Old mysteries, already solved.
toecutter8725 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Note: I'm not a skeptic, I believe in the very likely possibility of intelligent life outside Earth.

If you have even a passing interest in the subject of unexplained phenomenon, you'll already of heard of the majority of "mysteries" presented in this show - you won't learn anything new.

Every episode apparently follows this formula :

1. Present mystery.

2. Offer crazy explanations (preferably Aliens).

3. Reveal that it was just a geological/weather/astrophysics issue.

4. Next mystery.

NASA's Unexplained Files would be best suited for viewers with minimal knowledge of scientific endeavor of the past 100 years.

More like NASA's EXPLAINED files amirite?
justmc1018 October 2020
Most of the episodes are about cases that have been convincingly explained but the TV show pretends that they haven't for like 3/4ths of the presentation only to say "but this one has been very convincingly explained and it's not aliens lol" towards the end: it's so incredibly annoying! This has turned me away from the show more than anything else. The real "unexplained" files out of the first two seasons could've been done in like 3 episodes. I'm including there the ones they pretend that have been explained by NASA's silly handwaving away of the facts. There are some interesting cases here that I didn't know about and that's why I'm giving it six stars. However, I rather remain ignorant of the remaining "unexplained files" (like 4 more seasons) instead of subjecting myself to the annoyance that is this show for most of each episodes runtime.

I kinda like it
jp-8335728 August 2019
Coming from a chemistry graduate student, I sorta like this series. I've seen UFO "documentaries" and pseudoscientific series that I am very very quick to dismiss. This isn't necessarily one of them. YES they bring up far fetched ideas but what sets them apart from other "alien" series (Ancient Aliens, Pyramid Code...) - which are the ones that really deserve 1 star, is that NASA's Unexplained Files provides both evidence that the footage may be and also MAY NOT BE real. Most of the time, they present the footage, and then interview scientists that say it's BS! They entertain the likely possibility that it isn't aliens. Because let's be honest, science has no official evidence of extraterrestrial life. They don't say anything FOR CERTAIN (because if they did it wouldn't be science)!!!! They just present the data and kind of allow you to conclude. So everyone who's saying this series is pseudoscience....I mean, yeah kinda but it still presents the information in a rather scientific manner. To me, it's so important to present information from both sides and this series does a pretty good job with that. Overall, I like it, and I just wanted to offer a sort of rebuttal for everyone giving this series 1 star. I don't think it deserves that.

Science but not as we know it
LBucci-199-6210941 July 2015
This show examines some of the more unusual, mysterious and scary things that have happened to NASA astronauts, People videoing unusual events, strange happenings, it has it all.

The most amazing aspect of the show is that they are objective with most segments. A great bit of viewing and very well done. Nick Pope and Bill Bird all add to the show and the they also have covered some unique subjects not before seen by me and I will search high and low for the latest and do not miss much.

This is light, informative and enlightening for the UFO enthusiast, Paranormal seekers and skeptic's alike. It offer all points of view and is well researched so to not leave an impression or true or false and leaves that choice up to you. True or false isn't always easy to spot with some of the story lines. You need to watch these shows, they are excellent.

Is this a joke?
4ri4n424 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I only watched one episode last night, the one about Stalin mutating DNA of children and sending them in a saucer to US to make it crash and look like UFO. I don't even want to write more... just think of how stupid this sounds?

They cast VERY unreliable so called "scientists" -aka attention/fame seekers with no credentials. One of those is Amy Shira Teitel.

She plagiarized several articles before she got on TV, and sold those articles for money. A site by the name of The Space Review exposed her:

"In addition to the two articles with extensive copying, we also discovered two more examples of Ms. Teitel using source material and text from other authors. Both of those articles also appear on Ars Technica. Although we have not documented them as extensively as the other two cases, they clearly demonstrate a pattern whereby Ms. Teitel uses the work of numerous other space historians without permission or attribution and sells these articles to commercial websites."

You guys can google this yourself, to see the full article.

To which she replied:

"On October 31, we contacted Ms. Teitel asking for a comment. On November 1, she replied:

"Dear Mr. Kennedy,

I've spoken with my editors at Ars Technica; I understand they have pulled the article in question while they consider the matter.

I would like if we could settle this, but you haven't clarified what it is that you want.""

She didn't apologize for her several plagiarisms, she just wanted to "settle" this aka bribe The Space Review. These are just some KNOWN plagiarisms from her, and I bet there are a lot more that we haven't discovered. I cannot respect a network that hosts plagiarists and crooks. Shame on Sci and this stupid show.

I like it
fh711 June 2015
I have seen a lot of these shows and documentary's. I have to say I like where this one takes me. I like the people in it, and the evidence they bring to the table. Worth watching at least compared to other shows out right now if you like watching these shows and or are interested in this topic at all then I would say check it out. The strange thing is that it first piloted in 2012- then it was released 2 years later and then took some long breaks and is back now in 2015.I have not seen all the new episodes but I think that its cool that there is a show that covers anything on NASA 2 people I always love to see on shows like this are Richard Dolan and Nick Pope they always have interesting points and good evidence to back up what they say.

