Not sure what I was looking at
grrrrrgirlk-894-53133924 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
While it was okay, half the time I couldn't make out what half the props were in this movie. I would have rated it higher if I understood the ending. Who were the people at the picnic table? Who was the little girl? Who got killed? And who were they killed by? Really? I can't find this explanation anywhere. This is the 4th movie I had to go search online for an explanation of the ending. Do writers not care about endings? It dragged for a bit then late in the game the killings started around the B&B. And when they came, they came fast. How did the short haired chick survive a gunshot among other things to get to the last girl? And where did the hammer come from? Hmm. Too many questions while watching this.

Not for the queasy
Pairic11 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Bastard: A killer couple hammer to death a motorist who stops to help them then kill a nosy attendant at a gas station. Another young couple, semi-runaways take to the road and are picked up by murderous duo. Arriving at a small town they see the local sheriff asleep on a lawn; hes involved in a troubled gay relationshp.

Little do they know that a psycho-killer is already at work in the area. We are talking real horror here: decapitation, spines being ripped out, ad hoc C-Sections. Not for the queasy. 6/10.

Murder in the isolated mountain town
TheLittleSongbird29 March 2018
A creepy cover. One of the best concepts for any low-budget film seen recently in my "low-budget film quest for curiosity sake". An appreciation for the film's genre. Reasons enough to check this out and had real potential to be somewhat of a guilty pleasure.

The good news is that the concept for this is nowhere near as wasted as those for other films seen recently, having seen my fair share of frustrating wastes of good potential with failed execution. Compared to other recent viewings for low-budget films, this is oddly enough, despite the lacklustre rating, one of the better and more watchable ones. Not a great, or even good, film by any stretch. Not a terrible one either, it left me frustrated at how it didn't do enough with what potential it showed but at least it didn't leave me angry.

It starts off well, with a startling, effectively creepy opening that is one of the film's most inventive scenes. There is effort at making some of the characters interesting, parts are creepy and suspenseful in the first part and there are a few brutally inventive kills.

My intelligence at least wasn't insulted anywhere near as much as other recent film viewings, it didn't get excessively stupid and the location was an atmospheric one.

Sadly not matched in the less than slick way it was shot and edited. It is unfortunate that the promising start and what made it so isn't maintained in the rest of the film. The further the film got, the suspense dissipated and the sillier, duller and more predictable it became. Too many of the kills are too ordinary, no matter the over-the-top gratuitous in quality and excessive in quantity gore and violence was.

Things did start to become confusing in the latter stages and not all the characters worked, with not enough done to make one care for them. The male serial killer was interesting, however the female one did irritate and the cop was basically pointless melodrama. There is nothing natural about the dialogue or interactions, insipid stuff awkwardly delivered. The acting is at best lacklustre, while the killer is far too obvious and the ending is so incoherent and what the heck that it brings the film down significantly.

Overall, started off well but goes downhill too early and never recovers. 4/10 Bethany Cox

One Bastard of a Movie
dcarsonhagy18 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
"After Dark" has made some very decent trips into the horror genre. This is not one of those trips.

"Bastard" opens with a man picking up a girl staring out into space while (I suppose) her companion works on something. The girl has the personality of a fence post. As it turns out, the two companions are actually just married and are also serial killers. They off the man, steal his car, and go in search of their next victims. Cut to a scene where a boy and girl are leaving wherever it is they live. Turns out the girl pukes a lot (there is a very obvious reason for this) and they are picked up by the serial killers. Add to the mix a seriously messed up suicidal policeman (and cross dresser), and there are the main actors in this movie.

After a throwaway scene, the two couples are directed to (and arrive at) a bed and breakfast, unaware that a serial killer also lurks around those parts. It takes a while for the movie to get to this plot line, so I don't know if there is enough to hold anyone's attention up to this point.

I won't go any further into any detail; you'll just have to suffer like I did. The graphic gore doesn't really start until their arrival, and then it just seemed like it was violence-for-violence's sake. And if you cannot figure out who the killer is, you need to turn in your Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys badges because, yes, it's THAT obvious.

