Introducing: Sailor Mars!
Amari-Sali4 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
With Rei's introduction I think a darker, and less silly, tone will definitely be used throughout the series. For while Usagi is still the goofy, scatterbrain girl she was in the original, both Ami and Rei seem less comical and like they have insecurities, among other issues. But, with that said, let's go into the episode!

Topic 1: Trouble in the Dark Kingdom - Jadeite

With Jadeite failing twice now, two of the other 4 kings appear. One being Zoisite and the other being Nephrite. Both who are ready to make up for Jadeite's failures, but with Jadeite still wanting to compete for the favor of Beryl and their lord, he doesn't step aside to let the other kings try. Though, from what it seems, Beryl grows tired of his failures and he may get the boot in a few episodes.

Topic 2: Who's That Girl - Rei

Our third consecutive scout is introduced this episode and in comparison to the original there are changes to show more of Rei such as her grandpa being cut altogether, a stronger focus on her being the shrine maiden, and cutting the demon bus driver villain for Jadeite. All of which allows us to see the darker side to Rei's life before becoming a sailor scout. Which, I should note, isn't as sad as Ami's, since Rei gets more people interaction, but it does have a far heavier tone than the original Sailor Moon.

Topic 3: Battle in Beryl's Castle - Rei & Usagi

Leading to the topic of how Rei gets introduced to the scouts. You see, with Jadeite being embarrassed twice by Sailor Moon, and then Sailor Mercury, he decides to take over a bus line and kidnap people to draw them out. And when he takes Rei he ends up getting just what he asked for. Thus leading to Sailor Moon, and eventually Sailor Mercury, teleporting to Queen Beryl's castle for a battle. Now, why would Jadeite bring them there of all places? Well, I can only assume he planned on bringing their carcasses directly to Beryl when done. Though considering where they fight within her palace, and all of them are using destructive powers, it seemed like a weird place to stage a battle to me.

My thoughts aside, as usual with this show, Usagi spends most of the battle being useless until someone assists her, and with Ami only being able to make a mist at this point, her powers are sort of useless against someone as powerful as Jadeite. But, being that Jadeite's powers deal with ice, he is of no match to Rei with her fire powers. And, magically out of thin air, Luna throws Rei her transformation pen and after Usagi traps Jadeite with her tiara, Rei hits him with her attack. He doesn't die though, he escapes and leaves the guardians in Beryl's castle.

And despite us seeing the only way into Beryl's castle being through the bus Jadeite used, it seems the sailor guardians, and all the people Jadeite kidnapped, are somehow brought back safe and sound. And despite now seeing where the enemy is, and who they maybe, there is no talk about hunting him down for their focus is finding the princess and the silver crystal. Ending the episode with another apparent change which comes in the form of Rei and Usagi not being at each other's throats as the credits begin.