What if this, what if that.... SciFi nonsense....
Fizgig77711 May 2019
What a waste of time! It wants to be real science, it tries to be science fiction with some real science mixed in, but it fails completely on all counts. As the seasons progressed, the stories got more and more absurd.

Don't waste your time. If you want to watch a show covering real science rather than pseudo-science garbage, look elsewhere.

One of the most silliest things I've ever watched
evoapollo1 July 2022
I came across this show on the science channel they started showing it before how the universe works and so I thought ok, it's a show about nasa or so I thought..this show is as silly as the history channel at 3 am. It's not legitimate stuff it's just speculation instead of actual phenomena spotted. This is a silly show and I wouldn't recommend taking it seriously.

Absurd Sensationalized Pseudo-Science. Garbage. Avoid if you have any self respect
benlupu7 January 2018
This is not a science program. It is a wildly sensationalized pile of hysterical garbage. It is however, instructive in exactly one way: It does demonstrate how many supposedly credible scientists will whore themselves for TV exposure.

In this program, pretty much everything in the universe is about to destroy the earth any second or is evidence of alien invasion. It twists actual science into tabloid TV in the worst possible way. Shame on the producers.

If you like science and have any self respect, avoid this stinking pile of poop.

Intriguing, and perhaps the series is almost as unexplained as those files?
jrarichards21 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Perhaps surprisingly described by IMdb as a "British" series, "NUF" has a touch of British class about it (between the lines), mostly looking more like the BBC's veteran documentary series "Horizon" than like, say, "Ancient Aliens". Yet the divide is not actually as clear-cut as you might think, for this decidedly eggheaded series (of which each episode features a series of stories - those "files" - commented on by talking-head experts that are primarily high-flier scientists (including but not solely from NASA), but also include, for example, UFO writer Dr Bill Birnes and ex-Ministry of Defence guy Nick Pope - who are indeed both veterans of "Ancient Aliens".

So the episodes here are an eclectic mix of conventional science and a bit of more way-out stuff, and not all of those "Files" really seem to come from NASA; and some of the mysteries are in fact explained (after tantalising us for a minute or two a la "What on Earth?" (whose episodes also feature some of the same talking heads, not least the mostly-debunking Marc D'Antonio. who also works for the Mutual UFO Network - if mostly having his feet very firmly on the ground, as it were)).

If you had the energy you could write a thesis on the meaning of all of this. I don't, but I am definitely still intrigued. We know that NASA regularly treads a fine line between "playing up" its missions and "talking them down" again - a case in point might be their mixed presentation of the "yes there is life on Mars" or "no there isn't"!!!

"We wonder, but can't be completely sure unless we try again" is the classic line all in science use to secure further funding, and that's a fact... It's also genuinely in the nature of the process of scientfic hypothesis-testing...

Presumably, they feel that there is no such thing as bad publicity and it's OK to have an air of mystery, yet many of those who appear in the show (including some of the bona fide scientists) treat it as something normal to suggest that NASA does indeed cover certain things up - and not purely the stuff it does in cooperation with the military...

By and large, if you watch this show solidly you will pick up a lot of stuff about the cosmos widely and the solar system, so definitely you'll build up your scientific knowledge in a kind of eclectic way. I personally knew plenty before, but I know more thanks to the series...

In the process, you'll be left wondering again and again about conspiracies, even as many (though by no means all) of these ARE defused or more or less explained away during the show.

But after 10 or more episodes you'll probably be wondering how best for your brain to try and process and synthesise all of the separate items (there are maybe 7 or so per episode and it can begin to get confusing).

Most likely the best you'll manage is some kind of growing gut feeling that much/most of what has happened in space exploration is contrary to expectations (and what - for good or ill - does that tell us about science, BTW?); that there is indeed that weird mix of the boring and the scary out there (just like war in fact); and that quite a bit is indeed "unexplained".

If that makes you want to study science or learn more, that's just great. If it also makes you wonder if a great many things are being hidden from us (despite NASA formally being a non-military/non-secret body), well it strikes me that's actually a healthy and realistic point of view - even if we really do not know, but should know, why taxpayers' dollars are rewarded by at least some veil of secrecy.

Now just why is that, exactly?

Hence to the truly "unexplained" feature here - just how does NASA really feel about this show, and how strong is its hand on the show's tiller?

To my mind that is key info...

Hokey, sensationalized, over dramatic but does present some interesting incidents
aussie-5440626 August 2016
Thought I'd revisit as there wa a series I hadn't seen yet on tv. Bad decision. This show is the Kardashian of "science". No explanations still. Over the top hype still. A rubbish show not worth looking at under any circumstances. Old osted review follows. While this show seems to present some facts it is so hyped and sensationalized that it often comes across as hokey. While I love science, especially relating to space, and being entertained, I don't like being talked down to and treated like an idiot. Way over dramatic, sensationalized editing and presentation. Not a good advertisement for astronomy. Presenting the facts in an interesting and factual manner doesn't mean the show will be boring an uninteresting. Virtually every segment I have seen features a breathless announcer and/ or commentator saying, in carefully cut and edited dialogue, what seems to be an announcement that someone has died, aliens have been discovered and hidden or there has been a disaster of some kind. NOT ONCE has this related to the actual outcome. And "files"? I think not.