This is one of the few "After Dark" movies that did not work on any level, as far as I was concerned. The infamous Swiss cheese script, characters no one cares about, and a laughable ending. C'mon on After Dark; you can do MUCH better than this.

Rated R for graphic violence and language.

After Dark Films...
Krackoon23 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
'After Dark Films' is known to be a breeding ground for really bad films - and the 2015 collection doesn't help their case whatsoever.

'Bastard' is about a group of really... interesting people being stalked by, well, the least screwed up individual in the film - two newlywed serial killers, two socially awkward runaways, one suicidal/cross dressing/homosexual cop. If you can get by the worst collection of characters in any film so far this year, you'll probably struggle to get through some of their performances. Ellis Greer, who plays the female serial killer, is probably the worst actor/actress in the bunch. She's a snarling, nasty, foul beast - and that's her most tolerable moments in the film. Dan Creed hams it up, as her better half, but he's simply not there yet, as an actor. The newlywed killers should have been the stand outs in this film, because who wouldn't want to see a showdown between three psychopaths? It simply wouldn't have worked with this cast, though.

As the film rolls on, you start to sympathize with the masked mad man, because he has to put the effort into trying to rid his town of these horrible characters. You also start to consider that maybe one of these people will end up sporting the mask - a twist that you'll hope doesn't exist, because he/she will have to pull off the whole revealing climax scene, that no actor in the film is capable of doing. You won't have long to wait before all is revealed, and your fear turns into reality. Actually, the reveal is about midway, giving you an early out, if you wish to do so - and you probably will. I'm ashamed to say, I made it through the entire film.

Random Ramblings of a Madman: When I first heard about 'Bastard,' I was hopeful for a solid slasher film, but when I saw the words 'After Dark,' hope turned to despair. It's a complete mess, and should not have been released.

Title makes it sound like an exploitation piece....it's not..
FlashCallahan8 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
So we have a winner for the most hilarious title of a film this year. A film with that title would have usually been associated with Brian Bosworth, or some old western film starring Charles Bronson, or any actor from that era who would suit the word 'grizzled'....

But this film features newlywed, hitch-hiking serial killers, a brother and sister on the run, and a suicidal, alcoholic cop.

Of course, they get caught in an increasingly bizarre series of murders committed by a masked killer near a mountain-town bed and breakfast....

It's another one of those very deceptive horror films that have numerous 'favourable' review highlights on the cover of the DVD, stating things like 'it's the best retro slasher this week!', or 'scarier than death...literally'.

If you've seen a lot of horror films, especially those that are of a low budget and cost less than £8.00 in your local supermarket, you know that you should take these quotes with a huge pinch of salt and lower your expectations.

But when a film has this title, you cannot help but keep those expectations high, and hope for once, that someone has made a nostalgic reference to those wonderful stalk 'n slash films of the eighties.

This isn't it, and because it's trying to homage so many different films, it gets lost in it's own convolutions.

Every character is suspect, but there are ones who are just that little bit more creepy, having strange traits, or saying inappropriate things so they are obviously red herrings, but it's fun to see the writers of the film think they can fool the viewer.

Aside from the film being quite bizarre for no good reason, it does hold a few things you would associate with those films of the eighties, namely terrible acting and unnecessary nudity.

And that wonderful trope of people going to the wrong place at the wrong time, it's an age old problem that never seems to disappear from lazy writing.

But the ending, while it's supposed to be shocking and turn the narrative on it's head, you kind of guess that this was the case, as there is always the quiet couple who never really stray of the path, but it is quite amazing that the final shot is the rationale for the title.

So all in all, it's just another poorly made horror film, trying to disguise the fact by having the DVD cover look like the cover for 'Hatchet'.

Aside from the audacious ending, and a turn of events once they reach the cabin, it's pretty forgettable stuff.

You WILL Want To See This Film
jpp-9777722 February 2016
This movie IS what you want out of a horror film. Personally, I love discovering films that could one day be a horror cult classic. This is one of them!

There's twists, scares, gore, sex, comedy and a little bit of irony all rolled into one. As someone who has seen more than my fair of BAD horror movies, I can definitely tell you this is NOT one of them. I walked away very satisfied and would even sit through it again with friends. That's the kind of feeling you should want walk away from a movie with.

