Veteran film producer and financier Bill Johnson, co-founder and co-chairman of Lotus Entertainment, and fashion stylist Leah Forester, a cast member on the short-lived 2016 Bravo reality series “There Goes Motherhood,” splashed out $9.7 million for a clean-lined architectural villa in Pacific Palisades, Calif., with positively cinematic views up and down the coastline from Palos Verdes to Malibu. Sequestered down a private, dead-end lane on two parcels that together span almost half of an acre, the approximately 3,500-square-foot residence is equipped with state-of-the-art sound, lighting and security systems and contains four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms over three floors.
Discreetly tucked behind a muscular, exposed concrete wall next to a two-car car-port, the top floor entry leads to a light-filled, open-plan living, dining and kitchen space with cerused wide-plank white oak hardwood floors and a vaulted ceiling. At one end of the room, the sleekly appointed kitchen features smooth-paneled Hawaiian koa wood cabinetry and...

The plight of elephants has inspired a number of movies in recent years, including two similarly titled documentaries released just last month: “Ivory: A Crime Story” and Netflix’s “The Ivory Game.” Indiewire’s Anne Thompson has received word that Jessica Chastain is set to produce a drama based on the true story of the Black Mambas, an all-female group who combat poaching in South Africa.

The as-yet-untitled film will be written by the “Walking Dead” star and “Eclipsed” playwright Danai Gurira. Chastain is, of course, best known for her acting work — a two-time Academy Award nominee, she most recently appeared in this summer’s “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” and will next be seen in “Miss Sloane” — though this isn’t her first time producing. She served that role on “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby,...

Jessica Chastain can be seen on the big screen this December with one of her most ferocious performances to date in “Miss Sloane,” but she’ll be dialing back on the ruthlessness next year for “The Zookeeper’s Wife.” Adapted from Diane Ackerman’s bestselling novel, the non-fiction drama stars Chastain as Antonina Żabińska, a Polish woman who helped aid in the protection of Jews during World War II by hiding them in the Warsaw Zoo. Her efforts were supported by her husband and zoo director, Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh).

The new political drama “Miss Sloane” premiered this past Friday at the AFI Festival in Los Angles and the first set of reviews are finally trickling out. The film stars Jessica Chastain as Elizabeth Sloane, a ruthless political lobbyist who goes up against the gun lobby and discovers she’s up against the most powerful opponent of her life. Critics have so far given the film mixed reviews, but leave room to compliment Chastain’s performance.

IndieWire’s own David Ehrlich gave a mixed review, saying that it “spirals so far from reality that its farfetchedness becomes its own sad commentary on the current state of things,” especially in the immediate wake of a Trump presidency. “As a film pushing for less corruption in politics, it’s far too soapy to feel credible. As...

Well “Miss Sloane” certainly picked an interesting weekend to make its world premiere. A barnstorming political thriller about a fiercely intelligent woman who breaks men over her knee and brings Washington D.C. to heel, the latest film from “Shakespeare in Love” director John Madden may have been conceived as a story of empowerment, but in the wake of President-Elect Donald J. Trump. it can’t help but feel like a feminist fantasy from a more hopeful time when the glass ceiling seemed ready to shatter into 160 million tiny pieces — a time that I like to call “last Monday.”
But maybe that will change. Maybe tomorrow — after the smoke clears and our anger coalesces into action — this fierce, over the top, and wholly entertaining saga of lobbyists run amok won’t be seen as a nostalgic throwback so much as a cautionary tale about what’s to come.

While DC and Marvel are making huge waves with their recent cinematic announcements, it's easy to forget that there's some independent comic properties in the works in the movie industry as well. Case in point is the Soska Sisters' planned adaptation of Painkiller Jane, a film based off of the 1995 comic of the same name. What particularly sets a franchise like Painkiller Jane apart from typical Marvel Comics fare is the fact that it's a series that's very open with profanity, violence, and sexuality. According to the Soskas, that's not going to be toned down one bit. Crave Online caught Jen and Sylvia Soska at New York Comic Con last weekend, and they had quite a bit to say about how their fast tracked adaptation is going to try and bust down the walls of impediment for every other comic book heroine out there. When espousing the importance of keeping...
