A combination of commercial and independent films directed by Wong Kar Wei
rfei-5688231 December 2023
If you want to look for the atmosphere of "In the mood for love" or "2046" in " Blossoms Shanghai", you will be much disappointed.

" Blossoms Shanghai" is a combination of fast tempo and storyline of Wong Kar Wei's first successful commercial movie "As tears go by" in 1988, and the aesthetics and production value of independent films "In the move for love" and "2046." The right way to watch " Blossoms Shanghai" is that you just forget this is a TV series directed by Wong, it just a TV series of business wars in stock market, commercial trading, the Shanghai most luxurious restaurant street, and the hero's love affairs with three women, blending in a lot of comedic flavors directed by another director. Then you can really enjoy this TV series.

Because there will be a movie version for " Blossoms Shanghai"," I really hope that Wong can re-edit this TV series for movie version with the atmosphere of "In the mood for love" or "2046," thus fulfill the expectations of Wong's original fans!

A fancy visual feast

Warning: Spoilers
It was the first time I found the beauty of TV shows in such an emotional and historical series.

I thought it was an old story about citizen people in the first place, but I changed my review after seeing the first show.

This show contains many features, such as famous people/commerce/encouragement/emotion and the history of the end of the 20th century.

I was admiring the judgement of famous people that made sense to the future, appreciating the brilliant humanities shown by these people at the same time.

The most important view of the series was that it wanted to tell me it was brave to overcome difficulty. Because it is normal for everyone to meet challenges on the road, and polishing your eyes to have friends.

Amidst tangled emotions with three women, every frame is a breathtaking and beautifully portrayed moment.

"Blossom Shanghai" emerges as a stellar work in the Chinese television arena, establishing a high bar that may not be surpassed for generations. This drama, which took a decade of careful planning and four years to produce, showcases an exceptional level of detail and dedication. The production's fidelity to Shanghai's past is demonstrated through the extensive recreation of its historic streets, bringing a sense of nostalgia to life.

The drama boasts a cinematic quality that competes with that of major motion pictures, captivated by an enchanting allure. It pays homage to the distinctive style of Wong Kar Wei, with select scenes delicately nodding to his previous works. The soundtrack complements this, harmonizing exquisitely with the unfolding story.

Featuring a cast of Shanghainese actors speaking their native dialect, the drama offers an authentic slice of the city's culture. This linguistic authenticity renders it essential viewing for anyone drawn to the nuances of Shanghai's language and heritage.

The actors' heartfelt performances reflect a deep-seated reverence for their city, with Wong and his colleagues delivering a rich, respectful tribute to their urban roots. Even with occasional missteps, as seen in episodes such as the 26th, the series maintains its position as an influential and defining piece of television.

Critics are encouraged to look beyond the surface to appreciate the complex undertones of the drama. Wong's narrative does not simply praise the government; rather, it subtly critiques through layers of sophisticated irony. The name of "Blossom" as the title is telling, evoking contemplation about the fleeting nature of Shanghai's past affluence and what the future, whether promising or ominous, holds.

Blossoms Shanghai unfolds as a tapestry woven with the intricate threads of Shanghai's economic boom, skillfully capturing the kaleidoscope of daily life within this bustling metropolis. Drawing inspiration from the city's economic surge, the drama delves into the nuanced tapestry of the human experience amid prosperity's wave.

The series offers a compelling glimpse into the myriad stories that unfold against the backdrop of Shanghai's economic renaissance. From the hustle of street markets to the high-rises that pierce the skyline, every frame echoes the pulse of the city. While the narrative isn't flawless, it excels in its portrayal of the various facets of Shanghai's societal kaleidoscope.

One commendable aspect is the authentic representation of everyday life during this transformative period. The characters, with their dreams, struggles, and triumphs, serve as relatable vessels navigating the currents of change. The Blossoms Shanghai manages to bridge the gap between the macrocosm of economic development and the microcosm of individual lives.

Positive online reviews echo the sentiment, praising the series for its realistic portrayal and character-driven narrative. Viewers applaud its ability to humanize the grand narrative of economic growth, making it accessible and emotionally resonant. The drama, despite its imperfections, has struck a chord with many, becoming a noteworthy addition to the genre.

While some critics point out pacing issues and occasional narrative hiccups, the overall consensus highlights the show's commendable effort in bringing to life the myriad stories that make up the fabric of Shanghai's economic evolution. In the grand tapestry of dramas, Blossoms Shanghai may not be flawless, but it stands out as a sincere and compelling exploration of life in the midst of economic transformation.

That's Wong Karwei!
yangwang-4381212 January 2024
Beneath the business battle and loving affairs, it is still Wong's poet about time and love. Amazing cameras languages as usual which is characteristic of his work. It is pure enjoyment to feel the the exquisite dynamics he used to convey the mood or emotions. Besides, the Shanghainese version just feels better than the mandarin version. I don't mind watching the subtitles as some of the local cultural flavors can only be best presented with the local dialect. Some comedian tricks added more colors to the series and made it more audience friendly. This is a beautiful piece of art. A gift and memorial to Shanghai.