The acting is good, really good. The direction was on point. The death scenes were quick, but in a TCM kind of quick that made them seem a little more realistic. The characters also aren't all one dimensional teens that you root for to get killed off.

I just say, give the film a chance. It's not a masterpiece, but it isn't meant to be. It's meant to be fun (think Sleepaway Camp, kind of fun) and if your idea of fun is watching a good horror that can poke fun at itself with you, then you have found your afternoon flick!

An extended short movie...
capoca17 June 2020
...that does not work even for a second. The last 20 minutes are the best, if you can say so, but the first hour is unbearably boring. Terrible cast and direction. Avoid a waste of time!

Good film but what was the ending about!!
ArchieIsCool5 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
OK so I got this DVD and hoped it would be a good horror film, yes it was like at the start two hitch hikers hail down a car then this bit was unexpected the hitch hiker man just slams a hammer into the drivers head then proceeds to chop him up but you don't see it in full frame just his head and arm chopping him up. The female just waits for him to finish and they drive off, these two are newly married and are murderers. Next couple is a brother & sister leaving home and they are picked up by the murdering couple, they go into a bar and ask where could they get a room for the night, they're told where to go and meet the owner of the hotel and so next day they go on a hike with the owner so the killing begins and then you find out it's the owner doing the killing a woman. Then this is where I am confused you see the owner has a husband and she is Pregnant and there is a toddler then the man cuts the baby out and feeds it blood from its bottle, the owner kills him and then goes to one of the survivors tied up on a bed and showed her her nipples which looked weird, the survivor escapes and kills the owner. Why was a baby fed blood? I don't get it do they eat flesh like cannibals or what, if anyone can explain the ending I would love to know it. ,

Quite interesting slasher
kyleallencole921 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This gore-fest from After Dark films was pretty fierce. Quite a bit of strange characters throughout including Tonya Kay who played the psychopathic woman who ran the small mountain bed and breakfast. She murders people in the area and her crazed guests as well. The murderous newlywed couple were insane and the female runaway was the only decent character in the film. The others including the cop I couldn't wait to get killed off. Its revealed very early on that Tonya Kay is the lunatic here also. One very graphic killing takes place at a lake where a kinky couple get hacked by the masked killer with a meat cleaver. The woman has her head knocked off and the man has his back sliced open and his spine pulled out and snapped on half. The ending didnt quite make sense except that Tonya Kay has a mutant toddler that needs blood, so that's why she is resulting to killing people. They show her nipples which are all scarred up, most likely from breast feeding the mutant baby. I reccomend this very depraved film.

Unexpectedly Good
maclarenjohn25 November 2016
Gave this film a chance and was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. With a budget of $87,000 it was a lot better than many films with 100 times that budget. When you consider the amount of money some Hollywood films cost I bet the makers of Bastard must feel pretty proud of themselves. IMDb hasn't listed how much return was made on the expenditure but I hope they made a profit. I wont go into the details for fear of spoiling it for anybody reading this save to say there are plot twists and jumpy scares but also with an intelligence in the story. So give it a chance as I did. If you don't like it then at least its only 80 minutes long and if you do like it then good :-)

Bizarre, gory and disturbing. In other words, quite entertaining.
peterp-450-29871613 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"You should've killed him. Yeah, I know. But it's your turn."

At first sight "Bastard" is just another horror of the slasher genre. But with the eccentric characters and their strange behavior, one tries to depart from well-established patterns used in this genre. In the third part of the story they are trying to bring up a very crazy twist. Surprising? Yes. But in my eyes a bit exaggerated and too far-fetched. This was a minor disappointing aspect in "Bastard". The story-line was a bit exorbitant. The first time it was shocking. The next moment it felt pretty laughable.