Science channel has a lot of good shows, and this is def one.
rdoubleoc15 February 2019
The Science Channel has a lot of good shows following similar formats lately (at least in my mind), and all are pretty good, but this one is one of the better ones.

I thought I liked What on Earth better, but this is definitely better after seeing both of them.

Deadly Intelligence and Outlaw Tech (both Science Channel) are my favorites, but I'd say this takes third place.

This is probably my favorite show on the Science Channel.

Mike Baker and Patricia Driscoll are probably my two favorite cast members (they're also in What on Earth?), but they have a lot of good people.

Aborigines have taken up the considerations of the causes by religious thoughts in different ways as consolations as there was no answer or solution to the questions. As a result of the progress of civilization in the present situation, it became possible to find out the correct solutions to questions about nature, universe and questions about the creation in the majority of the cases according to the rules or provisions of science. False explanations
africe18 July 2019
Some of these so called explanations are obviously directed by nasa. Especially season 1 episode 6. How they can say a picture that shows a cylindrical object above the moon is a hammer thrown by an astronaut is absurd. The "conversation" they show between the astronauts is obviously staged. You can tell by the clarity of the camera work. On the moon's surface the video is a bit fuzzy but the conversation about throwing the hammer is clear. Come on nasa...how stupid do you think people are? These nasa explanations have turned me away from the show.

Spectacular, mind boggling, intriguing, interesting, explaining, truth, revealing...

None of the above!!!

I believe that there is more than just humans.

But this show grabs story's right out of its black hole.

Annoying nick pope
Chiller1173 October 2019
I would give this program a couple of more stars if it was not for one big-nosed, wittering thing... nick pope. The former tea-boy at the MOD, who managed to somehow work himself up to being in charge of cleaning out the bathrooms, makes me so angry when his blithering, slurring face suddenly pops up without warning. If there was a warning before his face popped up, it would be fine.

Another Project Bluebook.
bmau-299284 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
First in the 2015 series: Tungusta Russia - Ice meteor exploding over ground. Plausible. Monolith on one of Mars moon... Just a bolder standing on end. Plausible. Crashed UFO in the US.. part of a soviet Satellite doing a re-entry. Documents went missing. Eye witnesses stated it was a controlled entry and the object made a fish hook fly over which clearly demonstrates it was under control. Anything not would enter in a straight line. Black ops military took over site. Took large object away. Space Shuttle challenger: Picture of lightening strike at time it started to break apart: In picture you see a solid line from the challenger going past. Then you see another intersecting line with a starting point above. Their excuse.. Camera moved from delayed shutter. Problem with this excuse: Millions of people use the same technique to take pictures of stars etc. No shutter movement. and Secondly, if there was shutter movement, why are there two lines not just one. The main line showing the shuttle should also have taken a wobble. It is not scientifically possible to have two lines unless it was a double exposure which also cant happen unless the challenger went past twice...

This series is worse than Project Blue Book. The entire premise of the show is to make you think that we have the answers for everything and nothing strange is going on beyond what the show suggests. Anyone with common sense can see this show is a dud !

Nothing in this show is unexplained!
themaytz26 August 2020
Every story is explained an very undramatic, since logic explains everything. It is BS! Only real unexplained mystery here is why the show has the "unexplained" in its title. Now that's a true mystery.

I'm impressed!
gkdasso4 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I thoroughly impressed with the number of viewers who feel disappointed by this shows content. The title instantly implies "Ancient Aliens pt 2". I like watching some of the cast try their hardest not to laugh. It's just hokey late night TV and better than the alternate infomercials pawning the latest cheap Viagra knock-off or Emeril's latest ungodly kitchen creation. I simply find the show hilarious in that *someone* has to think of the content and *someone* is out there eating it up. And the craziest thing is that it sells commercials, too. Funny stuff! I've got 30 characters left to type, Bye kids!

There is a Metaphor in there.
GeorgeTinNYC19 November 2023
I'm going to summarize the entirety of this show in under 3 sentences.

Hi here is something that seems odd, right? We will speculate wildly, and I do mean wildly to draw in your genuine inquisitive nature. Guess what though, after speculating wildly for 2 minutes we will rationally explain what we just speculated wildly about in under 20 seconds.

Crazy right? Like sex with someone who's never done it right before. It will be a lot of random poking and prodding, filled with hope and then go out abruptly.

We could have made a series about soundly educating you on scientific theories, about the oddities of space and new theories of astrophysicists based in facts and rational thought processes but instead we made a slap stick show to tease you and fill time between ads for Doritos and compression shocks. I mean there was a whole ten minutes dedicated to floating space junk! SMH. Just Disappointing.
