supremes (1965), "War" – Edwin Starr (1970), "Baby Love" – The Supremes (1964), "I'll Be There" – The Jackson 5 (1970), "The Tears of a Clown" – Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (1970), "My Girl" – The Temptations (1964), "Dancing in the Street" – Martha and the Vandellas (1964), "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" – Diana Ross (1970), "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" – Jimmy Ruffen (1966), and a good number one with "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" – Marvin Gaye (1969). Other songs mentioned in the programme were: "War" – The Temptations, "You Can't Hurry Love" – The Supremes (1966), "Where Did Our Love Go" - The Supremes, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" – Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell (1967) and "Smile" – The Isley Brothers. Narrated by Craig Charleswith contributions from Shelley Berger, Aloe Blacc, Tony Blackburn, Michael Bolton, Dennis Coffey (Funk Brother), Lamont Dozier, Abdul 'Duke' Fakir (The Four Tops), Wilton Felder, Gabrielle, Cornelius Grant, Dayna Hartwick (The Funk Brothers), Eddie and Brian Holland, Ivy Jo Hunter, Tito Jackson, Ronan Keating and Shane Lynch (Boyzone), Beverly Knight, Huey Morgan (Fun Lovin' Criminals), James Morrison, John Newman, Mica Paris, Suzi Quatro, Martha Reeves, Paul Riser, Smokey Robinson, Beatriz Staples, Angelo Star (Edwin's son), William 'Mickey' Stevenson, Dionne Warwick, Pete Waterman, Adam White (Motown historian), Otis Williams (The Temptations) and Mary Wilson (The Supremes). Very good!