Feel free to call "Bastard" in one breath weird, kooky, and richly overdone. So, if you're looking for a horror with lots of abnormalities, in such amount that you start to wonder if there's anyone sane playing in it, this film is the right thing. The atmosphere feels great from the beginning. A dusty road with two seemingly innocent, stranded tourists hitchhiking. Lets meet Hannah (Ellis Greer) and West (Dan Creed), a newlywed couple. Soon you'll come to the conclusion that they are completely crazy. A kind of a "Natural Born Killers" duo. Especially Hannah is an explosive barrel full of insanity. One wrong word or too much ogling at her richly filled T-shirt is enough to make her explode. The flirtatious behavior of the driver in the car that just stopped, immediately gives rise to a heavy hammer being planted in his forehead (after which the victim is expertly cut into pieces along the way). And thus the tone has been set.

After this, the other protagonists are introduced. First West gives two youngsters hitchhiking along the way a ride. Betty (Rebekah Kennedy) and Jake (Will Tranfo) seem to be an innocent-looking couple. But at the same time you know something isn't right. Betty is the somewhat timid shy type, while Jake is the slightly smoother talker. If it was up to Hannah, who thoroughly starts hating the two teenagers from the first moment, they would end up in pieces in the trunk of the car. After this, Michael (Burt Culver) is introduced. A gay police officer with a serious drinking problem and suicidal tendencies. Unfortunately you won't find out why Michael is suicidal. Let alone you will find out why Hannah and West have become such brutal serial killers. Not that it matters, but it would be an interesting addition.

The second act takes place in Rachael's (Tonya Kay) bed and breakfast. Rachael is a not so bad-looking hostess who quickly makes it perfectly clear, to Hannah in an explicit verbal way, that she isn't someone to mess around with. Nevertheless an odd way to show hospitality. That same evening Michael warns them that some teenagers have disappeared. That can't prevent them to organize a trek through the forest the next day. Oddity number two. Next we get a sort of "Friday the 13th" where you'll be wondering who'll be the next victim and who's the perpetrator. After seeing the part where the local bartender undergoes a spine transplant, you know what to expect. This fragment also shows the used absurd humor in this film. When the bartender ventured into a romp with his horny girlfriend (enough reason to leave the bar unattended. Oddity number three), you weren't expecting that his girlfriend would pull out a purple strap-on dildo. And even less, that this object would be a convenient means of defense.

The denouement in the third act is absolutely bizarre and disturbing. A complete deranged development and disclosure. Something I totally didn't expect. Before I knew it, some deformed nipples were hurled back and forth in front of me and a totally derailed conspiracy was unfolded. But I must admit that it was a highly entertaining movie. Not only because of the bloody and sometimes intense scenes (that spine), but also because of the acting. It was surprisingly well done. Especially between Hannah and West the chemistry was obviously present. And the humor used was rather subtle. The interplay between Ellis Greer and Dan Creed was simply magnificent. Perhaps the end was a bit "over the top". But it surpassed all the typical slashers which are presented nowadays. A must for the fans!

Great idea poorly executed
iceman8886918 March 2017
It started out alright with the character building. Some of the characters were even interesting. I liked the two serial killers the most... Well the male one. The female was irritating and irrational most of the time. The suicidal police officer was also irritating and really not needed. His whole story line was a waste of time or even felt like filler. As the movie goes on, it's almost like the writer did not know how to tell a story or how conversations even really work. A lot of conversations were just strange.

I really do think the movie was going the right direction... Till the killing in the town started. That's when the movie basically falls off the cliff into being just straight out poorly done and bad. The writer seemed to have no clue what makes a good movie. They had a good idea and had no idea how to execute it or where to go with it.

Well that was bad
RandomTard16 May 2021
This is a bad slasher film that's a bit weird and stupid. It's not the worst movie ever, it's not even the worst movie I've watched today - but it is a bad movie still.

If you got nothing better to do it's a way to waste some time, but keep in mind that the best thing in this movie is the music bit they stole from Halloween - that should tell you what to expect.

Do you know what irony is?
nogodnomasters20 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The film starts out with three subplots. We have a newlywed couple who are musicians and killers. There is a second couple with different issues running away from home. And we meet a gay suicidal ex-sheriff. They all gather at a bed and breakfast where we have a non-introduced slasher wearing a mask aka DVD cover.

The characters seemed quirky enough. Dan Creed and Ellis Greer had characters that carried the film. The slasher aspect was more like a WTF...seriously? Although it sort of tied into the "theme" and title. Burt Culver had a ridiculously weak character.

