- Annie heads to Germany in search of a rogue chemist after Auggie uncovers a startling link between the recent attacks on American soil.
- Ryan is rehabilitated and must rebuild his company, which lost precious contracts and DC credit. Yet he insists to spend time with Annie and look out for Auggie, for whom he gets a bodyguard, Pete, after a physical outburst against the medical examiner who refused to rule alcoholic vet comrade Tony's death a murder rather then OD, got him arrested, and a state of the art computer. It proves vital to guide Annie's mission to link the rare poison, made only in six labs, to Belenko, who passed near one, in Essen (Germany). There she tails chemist Britta Kaplan and spots Russian FSM agent turned killer Olga Akarova, but exhausts Auggie's patience with self-righteous risks and surprise twists. Calder is delighted how much information his lover Sydney got from the Russian DC embassy diplomat and insists to keep using her. A polygraph test makes Joan fear prosecution for her unsavory Balkans past, but Arthur'sources say she's vetted for some promotion. Auggie and Pete are abducted.—KGF Vissers
- Annie plays house with Ryan McQuade as he recuperates, but he's intent on getting back to work. Annie gets a call from Eric Barber at Langley about Auggie. Annie goes to bail him out. He shoved the medical examiner when he disagreed with his findings about his State Department friend Tony dying of alcohol poisoning. Tony was a bourbon man, but the ME said he drank too much vodka. Tony had been sober three years.
Auggie thinks Balenko is behind it, he's going after guys in Auggie's old unit. First Charlie in Chicago, then Mueller, the would-be terrorist based on false intel, then Tony by poisoning after the motorcade bombing was foiled. Auggie is the last one from his unit still alive. Annie suggests they have to prove Tony was killed, then go from there.
Given that Auggie was arrested, Joan says she has no choice but to suspend Auggie for the week.
Annie breaks into Tony's house and carefully lifts the liquor bottles, then takes them Auggie with results of the tests she had run on them. The vodka was laced with a rare synthetic toxin. Annie wants Auggie to go to the CIA for protection, but he refuses after Joan just benched him.
Annie plans to fly to one of the eight labs that makes the toxin, in the same German city that Balenko flew through on his way back from Istanbul. McQuade brings pizza before Annie leaves on her red eye. He offers to come with her, but Annie asks him to do him a favor instead.
Annie meets with Auggie before she goes, introducing him to McQuade. He gives her everything he has on the super secure lab.
Essen, Germany
Annie sees the woman who got away from her and Eyal in Istanbul sitting in the lab's lobby and takes note of the blonde woman in a lab coat that the brunette spy follows.
On the DC streets, Auggie confirms someone is following him by walking late into a crosswalk and listening for the screeching of tires avoiding his pursuer. Back at this apartment, he grabs something from his safe and logs onto a secure webpage.
McQuade finds the brunette spy is Olga Akarova, an FSB operative with the Special Activities Directorate. The blonde she's following is Britta Caplan, a South African chemist, likely the one who made the toxin for Balenko.
At Langley, Joan gives Calder the results from Mashkov's phone that Stephanie was able to sync with. Mashkov is more connected than they thought. Calder wants to get her in deeper, despite Joan's serious misgivings.
Joan is called for an unscheduled polygraph exam.
Annie updates Auggie on the women she's following. He's annoyed she involved McQuade without telling him, and calls her on having one of McQuade's guys follow him. She wants to make sure he's safe.
Joan answers questions about her time in the Balkans, training members of the Kosovo Liberation Army. She can't get any answers about what she's doing there.
In Germany, Annie checks that the FSB agent is following the chemist, then breaks into the chemist's apartment. She finishes snapping photos of some files when she hears the FSB agent Akarova come in. Annie watches as she removes a listening device, but a creak in the floor board makes the FSB agent nervous and Annie has to sneak onto an adjoining balcony to hide.
McQuade drops in on Auggie, introducing him to his shadow, Pete. After Auggie mentioned his lack of access to CIA tech, McQuade is bringing him a military-grade laptop with all the bells and whistles. He wants to make sure Annie has the best available resources backing her up.
Auggie uses the tech to let Annie know that Olga is now doing wet work for the FSB and has four recent kills. Auggie tries to convince Annie to wait for back-up, but she won't listen given that his life is in danger.
After rejecting several possible time-consuming cover stories, Annie tries the direct approach with Britta, and sits down and tells her Balenko has sent an assassin to kill her. Annie shows her surveillance photos of Olga and offers protection if she'll show Annie what she's working on.
Joan checks in with Arthur, worried about the questions about the Balkans. He says he'll look into it.
Calder meets with Stephanie and tells her the Maskov intel was a jackpot. He asks her to try to get Mashkov to fall in love with her, so she'll trust her.
Back in Germany, Olga follows Britta out of the café -- but it's Annie wearing her lab coat. The two women race through the subway and Annie loses her on a train platform.
When Annie checks in with Auggie, he reads her the riot act about taking risks. She defends herself, saying she's not a rookie agent who needs his approval anymore and she thinks that scares him.
Arthur learns from his contact that Joan's polygraph was because she's being considered for a promotion.
Britta Caplan sneaks Annie into her lab, but Britta has a lot of questions about Caitlin Cook. It turns out Balenko used the same ploy with her, telling her she was the love of his life and giving her the same ring. As she pours herself a vodka in her office, Britta tells Annie that Belenko is meeting someone named Shuma in Frankfort tomorrow at a hotel. Britta gives her the toxin she made for Balenko, but then collapses after downing a shot. Annie tries to resuscitate her, but then is caught going through Britta's things when the guards arrive.
McQuade joins Auggie at a bar. Neither has heard from Annie, but Auggie's not surprised. McQuade toasts Tony.
Later that night, after her date with Mashkov, Stephanie tells Calder he's already talking about taking her to Russia. She tells Calder it feels good to do the right thing, but she's also doing it for him. Stephanie kisses him, but they're interrupted when Mashkov calls to make a date for later.
Annie is being held by the lab security when Olga flashes and Interpol badge to take Annie away. Annie fights her off, but Olga pins her down and takes out a knife. Then she cuts Annie free. "We are on the same side, Annie Walker," Olga says.
In DC, Auggie goes home with Pete on his tail but hears the lock turn in his door a short time later. He fights off two attackers, with the advantage of knowing his own apartment, but is finally felled by a stun gun and dragged outside to a waiting van, where he manages to drop his watch on the ground. He's shoved inside the van next to Pete's dead body.