Good sex scene. Should have left it gone on a few more seconds.

Guide: F-word, sex, nudity (Emily Lopato, Tonya Kay with ugly pasties...I think.)

A Worthy Movie To The After Dark Horrorfest Films.
bear_adam16 October 2015
I will make this short and sweet. I usually would go off in a long diatribe about how much I love or hate a movie but here is my review. The story is about 5 strangers coming together in a remote B&B in the mountains and there is a killer aloof. I enjoyed the story. I will now move onto the acting which the movie was cast Superbly for a movie of this status meaning not to well known. The cast did a great job of portraying the dire situation that surrounded them. The soundtrack is what made the movie though to be quite honest it reminded me of The Guest and also You're Next meaning it was very retro. I will move along to the kills and while there weren't many they were done with a nice touch of finesse. I will say though that the one gripe I had as a horror fanatic is that the movie was a tad on the short side being only one hour and twenty minutes long so when the killing finally starts it happens way to quickly but outside of that I loved this movie and I would definitely recommend watching it. I have seen a lot of the After Dark Horrorfest Films since they started up in 2006 and this is most assuredly one of the better films in the collection.

Worth The Watch
alexander-j-timm13 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
To start off, this has been my first encounter with the writer and director of this film; along with the entire cast from what I can see. After watching Bastard as part of the 8 Films To Die For series with Big Bad Film production; I have come to the conclusion that I definitely want to see more by these two!

When the film began I was a little thrown off with the intro, which you can see for yourselves in the film. It was just a different style I haven't been used to seeing and I thought i've seen a lot of styles for movie intros in my addiction to film. As I kept watching I liked how it began. It introduced a few characters, setting up the vibe for the rest of the film. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed in the first introductions.

As the film progressed the other characters came into play; some of them had a little back story to them some were mysterious, but all were interesting. Each character had something a little different about them that made each of them stand out on their own. Some were horrifying, some were innocent, some left you to wonder. All made you try to figure out what each of them were capable of.

Once all of the characters were brought to life the story continued on a path that left you guessing. This film had more twists than I was expecting. It made me want to follow certain characters, leading you one direction and distracting you from others. But at the same time not distracting you. To some that may not make sense but to make good twists you really need to throw some curve balls to deliver; and this film as done that rather well.

I enjoyed the fact that from what I saw, the use of practical effects was greatly emphasized. Time and effort was placed in these gags, and some surprise props will leave you laughing out loud and wondering what in the world.

The acting was pretty good, each actor seemed to really put some heart and sole into their characters; some better than others, however, none left you saying that person is a bad actor. From the main characters to the small roles, everyone put a good effort into their parts. Most, if not all, of these actors I don't believe I've seen before. But I for sure would love to see some of them again in future films I watch.

The film as a whole was easy to follow in my opinion. Sure, it has twists and turns but nothing seemed out of place. I really enjoyed the lighting and tone changes. From the music that seemed to go very well together to the cinematography. Everything seemed to flow together pretty smoothly.

Overall: This film is worth seeing, it was done well. It had all the elements you'd want in a horror movie, and no sense of being too cheesy was witnessed in this film. Some cheesiness was included but necessary. It did what is was designed to do; entertain, horrify, wonder, confusion, enjoy, thrill, re-think and be thirsty for more. A few minor tweaks and this film would be perfect! Definitely deserves the 9/10 though for sure.

Check it out!! You won't be disappointed. Great job to all involved!

What a great horror film from After Dark
james_depaolo18 December 2015
2015 was not the best year for horror films. Hollywood gave us so much crap, and they added to the brain numbing with remakes, sequels, prequels and family friendly trash. Leave it to After Dark and the small little films that always seem to come out of left field and deliver something that gets us excited and talking. Bastard is a film that will win over most horror fans almost instantly. Rebekah Kennedy gives us the May for the 2015 age. She really showcases some serious talent. This film is bloody, fun and unpredictable. Films are meant to be fun and manipulate fear in you, this film is something really special that works on every level. This is what horror has been needing for so long. What a great film. Seek it out and enjoy it.
